I can see the advantage of a flush, in that it replaces the fluid in the converter. But also not changing the filter, is like not changing your engine oil filter when doing a oil change. The filter is designed to last the life of the fluid, and then be changed. If you want to be really thorough on it we should probably do a filter and a fluid flush! Ray you did this one right!

I think that this is the best way to service a transmission. I just did this service to my own truck. It is more expensive than just replacing the filter and the fluid in the pan, but if you can afford the additional cost it is worth it.
I guess drilling one would be out of the question, especially on trucks that you know are going to rack up the miles. I mean that is the promise of a good diesel engine. They should able to last for hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance.
I worked for the National Park Service in the equipment shop for 34 years. My division supervisor told me they had a boat load of money to spend and asked what I needed for the shop. I told him I would like a trans fluid ex-changer, a brake fluid flusher and a coolant ex-changer and explained how it would increase the life of our vehicles by changing fluids at prescribed intervals. Six months later I got an oil filter squisher. Go figure.
😅I can see they took your advice. They obviously wanted new trucks more than keeping the old ones running. You know government if the money is not spent it is taken away.
As a ford transmission tech watching you not use fomoco ulv for the 10speed hurt. I’ve had to rebuild more of these then I’d like to say due to not using ford ulv. Still love your content and love you ray!
I have sadly I don’t know why that’s above my pay grade. However majority of my 10r140 rebuilds are on long haul rigs like this and they all have aftermarket fluid that does meet or exceed fomoco ulv. It’s always cause of deteriorating seals. Nothing to do with smoked clutches. But I’ve pulled apart hundreds of same mileage units with ulv and they have smoked clutches and the seals are fine so I’m not sure. Ray I’m sure you have been given a British sense of humour may be that’s why you are not understood sometimes but for me you are diligent in your work and very funny 😂
Before I put my filter back in, I slide a suction hose inside were the filter goes, placed hose inside jug of fresh Amsoil and cranked truck, let run till fresh oil comes out, then install filter and finish job, works great.
Brother you have no idea how much I hate these even on a lift. And if anyone is wondering. That "pink motor" next to the filter. Is actually the pump. It has a gear that spins another gear to pump fluid. That is the "whine noise" people hear sometimes
A drain plug on the pan would only partially drain the ATF. The torque converter, cooler,.etc. would all still be full of the old stuff. If Ray was correct, he got 9 quarts out of the pan (it may hold 10, allowing for spillage) and he thought it was a 28 quart system... so a drain plug would leave almost 2/3 of the old ATF.
@@alanm.4298 I don't think he was intending drain plug to replace a fluid exchange! Just to empty transmission so you can change filter or service internals! For the 1-2$ extra it is incredible that they don't provide a drain plug!
Your rant about the high beam drivers was on target! The other one that really bugs me. Is the people who think the lights are on, but it's only the daytime running lights! Running with no taillights isn't good.
Yep, see that all the time. I suspect it's the "always on" dash lights to be the culprit, that and not reading the fucking manual to even be aware of the issue at hand
If I'm driving on a two lane road, I'll leave my lights on high beam. I'll pay attention if and when the driver dims, I'll dim. If we're getting close, and they haven't dimmed, I'll dim. 70% of the time it works all of the time they'll see the change in my lights and dim. Something has to draw their attention. If they don't dim, I'll leave mine on dim and divert my eyes to the right side of the road strip. I don't turn my brights on because *we don't both need to be blinded!* I have found myself forgetting to dim. No one is perfect. Forgiveness and grace is required in dealing with someone you're passing on the road that you'll only encounter for the brief moment. 🤔
"...could be caked with snow and slush....." I can relate... The USAF sentenced me to 4 rears at GFAFB (Grand Forks, ND) 1976-1980. My AFSC (AF Specialty Code) was 47252 - General Purpose Vehicle Mechanic. If it was painted AF Strata Blue and had wheels, I fixed it. We had some 400+ GPV's running around the base and missile complex. The shop could hold about 30 vehicles inside at one time. There were NO (zero lifts) and only 2 pits. All repair work and most service work was done at floor level or on jack stands. Not only was everything caked in snow and ice when it came in the shop, but cold outside air came rushing in along the floor every time an overhead door went up. Winters (generally) lasted from October to April and were miserable in the shop.
Just remember, Ray, the people who said you're a "crybaby" for complaining about people driving with their high-beams on all the time are the same people who drive around with their high-beams on all the time

Mr. Ray Why not a four poster ramp for the heavier vehicles. With a alignment rack. So no more sending out to other garages. And put the two post lift outside the new up and over door. Thus creating more work for you and maybe increase your work staff. As you already know how to do wheel alignment. From the previous garage you worked at. Great show as always

just did this job on my 04 ram 2500 4x4....on floor jacks and a creeper. good times. one tool that made it much less messier is my mityvac 7300 fluid extractor. got most of the fluid out that it barely drained anything when the bolts came out.
Put a BD transmission pan on that bad boy. They are so affordable compared to their competitors. Holds more fluid, has better transmission cooling ability, has a drain plug, temperature sensor bung, uses OEM pan gasket and filter. None of that plastic pan garbage. Glad you are putting Amsoil in it, by far one of the best, if not the best ATF fluids available.
I’m struggling on getting a bigger pan with better cooling. I think that the truck wants the transmission at around 200-215F I think that the ECM maintains the transmission temperature with the heat exchanger. By adding more cooling you could be running the transmission cooler that it needs to or maybe at the same 200-215F because the heat exchanger will heat the oil. What do you guys think?

You should start using a pump to remove the fluid from the transmission when removing the pan. By using an “ inboard oil change pump” you can remove 90% of the fluid before removing pan. Fluid can be removed through the dipstick tube or hole where dipstick would be.
Idea… if you pick up a medium sized concrete mixing tub (Lowe’s or Home Depot) it would catch all of your drips that the round pan can’t. Just an idea and only about $10.
Hey ray when youre dealing with these transmissions, use a transfer pump in the fill port and you can get like 80% of the fluid out without issue. Makes the pan a lot easier to get off

Ray, as many long wheelbase vehicles as you have had in the shop, maybe it is time to consider a four-post lift, so you can lift a long wheelbase vehicle securely, so you can do these types of services without being on a creeper. At the very least, find out if there is some way to add some additional space for a long-base alignment rack, so you could, in theory, do the current job using that type of rack.
I agree with you about the high beams but you forgot to also mention people with daytime driving lights forget to turn their headlights on at night and don't realize that without turning their lights on they have no taillights.
I am amazed that you are able to show as much as you are able when doing these videos. It is hard enough in a normal situation, but rolling around on a creeper under the truck, trying to work and position the camera for sometimes unappreciative viewers, makes me wonder if you are able to beat the flat rate. Thanks a bunch for letting me look over your shoulder.
Many years ago (1962), I needed the soft plugs replaced in my 1957 Ford in Flagstaff, AZ, in winter. The Ford dealer refused to work on the car until the snow and ice melted. Couldn't blame them.
When I removed the trans pan on the 6R80 in my F150, I stuck the tube of my pneumatic suction brake bleeder into the filled port to remove 90% of the fluid which made pan removal much cleaner and easier
Idea, find a used broken down powered pallet jack and turn it into a car mover. You can find them at about 300 to 2k some place could even give you one to get it out of the wear house. Its problematic in a corner collecting dust. In the way most the time.
You could have used a floor jack to press against the pan until all the fasteners are removed. That would keep your tools clean from the dripping. I never did this, but it just came into mind.
B&M makes a trans pan for a 6R140 pan. Not sure if this is the same for the 10 speed but it has a drain bolt for less mess! I have a 2020 Chev Silverado with the 5.3 and 8L90E trans. Had a muffler shop lower the pipe at a cost of $100, installed a B&M dip stick, and bought a factory drain pan to which I welded a drain bolt assembly. I need to make a You tube for this service/materials.
B&M has been around forever and a day, their products have always been top quality. I installed one of their drain plugs and Transpak kits in my '69 Cougar's FMX trans when I was 17 (another lifetime ago) and was thrilled with the results -- great bang for the buck. 😎
I replaced the ULV motorcraft fluid in my F150 10R80 with Amsoil LV Signature Series fluid and my Trans fluid temp dropped 10 degrees and shifts much better. Especially during the skip shifts. No issues at all in the 21,000 miles since. Plan to change it again in another 9,000 miles.
I had another shop bring me a 2020 transit 350 and a different shop put motor on a d it never ran right afterwards. Found it didn't want to back up. Got it in the shop and found cracked intercooler. Likely the original problem that ruined the engine on first place. Put the new intercooler on and it ran good but still had exhaust leak. Also it would not move in reverse. Found that transmission was 3 quarts low. Middle shop had pushed it with another truck 15 miles to my shop. Makes ya wonder what first shop was thinking putting engine on first place. They couldn't find a boost leak and never checked trans fluid after having trans cooler removed. Not all mechanics are the same. If ya find a good one then don't piss them off.
I have a 2003 7.3 power stroke and I added the screw on filter to the tranny from Diesesite. No more worrying about changing the goofy screen filter inside the tranny. Also run nothing but Amsoil in everything. Except for Evans coolant. Evans has no water $50 a gallon but never needs changing.

I have never flushed out a transmission like that. I have changed filters and whatever fluid dropped out before. I recently had a torque converter swapped out during a motor swap, and the mechanic said that he flushed the transmission like that and changed my filters again during the process. My truck had 246k miles on it when the timing chain tensioner decided to break and destroyed my 5.7 hemi in my 2005 dodge ram 1500. That's what initiated the engine swap. I got a rebuild from Jasper with a 100k mile warranty, and I told the mechanic to go ahead and put in a new torque converter and new front seal on the transmission while he had it apart.

😅I can see they took your advice. They obviously wanted new trucks more than keeping the old ones running. You know government if the money is not spent it is taken away.
It's likely that was all they could afford after spending the majority of the money lining there own pockets.
At least my 2016 steel body f250 still had a dipstick and a drain plug for the transmission.
I also agree with Ray on people running their high beams all the time. They are terrible if you have had eye surgery!
I been watching these videos for years since the beginning. He is very good at his job. Thank you
Thanks Ray,always educating while being comical as hell! Always looking for your next upload. 👍
As a ford transmission tech watching you not use fomoco ulv for the 10speed hurt. I’ve had to rebuild more of these then I’d like to say due to not using ford ulv. Still love your content and love you ray!
If the AMSOIL meets or exceeds the FOMOCO ULV specifications, what is the concern? Have you seen higher failure with non Ford oils being used?
I have sadly I don’t know why that’s above my pay grade. However majority of my 10r140 rebuilds are on long haul rigs like this and they all have aftermarket fluid that does meet or exceed fomoco ulv. It’s always cause of deteriorating seals. Nothing to do with smoked clutches. But I’ve pulled apart hundreds of same mileage units with ulv and they have smoked clutches and the seals are fine so I’m not sure. I’d like to know the science of itv all
@@ajunglewalrus13I use Amsoil everything in my truck except the transmission, I use Motorcraft lv . Don't ask me why but I do changes in shorter intervals than Ford says . I figure with the electronics and all it would be safer to stay OEM with the trans .
@@ajunglewalrus13How many 22 year trans are you seeing getting rebuilt? At times I get a hard clunk while shifting from park, reverse, or drive, @2500 miles. Thanks
Just wondering how you can tell what fluid is in the transmission when you tear it down. It could be Ford fluid or Walmart fluid.
After several years of watching Rays videos, I’ve subconsciously adopted some of his sayings. From ‘click’, to ‘gravity’ to ‘let it ride’, I I’ve now added them to my daily vocabulary. Nice one Ray! Perhaps they should go into the dictionary for future generations to enjoy?
Yep certainly adopted the ‘CLICK’
I like 'everything is a hammer'....so true, so true
The guy that called you a cry baby is probably the one that was driving behind you with the high beams on, He must have recognized his headlights.
Happy Saturday Ray and Cody.
Brother you have no idea how much I hate these even on a lift. And if anyone is wondering. That "pink motor" next to the filter. Is actually the pump. It has a gear that spins another gear to pump fluid. That is the "whine noise" people hear sometimes
4 hours to do the fluid exchange and 4 hours of cleanup.
One simple drain plug on the pan would make this so much easier.
Hey, that's expensive! Who can afford that? It would cost a dollar or perhaps two!
And a fill tube a guy could get to.
With my own stuff, i drain the pan, refill, run for a week or two, then drain and fill again.
Looks like it might be time for a bigger shop with a 4 post lift for the bigger stuff you are doing - great work as usual
Yes I would have thought more work would have done for the slipway for the submarine that is booked in early next month.
I said the same thing, lol.
Remember, this location isn't very old. He's still recouping the cost and effort required for startup. 🤔
Would now be time to move and do it again?
Make that 6 bays, he needs an alignment setup , and a bay for visiting dignitaries.
agree.... he needs an alignment machine
Your rant about the high beam drivers was on target! The other one that really bugs me. Is the people who think the lights are on, but it's only the daytime running lights! Running with no taillights isn't good.
You have to be smarter than your equipment, but some, like the high beam drivers, either don't care or are clueless. It’s a close call.
Yep, see that all the time. I suspect it's the "always on" dash lights to be the culprit, that and not reading the fucking manual to even be aware of the issue at hand
Wait until the high beamers find out that driving with them on constantly is illegal.
And the other most egregious one is the left lane people who aren't passing anyone and won't move over to the right lane
I don't turn my brights on because *we don't both need to be blinded!*
I have found myself forgetting to dim. No one is perfect. Forgiveness and grace is required in dealing with someone you're passing on the road that you'll only encounter for the brief moment. 🤔
"...could be caked with snow and slush....."
I can relate...
Thanks for your service. Retired Army. Lived in South Dakota for 5 yrs before Army. Remember how long winters lasted!
It been a long time ive not laughed like this in a very long time thank you ray
Wife unit rocks…..You are a lucky man!!
Just remember, Ray, the people who said you're a "crybaby" for complaining about people driving with their high-beams on all the time are the same people who drive around with their high-beams on all the time
I like all the videos you put up. I can tell you take pride in the job you do.
You're so lucky and fortunate having Lauren in your life, she's a rare find. Being a recent widower, you don't want being single these days and in the dating scene. There's debauchery and treachery at every turn!
Careful with the brake cleaner when the engine is running we had one catch fire through a slightly leaking exhaust ,it went out quickly and no damage but it was a bit of a panic for a short time .
Mr. Ray
Why not a four poster ramp for the heavier vehicles.
With a alignment rack. So no more sending out to other garages. And put the two post lift outside the new up and over door. Thus creating more work for you and maybe increase your work staff. As you already know how to do wheel alignment. From the previous garage you worked at.
Great show as always
Nothing but $$$$$

To flush engine or transmission when replacing oil, is only a good thing. Did it for many years, clean engine and no problems.
I preached to people in my shop Change trans fluid and filter , they did not want to spend $ , only a few came back for it , I sold them new tractors , and ZTR,s ...they would not listen ,one bless the bearing out the side of the pump ! *THUMBS UP* 👍 (it's an ALL PLAY!) to show Ray our appreciation of taking the time and effort to shoot these videos!! Being a fairly new RUclips creator, I understand!
Disregard the trolls comments. I bet not one of them has ever turned a wrench, they only can operate the recliner handle and a keyboard. Love your videos regardless of the length.
just did this job on my 04 ram 2500 4x4....on floor jacks and a creeper. good times. one tool that made it much less messier is my mityvac 7300 fluid extractor. got most of the fluid out that it barely drained anything when the bolts came out.
Would it kill them to put in a drain plug
Useing a 8 gallon mighty vac is priceless when doing this job , but then again Ray is trying to lube the squeaky wheels on his creeper .
This was not as messy as it could have been I used to do this in my back yard it was a mess every time but then it got to where I got better at it and it wasn't so messy anymore.
Good video loved every minute of this one thanks.
I dunno if you follow Casey LaDelle, but he directly engages the haters and encourages them. According to him, their complaints and comments attract replies and more comments, which increases engagement in the algorithm, and makes more money for his channel. So let the haters hate!

About yesterdays video, I hate swamped gloves too. I use cloth glove liners now. I change them often like putting on dry socks. Saved my hands. They wash pretty well. I think everyone should be using them if they use gloves.
the local Ford Dealer pushes cars around with an electric forklift - no forks - there are 2 car tires with inflated inner tubes mounted to the front, side-by-side, and further cushioned with 2 couch cushions tied on. works great!
Yep the melty Frozen road encrusted snow and Ice... A nice chunk of that fell straight down the back of my Monkey suit at the tender age of 16 in Vocational Auto while under some 70's vehicle on a rack in Mid-January. Much to my irritation and my classmates delight I danced around until I stripped it off and got the offending cold wet mixture out of it. I chose right then and there to continue turning wrenches but not in that environment. After seeing the Bs you have been through in dealerships and other repair shops it only makes me feel correct in my decision. Your hard work, perseverance and financial management allowed you to rise above all of that and begin building what I see as a viable growing business which will continue to grow and prosper. Additionally give the opportunity to other worthy mechanics to continue to grow in the right atmosphere. To the day @ almost 61 I will get on my back under my vehicles and do repairs, oil changes Etc. It's in our blood. Much respect to you and all of the others who go out there day after day, ferret out the issues mechanical and electrical and correct them and get vehicles and machinery up and running again. We are what keeps this country going👊

I feel for ya Ray. I don't have a lift so when I'm in my driveway working under my vehicles on a cardboard mat, I also utter many choice words (some ineligible) that I won't repeat here and certainly not with kids around.
Ray, I like the longer vids, my mechanicing days self taught were in the late 70’s 80’, so now with all the new tech it is interesting, keep them coming.

When you have that many people watching your great content, some aholes will always feel the need to be themselves. Just keep right on doing what you're doing. Love your channel.
It is indeed a numbers game
Makes the pan a lot easier to get off
you have the Chinesium car weld some Push bars on that and use it for Moving cars
Mmmm, ASMR, the trans fluid draining sounds like rain fall.
As a Guy from Ohio, I'm always envious of the lack of rust y'all have down there
He cheats. 😂
Im outa Cali and the Florida rust is too much for me lol. Everything else here sucks tho
depends on where in Florida you are, some areas can rust a car frame threw in a couple of years
As a Canadian in rural Ontario I can agree as I watch the rust form on my 4 year old car...
@@farmerjer9339also in rural Ontario, I've done the rust prevention thing both here and in Atlantic Canada. It did seem to help the longevity of 2 vehicles... over the years.
Ray, it is an actual filter with some type of pleated filtration media, as shown at 17:50. You should take a look at the old filter again.
Never understood the thought process of not having a trans fluid dip stick.
Time for a grease job on the creeper!
Love your videos.
No, he does not want to apply the spilled oil for that! Or did you think something else?
I always, always chuckle when I hear the 'Look who that guy is.' intro.
Get you a 4 wheeler! That’s what we used to push dead cars in the bay! Just strapped a old tire to the front of it
I need to agree with you about the high beam indicator, having driven near 3 million miles that I can remember.
I can relate to the squirting all over the place, only I do it with tinting fluid for paint, which doesn't come off easily.
I put a drain plug in mine, it helps a lot with the mess problem.
Paint marker the spots for the studded bolts, makes it easier to remember when reinstalling, and for the next guy (that may also be you).
Impeccable work as always!
I have always wondered why Transmission pans don't have drain plugs like your oil pans
They used In the good old days. Now you are lucky to have an ATF dip stick.
After rolling around on a creeper under my car this morning I can sympathize with Ray.
Keep up the great work Ray! Once again learning! Thanx.

Anyhoo, got to do the trans, (automatic gearbox UK), will probably be using the magnetic drain plug removal tool, that I bought as I saw you using one, you remember, you just used it to undo the last few threads?
A few of the other jobs I have done in the last seven months of ownership;
Wished I had a garage, A LOT as I have to work in the street!
Sorted out 'machine gunning', (where the door locks would rapidly lock and unlock when you locked the car with the fob)which happened just after I bought the car. The stealership said it needed two actuator modules which they fitted, I found out it was the springs in the actuators which had snapped, so when I got it back after five weeks, I asked for the old units and fixed them!
Oil change, pumped out through dipstick tube.
Cavity waxed and undersealed with lanolin-based wax
Power steering pump, twice, as the first one I got failed after 10 miles, I also changed the variable speed unit that changes the stiffness at low speeds.
Serpentine belt, three times before I noticed the tensioner was out of alignment.
Changed as many bulbs as possible to LED (got twin HID headlamps as standard, so no need there)
Changed tyres, tires, as originals were suffering dry rot.
Spark plugs fitted, Bosch double platinum x 6
Inner and outer tie rods, droplinks, shocks and wheel bearings. Rotors, or discs as we call 'em. Top strut bearings. Backplates for front rotors. Bled the brakes.
Recolo(u)red the seats, to Ivory, from beige.
Put in Android HU, with wireless CarPlay as standard Merc unit was ancient!
Fitted cheap Chinesium HUD, the missus keeps reminding me when I'm speeding, so unfitted!
Had wheels sprayed, got it done cheap, and it's chipping, The Guy is going to fix it but may end up doing it myself, I have a compressor.
Changed the gas struts for the boot/bonnet.
To-do list:
Diff oil, trans fluid (flush) with newer larger capacity sump, as above.
Oh yeah, drive the bloody thing!
Keep on keeping on Ray😃
Ray, I stopped pushing them around years ago and it is not expensive... I just put an old boat trailer on lawnmower wheels and use a trailer dolly to move it around
my trailer dolly is a 6hp Briggs and a mower rear-end mounted on the remains of an old cherry picker so it has a ball on the short end of an 'L' the motor/ axle in the point and a pair of handlebars at the 'top' of the 'L' with tthe throttle and clutch on them...
slide the trailer un from the back of the vehicle and put blocks on it to make it lift the vehicle when you pull down on the Handlebars...
apparently people like it because I have been paid to make 6 more since I made mine about a decade ago.
Never quite understood why one wouldn’t evacuate the fluid through the dipstick hole or level check hole before dropping the pan 😅
That filter is much easier to change than its smaller counter parts.
Well I done it again. Welcome to the weekend ray Lauren and family...great week of content love every video 40 minutes average is great..keep up the great work my good man ...Heller from Morgan county Alabama
Hey Ray, some cars, if you hold the start button for like 30 seconds, it will start without pushing the brake
