I bought the first album in '73 and "Too Much Too Soon" in '74. I NEVER listened to the critics and I knew what I liked. All these years later, I STILL know what I LIKE and this clip proves that I was RIGHT!!!
I was in high-school. Everybody loved the album but was turned off by the transgender cover. Well you know how homophobic teens are. Think it hurt their brand.
I've always loved the twin guitar attack of Sylvain and Johnny. They would actually play counter melodies sometimes as opposed to the standard rhythm/lead combination. The Dolls were always VERY underrated in their musicality.
All of them were so different, they made the perfect street gang or proto punk rock group! So very correct in their influence on not just punk bands, but forget both ‘80’s metal or some ‘90’s alt rock if the Dolls didn’t disturb the peace in the mid ‘70’s first! Cheers!
Chimps say “underrated” when they are too stupid to fool anyone into believing they have a legitimate opinion. Nothing underrated about the dolls. I did a survey when i worked with Hal 9k & out of the billions of people on the planet, 99.9 percent that heard the first 2 albums were absolutely enamored for life. Holywood numbers don’t depict anything but how well the chimps will believe something is underrated that isn’t
I grew up in a small conservative town, remember how dangerous and exciting it was to first put on that record. It still gives me that teenage feeling.
Loved this performance. I remember watching it the night it aired with my best friend Karen. We were 12 years old and I was in love with Johnny!! So many good memories. The 70’s were the best!!
Chatterbox was recorded more professionally as the new york dolls had higher budgets- Johnny was too trusting of people and always got put on worse labels. He could’ve had much better treatment on a major like the one the Dolls were on- probably would’ve become a household name
But the bassist was “Killer”….. 🤣😉 Seriously, Jerry Nolan is was one of the most rocksteady drummers of all time. He proves the old Jazz saying that a band is only as good as their drummer. (I’m some cases, its not technical ability like Neil Peart, who is a good example, the first Rush album rocks, but they sounded very Sabbath. Then, Peart, came along and completed “Rush” like Nick Headon for the Clash Dave Grohl did for Nirvana. And it’s subtle, but John Densmore is one of the tightest drummers of all time who goes a bit unrecognized. Some classic and seminal bands had solid drummers like the Beatles, for one, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, AC⚡️DC, but they wouldn’t make any top 10’s of all time. He and Johnny really were on the same page. I had a drummer like that once. They are almost impossible to replicate, and only luck will land you with another drummer who influences the songwriting

Outstanding performance by JT here. Vocals even seem better than some of his later tunes.
What he did later was much weaker .
Johansen is doubling him here

Johnny lots of things, don't forget he wrote and sang the F'in tune!

Fantastic footage. And a pretty intense Johnny !
Jerry rippin it on that infamous pink drum kit .

Sylvain has a great sound. Thunders just rocks the fuck out of this song. Best version, so far found. ❤️
Check out the version from Club 82 on Bob Gruen's DVD-way more intimate footage.
