  • In this video Jeff runs through basic disassembly of a Lineartronic CVT to the primary and secondary variator pulleys. Although the Lineartronic units have proven more reliable than many of the Jatco CVT's, we work on and overhaul quite a few of them.
    Thanks,

Boy, if I had not come across this video, I would have remained sold on what the Subaru dealership told us, that the CVT could not be repaired and replaced as a whole (for a LOT of money, of course, like $9 grand). Thank you so much! And since we live in St. Paul, we can definitely consider doing business with you. We were in despair earlier about the replacement cost of the CVT, and now, thanks to this video, we are becoming hopeful. Again, thanks Kennedy Transmission!

right!? in my defense (Subaru dealer technician) Subaru of America only authorizes transmission unit replacement, unless its a minor repair such as a valve body, torque converter, harness/inhibitor switch, or other external sensor/component/seal. I guess they dont trust us to overhaul the unit!

All master techs had to take training on the CVT, we all had to disassemble and rebuild one. Subaru doesn't want us doing this because it's cheaper for them to have their own refurbishment center.

seems pretty much straight forward, just the need for a few different types of pully's for removing bearings, the big one for the CTV belt itself and such.
There is plenty of horror stories and people telling us mechanics that rebuilding them is impossible and not even worth attempting. They actually look pretty simple with far less moving parts than i thought.

Great video! I have a 2012 Outback with a CVT with an issue where once you come to a stop, as you first start to accelerate again it lurches and almost stalls out. Once you get past that it’s fine. What I have found is that if I put it into manual and just operate from the paddle shifters it works fine. Couple of odd things- this only happens once the engine / transmission have come up to temp. If you start driving on a cold day, this issue will start just about at the exact same time as warm air will start coming out the vents.
I’ve heard of this issue of the torque converter staying engaged and my theory is that at some point once the system heats up enough the fluid starts being diverted to the CVT cooler and that triggers the torque converter to stay locked when I come to a stop.
I’ve had a fluid “change” performed where you take the drain bolt off and then add more fluid into the side fill hole. They added about one more quart in than was removed. But it didn’t resolve it.
I was quoted $7k from Subaru for a new CVT (I have 170k miles on it so no warranty). Since it still works in manual I’ve just been driving it that way. Curious if having the torque converter services might resolve this.

I do not like CVT transmissions at all, I just don't think they belong in a car. As for a snowmobile yes, I don't see any other way of doing it. I don't see how these large cars they put out like the Outback like the biggest best model Subaru makes, if it's got a CVT I wouldn't even try to tow with it. I see that Subaru is going to reproduce the brat, I think that's so awesome I would love to have one but with a manual transmission. I know that's never going to happen so I will stick with my 2001 Forester with 5 speed manual because I can fix that with my eyes closed.😅

So i am an aircraft and auto mechanic. but im just starting to dive into these cvts. so to give you a good overview, i have a CVT-TH58A, HEV (hybrid) Summetric, 3-element, single stage, 2-phase torque converter type setup, now i had a serious event. The torque converter went out, i discovered there was almost no gear oil in the front differential, yes thanks subaru, and when in drive, only the front wheels spin, the rear wheels jump spin very slightly from time to time, the front spin, but the driver's side wheel spins more rapidly than the passenger, there is a loud thumping and jumping when acceleratiing. it feels like half a clutch so to speak and compare to to get an idea of how it feels. So its a thump/clang with a jump forward accel, and in-between thumps there is no accel. this happens rapidly according to the RPM's produced. its not as bad at higher speeds, thats if i can get it to higher speeds. I already changed the torque converter which was also bad. Also to add, i had to clean the TCM as all the piston like valves were seized in place. I got that working. But trying to get an idea of what is damaged is mind boggling. Since im just starting to get my experience and yes this is a great complicated way to learn. so Let me know your thoughts. thank you

Your comment about the correct amount of oil being a must, makes me concerned, I do my own oil changes, but at 30,000 miles I had a dealer do the service, and my engine oil was almost a quart overfilled, filled it to the kink in the dipstick instead of the second hole. I brought it back to have it corrected, they put the same tech on it. They said it was all set, so I drove it home, checked the oil, and it was still at the same mark. I have a 2022 hyundai elantra with the new IVT transmission do you recommend changing the oil in the transmission, they recommend not changing the fluid unless it needs to be repaired. That dosent sound rite to me.
