The interview is a bit incomplete. For the question why the new model is costlier than the old model, the reply was more mileage and addition of more airbags.
Now Fronx delta + optional variant with 6 airbags launched with 15000/- extra. Addition of 15000/- ( out of total 25000/-) price increase is justified in terms of airbags. But the following questions are unanswered.
1. Why Suzuki went for 3 cylinder engine ( Z series) while 4 cylinder K12M/N series was already available. Somewhere I read the reason was that ICE engines are more efficient when the cylinder size is between 350 to 400cc. So to get the GST benefit of less than 1200cc 3 cylinders give maximim efficiency . Probably they developed this engine to differentiate the new model compared to old models. Old K12N engine reached its technilogical limit ( only turbo is further possibile which will reduce mileage and increase cost). Now this Z series engine is barebone and possibly after few years in line they introduce dualjet etc , and increase the price again.
2. By reducing one cylinder the production cost must have comedown. More over in the new engine they have removed Dualjet ( price was increased due to these technologies 2 years back). The new Z series engine is a barebone engine with only VTVT available. That further have reduced production cost. So the increase in price is somewhat not justfied.
3. Increase in mileage is mentioned again and again as the reason for price increase. But to increase mileage no new technologies are added. Only performance is reduced ( due to less fuel intake) and probably increase on cylinder compression ratio. As there is no component involved , no justification for price increase.
4. The main reason for price increse is because Suzuki has become greedy and wanted to use the Swift brand name ( well establised worldwide and from 2005 in India). They increased the price recently inspite of knowing the fact that the new model would be released in May. This is probably to prepare the customers for price increase in new model.
5. Xuv 3XO got 50000 bookings in first one hr which never happended in Swift 's 19 years history. Still Swift constantly sells 15000 units average monthly and whether 3XO can acieve that monthly figure can be judged only after a year when initial enthusiasm settles down.
6. Whatever one may say about Swift design , engine , price etc , it is still a cute car and will be in top 10 ( if not in top 5) sales. people Dont bother about number of cylinders , 0- 100 pickup or even safety rating ( it seems the new model is stronger than the previous ones) , but only about reliability, mileage , ASS etc which the new Swift easily fulfills.
