    Hello friends!
    Welcome to the last video of the year. I really did not think I would make this video, but here it goes - 10 ‘Rare’ Hoyas I Think Are Overpriced.
    We all witnessed how prices increased this year. Whether it be due to the pandemic, social media, RUclips videos, plant ‘influencers’, or what not, this can’t be denied. Some this hoyas in my humble opinion are honestly not worth the price tag, so I wanted to make a video about this trend because it is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I hope you can enjoy the video and not take it too hard. It’s not meant to be taken as anything more than just a joke.
    I hope you are having good holidays and back to normal videos soon. As normal goes on this channel.
    MIRO

    I feel towards Hoya retusa as you feel about Hoya compacta. Except I also feel that way about Hoya compacta. Also I agree about Hoya serpens. I really did my best and it never did well, even in high humidity. I would only buy it again if I could keep it in a large cloche or terrarium. I loved that at the end of this, you brought attention to how many things you could buy with that money besides plants that are susceptible to dying from numerous ailments.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 года назад +4

      You will never forgive me for loving Hoya retusa and sending you that pic once, will you? 😂 I really don't like most of the Hoyas from this list. And I certainly wouldn't buy them at those prices. But hey, who asked me? I have serpens in cloche now, but it's too small. SH helps, so we will see. I won't buy one again if it dies, let alone for $100. And I agree. You could buy the entire setup - decent camera, decent lights, probably editing software, some external hard drives and have money left for Roquefort cheese.

    • @bonnieharris8855
      @bonnieharris8855 3 года назад +1

      I actually tried one in a terrarium. Nope, did NOT like that. So, growing in a pot under lights, 6-70% humidity. It's my room. In the summer it can get up to 85-90* in here, but in winter, I am keeping it wound 72-75*. Which is way too warm for me, but anything for my cheap hoya. Hopefully, they will all live and thrive. If not, well, I did not pay those kinds of prices for them!

    I've had a carnosa and pubicalyx for probably just over 5 years and they are so easy to care for that I recently started picking up a few more. I bought a wayetii and sigilatis a few weeks ago and picked up a crassiopetulata cutting today from someone that posted them for $10 on Facebook marketplace. She showed me her huge collection of plants and told me she had some other cuttings and she wanted to give me one and it was a Hoya AH074. I knew nothing about the plant and have limited space, but I thought that her giving me a free cutting in addition to the one I was buying was such a nice gesture that I took her up on the offer. I didn't realize it was an expensive plant. 😯

    I just have a Hoya Crimson Queen. It's my first Hoya and to be honest I do really love it, but I wouldn't go out my way to find rare and different varieties of them just because I love them. Love how they grow, but I don't want every variety out there. Being content to me has become more important than having many plants that I can't take care of correctly. Just trying to appreciate the plants I have and celebrating the growth they have. It's actually helped a lot and when I see a new plant I don't feel like i need to buy it or want it.

    Hi Happy New Year! I just found your video. I agree with you on not paying the high prices for a tiny cutting that might not live. I’m not into the rare or expensive plants. I find the more common ones do not stress me out and I enjoy them.
    I am just getting into wanting a few Hoya’s. I have been adding plants to my home in California USA since 2012. The most I have ever paid for a full large plant was $32.00 US dollars. Thank you for stating fact the plant prices have gotten too expensive.

    • @BasiePlants

      Some prices are justified, but in my opinion none of these are. And I also don't think we should own every plant under the sun. Especially rare ones. There are people who are true collectors, but I think a lot of people have these 'rare' plants just because they can.

    Miro, can I just say it's liberating to hear from another hoya lover that they don't like Compacta. I have never really liked it, and I just don't understand why so many people are in love with it. I do like Grey Ghost and AH074 but I would not pay a crazy price for either of them. For Wilbur Graves I've seen and heard a lot of things about it that make me think that it's possibly a scam. I have seen several that start with that beautiful variegation and then revert to very little or no splash. Others say it needs special LED lights to keep the splash. I'm not enough in love with it to spend money on that one. I'd prefer a Pubicalix Splash, or something else. My favourite hoya purchase so far has been Callistophylla and I got it early enough that it wasn't overpriced, and the cutting I bought had 7 leaves, with multiple nodes.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 года назад

      I honestly bought my compacta because that was the first time I saw it offered for sale. So it was one of those FOMO moments. But I dislike them. I wouldn't pay that money for AH074, Grey Ghost or Wilbur Graves either. Yes, splash can increase/ decrease in relation to the light and more consistent light will give you better splash = LED light. I love calistophylla! It is one of my favorites. Now, that's a stunner.

I never took cuttings from it except for once after a move when a few strings got damaged and needed to be removed. The vines are about 2m long and I am very, very proud of this plant. You're right on the money (pun intended). Prices for these plants have gone astronomical. Until people stop paying these ridiculous prices the prices will continue to increase. It's all about supply and demand. Once the demand stops, sellers, in order to get rid of their inventory, will be forced to reduce the price, thereby driving prices down, either that or be left with excess inventory. Unfortunately, people being greedy and having the "I have to have it mentality" will continue to pay these outrageous prices.
    I saw an auction the other day. The seller said bidding starts at $20 - the first bid on the page, the very first one, from someone who "had to have it" bid $125! They didn't win, nor even come close as other bidders continued to drive prices up exponentially. It was very disheartening to see this.
    So - you are 100% correct - many hoyas are waaaayyy over priced. I couldn't agree with you more.
    Have a great new year and I wish you the best of luck in the coming year, and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

      It is really becoming crazy. And yes - I was thinking the same. We should ALL stop buying these plants and the prices will come down. But of course, not everyone will do that. I think we will see some price increase in the next year as well.
