- About this Video:
Have you ever wondered 'what is a RP accent?'; have you ever wondered 'what is the meaning of RP?'; and more specifically, 'do people in England really speak in RP, and if so, should I speak in RP and how should I go about learning to speak in RP?'. Well, in this video, these are exactly the questions that I'm going to answer.
So RP stands for received pronunciation and in England we often associate it with southern British English speakers, we call them standard British English speakers. And do people in England actually speak like that? Yes, but not many actually. Probably less than 2 or 3 percent these days. And it is an accent that carries class implications, which may or may not be true, I mean these are just stereotypes, but in England we often associate it with people like the monarchy or Royal family, or people in positions of power, or people who have a lot of money. You know, so it does have associations.
The question for you as a non-native speaker, learning to speak English is, should you learn to speak in an RP accent? And really that's your choice, I can't make that for you, but what you should know is if you're trying to really go for this RP sound, that only 2 to 3 percent of English people speak in this way.
Whereas the accent that I'm speaking in right now, uses RP as a model, I have many, many, many of the characteristics of RP, and some people would even call me RP, but I'm more of this sort of general standard southern British English, which in 2016 is considered to be the sort of standard British English accent.
So, should you learn to speak RP? That's your choice, and you should know that that has a very specific association and stereotype attached to it, and what I talk in is this sort of standard southern British English.
You know the question for you is how do you go about working on RP or standard southern British English, and I guess you could do that in a number of ways. You could get a personal coach to take you through all of the sounds of English and all of the intonation pattern. You could get a couple of good eBooks, a couple of good books, with some CDs or audio. You could look for some free material online. You could go on youtube as you are probably now looking at this video and search for RP accent or British English accent or southern British English accent or standard British English accent, and see what comes up. There's a load of really useful stuff out there.
I've got a couple of great free resources that you might be interested in that focus on the 5 most commonly mispronounced vowels sounds and the 5 most commonly mispronounced consonant sounds. So you can click here at the end of this video and there are a couple of links that will take you to my website where you can download those for free and get started on your standard British English pronunciation.
So look, just before you do that, if you enjoyed this video and you want to find it easily again, then click like. And just before you do that why not subscribe to this channel because I post weekly videos here every Tuesday at 8.30GMT local London time. So I hope to see you here next week.

Probably the best Modern RP male voice on youtube. Your efforts have borne fruits. It is something most Romanian people do when they move to Bucharest. This antiRP movement in UK is insane and aticivilisational.
You have a really pleasant voice and pronunciation, I'm aiming the RP.
RP english is the clearest and easiest form of English. Believe a foreigner!
That's just not true. Central Ontario have the most neutral English accent and easiest to understand in the entire world. Any call centers for america they don't send to India they send here because we're so neutral it sounds like it comes from their own country.
What about Thom Yorke? Does he has RP accent? I’m just curious of it.
@ well we don't like your accent. All or almost all of foreigners love RP or the queen's accent and not a regional one.
Absolutely NOT!
The South African English accent is the most clear and stock standard English accent. Go Google it. You'll find that we, South Africans pronounce words with the most neutral tone and intonation.
@@dieterlesch Lol that's not true. As someone from New Zealand, I can say that General American English is much clearer than the South African English accent, and it may be the clearest one.
thanks for your work :)
i have been looking for a youtuber who has a native RP british speaker :) for a long time
I wish you had made this channel earlier. I have tried to find such videos 3 years ago to learn more about British English. Unfortunately there weren't so many. I have spent years to pick up the accent and until now I really don't know if my accent is really standard British. Some native speakers told me my accent sounds almost like London accent. Some of my friends know British people and said my accent sounds "heavier" than their British friends. I have no idea what I am speaking now. But still, the source I am using to improve my British accent is reliable (From British RUclipsrs). I think I pick up a little RP accent, It won't sound weird if we use a little RP when we speak I guess.
You are an inspiration❤️
what a wonderful, soft, relaxed and comforting voice and the manner of delivering the material... love it, thank you, good sir ^^
You have an amazing voice mate!!
great video. English is not even my first language and I've got a cockney accent lmao. as far as I know RP was used by the upper class and cockney by the working class.
I extremely love pronouncing British RP Accent ever since I was born under an auspicious star.
!your accent is fantastic
get a room
As a non-native speaker, I enjoy listening to the British RP accent. It has nothing to do with its history of being spoken by people in the upper class, with power and status.
The pronunciation and intonation overall sound more pleasantly. Not to mention the grammar used is more accurate. I think it's better for a non-native speaker to learn a language properly with as few grammatical errors as possible.
In my opinion, if one doesn't have a good voice, when one speaks with an RP accent one would sound more pleasingly.
I agree, it is also easier for me to speak in RP accent
To me it's very difficult
Definitely reminds me of the stuffy, high-class, elder, brit stereotype. Actress Maggie Smith is the first person I think of; of course, she is the absolute coolest brit I can think of.
I wish you could give examples, vocally, of differences between Southern British and RP accents.
This would be great!
Here in the US we accept you as the authority. We are still trying to get it right after 250 years.
Hello! I've just find your channel and it has very useful information. thank you!
Hi Mariana, that's great, feel free to share.
English Pronunciation Roadmap I heard you on BBC 6 minutes English
watch this in 2020. love just the way you speak! thanks for sharing this
Nice to meet you teacher 😍 cheers
Actually, RP is not spoken by the monarchy. That's 'Windsor English'. And RP was not considered an accent officially. It's meant to be regionless & was the standard, because it was meant to be clear for all ears. I realise things change and people's perceptions don't always match up to what it's 'meant' to be. That's a whole other conversation. RP is the standard that was used for the BBC, as you know, I'm pretty sure.
Great video thanks
I love this topic, Ashley.
I fancy your accent .. would love one day to speak it
Enjoyed the video!
Julie andrew made me want to have an RP accent lol
I extremely love pronouncing British RP Accent ever since I was born under an auspicious star.**
a friend that I like is rp accent 😍😍😳😊 I love this accent too.
Enjoyed listening to your voice.
Funnily enough, I had a bad stutter when I was a child. Back in the mid 1960's we had a visitor who came to the house once. He said I should watch the BBC news (This is in Australia, the ABC here showed it nightly) and copy the announcers. It seems that, similar that stutterers can sing clearly, if you speak in an accent, that uses the same pathways. People still comment on how good my speaking is, and that I should do commercials and voiceovers, not bad for a kid who stuttered badly :) BTW, I have a friend whose parents came from England. His father once asked some of his fellow immigrant friends who were visiting to guess where I came from, the consensus was within a mile of the BBC...
Bet ya he talks to his cats in an entirely different accent
Amazing Pronunciation ....Pl make more videos in your voice to follow you...
can you expain some lingustic phrases.
Great idea, I'll put it on my list.
I would like to know who sings English songs with an RP accent. Julie Andrews?
Speaks awesome English
I can’t attribute any reasons why, but as an American the accent sounds incredibly clear and intelligible from the beginning.
Although, we can mutually understand really any accent amongst our countries after getting used to it.
What should foreign people learn? RP, cockney, north... etc thank you so much
Geordie
No one learns north, it’s too complex and odd sounding
I hope you speak with posh accent too.
Like the video, all the others I have watched are very snobby.. very natural video 🌝

I decided to watch this video hoping to actually hear an "RP" accent instead of listening to someone talk about it. :(
And the best villains!
Very attractive voice
most of the questions you raise in the introduction are exactly the questions you do not answer.
Only 2% speak it yes, but it’s universally understood. Unlike some regional accents in the Uk. As an RP speaker myself, I’d recommend everyone learning english as a second language, learn the RP accent!
I want to RP Accent. Can you guide me for that?
U sound like howard Wolowitz 😂😂
but.... all dialects are English are received by someone, thats not very specific at all really? Surely there is a more specific and descriptive adjective for this. Most of your other adjectives are very clear and descriptive. I dont understand the connection of receipt to anything you're describing, which would make it a specifying adjective in any sense. Is there such a thing as unreceived English? Wouldnt that be English that no one hears/reads? I dont see any connection to that or dialects aside from some falling out of use. Could you please rephrase the description?
Yes, it does seem strange doesn’t it. This isn’t my own description, it is the one that has been used for many, many years, and has now become the attributed title for this accent. I suppose those who created the description were thinking that there are ways of speaking that are perceived as ‘well’ and ‘not so well’ received by the listener/s. I hope that helps. Thanks for posting your comment.
which city in uk use rp english accent pls tel me
I am from algeria and Iwant to learn rp accent
I'm algerian too & i want to learn rp accent too
Personal life section of William Regal wikipedia article brought me here.
Your accent sounds very familiar to an American ear? Has the standard English accent been influenced by the standard American accent?
Not even remotely
If you really want to up your game, why not go for an American MidWest accent?
Why did u say a "rp why" not "an RP" can u explain ? Is it said mistakenly or willingly?
At the time we did it, "What is a RP accent" was the exact wording that most people searched for on google/RUclips. We incorrectly thought that we'd need to say it in the same way in order for the RUclips algorithm to display our video. Not the case, but it's all a learning curve!
I am a Chinese who wants to learn how to speak RP with an Italian accent.
RP Republic of the Philippines.
Are you sure it doesn't stand for Random People accent?
This guy kinda looks like a non-ginger Kyle Connor from the NHL
can I call an RP accent an IPA accent? just curious.
Are you RP?

But can I learn kekistany accent?
Hi, you're free to learn whatever accent you want. Although, I haven't heard of a kekistany accent before. Thanks for watching.
Cockney, you bloody fool

So basically RP is Accent or what? Honestly i didn't get it XD, please comment if someone know about it...

Although 3% of English use RP, here nearly 95% English speakers in Sri Lanka speak that RP accent.
R u kidding???
@ SanJeewa Gunaratha. youre a 95% stupid liar. I have met so many BANGALI bangladeshi non of them speak RP accent.
That was sarcasm🙃 right?

Did you honestly say 'what's a RP accent'?
enter.the.void.II Unfortinately, yes I did. I was given some terrible advise to use this phrase because it was searched for more then ‘an RP...’. So yes, it’s grammatically incorrect ion, but was an unintentional mistake. If only I could change it :-( thanks for watching.
I have an rp accent and all of my friends make fun of me :(
Where you from?
It is shocking and sad that the country of origin of the most globalised language on earth has only 3% of its population speaking in the most clearest and arguably the best form/accent of the language
sorry but as non native I definitely don't see the difference between RP accent and other british accent...
But of course I see the difference between american accent and british one
Alexandre L really? 😳 omg it's weird. English isn't my native language too but I think there's huge difference between, for instance, cockney, Geordie, Manchester, Scottish, Welsh and RP. and listen to brummie accent (or just watch "Peaky Blinds") I think you'll see this difference.
Alexandre L as for me I'm not sure that I can see the difference between standard British and Australian pronunciation. on one hand i see this difference on the other hand I don't 😄 dilemma
what accent do you speak sir ?
Thanks for your message. As I say in the video, I would be considered by some as having a modern RP accent. Another description of my accent would be a standard southern British English accent. Hope that helps :-)
i see. it's a more neutralised version of RP i might guess. oh and what accent does non native perceive UK people speak like? sort of the british accent stereotype
@@thecfclad There are huge amounts of regional accents across the UK. Could be one of maybe 50-80
There is no such thing as "British English". English was created in England not in Britain during the reign of French speaking King Edward III, really VI when one includes the three English King Edwards prior to 1066.
Nope, thanks...
It's NOT "uh" RP accent, it's "AN" RP accent, How can you do a video about English if you can't speak it. AN apple . an english accent, an early start, an easy life
