Resent research by the Metsovio University of Athens shows the cargo ship Saint Bedan took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk saving thousands of lives. These unknown facts gives new aspect to the shipwreck of Zakynthos.
5:19 I actually went to the wreck back in 2019 For those who plan to visit her, wear chainmail shoes. The beach she’s on is made of rocks, so you won’t feel soft sand below your feet.
Ive been going every year up until the cliff fall. The first time i visited i got off the boat and hit those stones so bad. They are sharp like needles. Never went without beach shoes after that! They are horrendous.
absolutely magnificent my friend! I had no idea in just the last 4 years she had essentially entirely collapsed like that...I had figured she was still mostly intact : (
Thank you! Yeah it's amazing how in just the last couple of years, the wreck has changed so much. Definitely a lot different from when I first explored the wreck in 03, when she was still relatively intact (I remember peering into the engine room which still had a lot of its equipment and catwalks still in place and a pretty strong smell of grease and diesel fumes!).
Thank you! I think its mostly a combination of exposure to the elements (it was quite a fragile structure, the interior being wood with a thin metal outer skin) and people climbing on it over the years which probably resulted in it eventually collapsing.
I had no idea the ship had rotted away that much in just 2 years, i did know that the forward superstructure had since mostly collapsed but I didn’t think the entire hull (cargo section) had rotten and collapsed
It is amazing how much the wreck has changed in the last few years. I think its a lot to do with how much the beach has 'shrunk' due to erosion. When I first visited the wreck in 2003, there was quite a big distance between the wreck and the sea. Over the years the beach has shrunk so much that the wreck is now basically much more exposed to breaking waves (it can get really rough in that cove when the wind shifts). Apparently the last couple of winters have been pretty violent in the Ionians, and now that the wreck bears the full brunt of the rough seas, breaking waves probably smashed right through what was left of the hull. At least that's my theory.
A sidenote to the wreck. There's a kind of a 'feud' between Kefalonia and Zante with the former gestingly showing contempt to the latter on many levels. Among the things that is sometimes said is that only thing worth to go and see in Zante is the wreck. But the wreck itself is Kefalonian 😂
It is impressive that so many people are interested in an insignificant ship that smuggled cigarettes and was wrecked in Zakynthos. This shit has no historical, aesthetic or other value and pollutes the environment. Many should reconsider what is of value and what is not in this life. Zakynthos, like other Ionian islands, has many historically and environmentally interesting places for one to visit. I suggest you turn your interest there.
It IS extremely historically significant, because it appears (as another commenter pointed out) that the vessel participated in the evacuating of Dunkirk in World War II likely saving the lives of hundreds of men.
Grow up @Tender121 The world doesn't revolve around you .. People are allowed to have an interest in Maritime stuff .. You didn't have to watch did you ?/ .. go hug a tree .. byeeee
It’s kinda beautiful in a depressing way. She was built of iron harvested from the Earth, and overtime she returned to the Earth.
I agree. A beautiful example of the cycle of life.
Then where’s that chunk missing

That is very true, its quite deceiving from a distance it looks like soft white sand but it's a lot more rocky and pebbly.

CHAINMAIL SHOES!?
3:34 but he doesn’t have chainmail shoes
@@HFBmarinewas your first visit cold or hot
Nice job!
Magnificent work!
Amazing to watch! Nature is so insanely and rapidly destructive. It's great to see that illustrated!
when oxygen touches metal it will rust
@sunnnyfactory incorrect, metal will oxidize. Rust is specific to iron.

What an amazing video! And at 6:40, i can't wait to see your recreation of the Amstar decay.
I wouldnt bother now, not much of it left and its a very dangerous, rusty pile, of vandelised and graffittied debri.
You made interesting project, i have never seen anything like this before, a recreation of time lapse about some degradation in 3d, it was fascinating
Well done mate!! Well done!

Most likely, gravity played a major part
What nostalgia for better times
Amazing timeline, I wonder if your gonna do the same for SS American Star?

@@HFBmarine I wonder what’s causing the beach to erode, if the beach continues to shorten I don’t think the wreck will be around for much longer :(
I went there a few years ago
Saw the wreck in 2012, heard a story that all the contraband cargo had been disappeared by the locals by the time the customs officials arrived.
i need more of these
#PANAGIOTIS
You shouldn’t put panagiotis to a museum bc this is panagiotis’s final resting place
It didn’t deserve to be wrecked though, because of greed.
Was it real?

I did not know about the feud, thanks for the extra info! 😅
i wonder if any of the ships previous crew members or any of the smugglers went to see the ship over the years
I don’t know what happened to the port side
2001 is the best
I seen this wreck this year during the summer we had to stay on the boat because it was to dangerous cause rocks could’ve fallen on us

Make Titanic please.

I first went in 1994 didn't think much of it, sea was rough and cold and beach was painful to walk on.
