The story I mentioned in the Papyrus segment: One time after school I was driving my friend home and she had this idea where we’d both use our phones to call a chinese restaurant and then put them right next to each other and see how long they argue trying to figure out what was going on. It actually worked and was pretty hilarious because it kept going for almost maybe 3-4 minutes, but for some reason I felt super guilty about it. For you unscrupulous louts out there feel free to try it yourself with a friend and report back how it went
Undertale also includes plenty of homages to JRPGs. The most obvious references are to the Mother / Earthbound franchise -- from Frisk's striped shirt and finding burgers in garbage cans to the UI (which was also standard for many early JRPGs in general) and subversion of genre tropes. Mettaton pulls off a parody of the iconic Opera Scene from FF6. The Core bears some of the same aesthetics as the Ocean Palace from Chrono Trigger. Additionally, the lead-up to Undyne's battle in the Neutral and Pacifist Routes is eerily similar to the lead-up to Magus' boss battle in Chrono Trigger, and the text "The Wind is Howling" is a reference to "The Black Wind Howls" from Magus' fight. Having the ability to talk to and spare enemies is likely influenced by the SMT franchise. In Ys II (way back in 1988), you gain an ability to disguise yourself as a monster and speak to enemies (who would otherwise engage you in battle) in order to obtain information, so that might have inspired Toby Fox, as well.
Personally I prefer the Deltarune boss catalogue to Undertale’s mostly just cause how good Jevil and Spamton NEO are. I’d love to see you guys rank Deltarune bosses too. Still think Sans and Omega Flowey are masterpieces of boss design though.
I’m waiting till more Deltarune chapters come out since the chapters on their own don’t have enough bosses for a video really, will eventually though. And yeah Jevil/Spamton NEO were great
I've never played undertale before, yet your commentary is very interesting and insightful. Really love your content, the editing is good, the script is well constructed, and the pacing is well done. (Now I must ask) best geometry dash bossfights when?
Alex here, I second Jack’s message of thanks! Also best gd boss is tough cuz I haven’t played since maybe 2018 but I remember really liking Turbo by Laserblitz. Worst goes to that one level by Abstract Dark in the demon gauntlets, fuck that fucking level
Great video, Alex! Undertale is an excellent game (I'd place it in my personal top 40 favorites), and it probably has my second favorite boss roster in any game behind MGS 3: Snake Eater. For the life of me, I never could beat Sans and eventually just gave up on finishing the Genocide Route. Undyne the Undying actually took me 4 hours to beat (longer than Sigrun and Isshin, the Sword Saint), so you can imagine how much I struggled with Sans. I guess that marks the limit of my bullet-hell skills. Lol. Also, hearing that you played this game back in Middle School makes me feel old, as Undertale came out when I was a Junior in College. Damn, time flies! Based on the bosses you included, here's my list (excluding Sans since I never beat him and Mad Mew Mew because I never played the Switch version): 10. Toriel (great tutorial boss that sets the tone for the rest of the game but also the simplest and least interesting fight) 9. Mad Dummy (a clever spin on the boss formula by having his own attacks damage him) 8. Undyne (fun fight that would rank higher if it weren't for the Genocide version being far superior and that fleeing shortens the battle immensely) 7. Asgore (much stronger version of Toriel's fight with the only real twist being the inability to spare the opponent during battle) 6. Papyrus (an easy but fun and relaxing fight that fits the character so well and does a good job of introducing platforming to the battle system) 5. Asriel Dreemurr (A great spectacle fight that is largely driven by the aesthetics, music, and emotional potency of the moment but lacks any semblance of challenge) 4. Omega Flowey (Similar to Asriel's fight, except far more demented and chaotic, and I like the way it pays homage to both Giygas from Earthbound and Chaos from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow) 3. Muffet (a clever gimmick battle that is arguably the most challenging on the Pacifist Route, although it allows you to dial down the difficulty by bribing her) 2. Undyne the Undying (a huge difficulty spike boss that feels incredibly epic and tragic, pitting you agains the eponymous true hero) 1. Mettaton EX (the most creative and versatile fight in my opinion with plenty of replay value on account of the different strategies you can use to progress the battle) I'd say that Undertale is my 5th favorite indie game behind Hollow Knight, Dusk, Shovel Knight, and The Messenger, and it's definitely a standout 8th gen. game in my eyes. Anyway, I'm enjoying your content as always and look forward to the next upload!
Undertale was one of those games I was really skeptical about before playing it, as the fanbase and artstyle certainly didn't give me the best impression, but I can't deny that once I finally played it I almost immediately understood what all the hype was about. Now it's easily in my top 5 Indie-games of all time, maybe even top 3, and a big reason for that are the amazing boss fights. Here's how I'd rank them: 15. *So Sorry* 14. *Napstablook* 13. *Mad Mew Mew* 12. *Amalgates* 11. *Toriel* 10. *Muffet* 9. *Undyne* 8. *Asriel Dreemurr* 7. *Undyne the Undying* 6. *Papyrus* 5. *Mad Dummy* 4. *Sans* 3. *Photoshop Flowey* 2. *Asgore* 1. *Mettaton EX* Personally I'd count all the fights with unique battle music as "bosses", hence why I included So Sorry, Napstablook and the Amalgates. Looking forward to the next video guys, solid work as always!
I still vaguely follow the community happenings and it’s insane how stuff that was so hard back in the day is fodder for top players now, can’t believe the day has come where what happened to Bloodbath has happened to Sonic Circles and stuff
I’m still pretty good at the game I’d say, don’t really have the time to sink into it to beat anything really tough nowadays but I’d beat a few insane/extreme demons in my day
Oh seems you didn't realize that the Omega Flowey boss is rubberbanded as well. Sure you can die but it drops you mere seconds before the place you have died and I believe in the final section it's impossible to die anyway. Awesome fight when you don't realize it, but when you do... well yeah...
Undyne the Undying is the true hero of the Genocide route. The fight against her is truly a duel of elegance and bravery. The only Genocide boss that doesn’t die in one hit, and beating her seems somewhat unnatural, as it’s satisfying but it seems like she *should* have won. Sans may be able to teleport the player and warp time and stuff, but he still only dies in one hit.
Sans doesn't want to even be a hero. He doesn't care about this world due to your resets and Floweys resets. That's why if you literally kill everything but spare one monster in the neutral route, he won't fight you, since he knows you'll win eventually and you will reset. The only reason he fights in genocide is to stop u from erasing the world, which means no more resets. That means is that for all sans know, he was dead for good, not even resets can save him. That's the only reason he fights.
sans didnt step in since i believe kr is a power that grows stronger the higher the target level is which would mean against the frisk that killed papyrus he may have actually been easier to kill
My list would be: (I’ve never played the switch version so Mad Mew Mew is absent.) 11: Toriel 10: Muffet 9:Papyrus 8: Mad Dummy 7: Undyne 6: Asriel 5: Asgore 4: Mettaton EX 3: Sans 2: Undyne the Undying 1: Photoshop Flowey
A cultured individual I see! Definitely coming eventually, we’ll be busy with new releases for a lot of this fall but make no mistake that it’s in the works and will be out in the near future
My favorite theme is also battle against a true hero, but this song's orchestral arrangement is incredibly better trust me. Search up: Undertale Battle against a true hero- epic orchestra arrange undyne. You'll find the RUclipsr that made the song has a chinesse name.
Love the list but I have to disagree on omega flowey as that boss falls into the losing thematic weight for the sake of being meta that you mentioned with sans. I get it’s supposed to be weird but it totally took me out of the game when I played it and isn’t hard in a fun way like the genocide bosses are
honestly i just didnt think about it as if the mad dummy is a person, it wasn’t really a conscious decision on my part. it’s like if there’s a robot and you’re like “oh its that guy” or something like that. i know its a dummy inhabited by a ghost that has some identity or another, but it wasnt something that popped into my head i guess
I remember when Sonic Wave was basically the hardest thing around and now it’s not even the discussion for hardest level, lol. Whenever I check back in on the community I feel like an old man. I did beat Hypersonic back in the day, back when that was actually considered hard by people
@@Cytonox i could probably do it with good concentration but yeah memorizing mostly, exept for the undying fightciz that is in some cases just reaction

I really like how the bosses have so much charm and personality that it's totally fine to have any of them as your favorite.

The Ren And Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon was so abysmal that Billy West (Stimpy’s voice actor) refused to reprise his role for it.
