I have played clawhammer for over a year as well. i never use a pick either. its weird but with a pick on i could "not feel the string"" so to speak. Thus i too was way more accurate without a pick. great video!

I play various stringed instruments: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, resonator guitar, cigar box guitar, lute, and Turkish Cura Saz. I recently bought a 70's Gretsch banjo that I am restoring and want to play. Unfortunately, last November I had a serious fall and nearly tore the middle and ring finger tips off my right (picking) hand. After 12 weeks of therapy I still do not have full use of those fingers and cannot bend the fingertips at all. The only fully functioning digits are my thumb and index finger. I will need additional surgery to repair the middle and ring fingers. I can play my guitars with a flatpick but anything requiring finger style is a no go.
Do you think clawhammer banjo would be reasonable to try once I finish the restoration? I would love more info about clawhammer style.
    Thanks.

I am so sorry to hear that. if you can bend the center knuckle on your finger i think you should be able to try it. you are striking with your fingernail so if the tip of your middle finger is tender then that might be painfull. But you can strike with your index. I believe you would be perfectly fine doing it that way. i have a lot of videos coming out over the next 2 months of when i began learning the clawhammer style 4 years ago. you may find them interesting, lol. thank you for watching.

@@BanjoAddictThanks for your advice. Unfortunately the tip joints of the middle and ring finger don't bend at all and the middle joints of each only bend a little. I'm stuck using just my thumb and index finger.
I see another hand surgeon next month to see if anything can be done surgically to get everything working again.
