  • Msholo, one of the African elephants at Zoo Atlanta, enjoys the herd’s Elephant Drum from Otto Environmental as part of Zoo Atlanta’s Play the Animal Way Virtual All-Day Play-a-Thon. Designed by necessity to be very durable for use by Earth’s largest living land mammals, this enrichment device encourages trunk manipulation and physical activity through interaction with a heavy object. A small hole at the bottom encourages the elephants to manipulate the object in such a way that food comes out.

I too visited Msholo in San Diego and also have a breathtaking memory of him. I was standing at the railing overlooking the upper pond. Msholo was in the water very near and below me. He very deftly and athletically began to raise his upper body in order to grab something yummy from the tree on the ledge above him. I sucked in a breath and let out an audible gasp because of his size and the way he moved. He is massive and obviously strongly, but he moves like a soft, sneaky dancer. He is one of my favorite elephants. I love and miss you Msholo. I'll have to take a trip to the Atlanta zoo just to see you!

I visited Msholo when he was with the herd at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In fact I was near the gates between the east and west yards when he and the herd walked through and was fewer than 6 feet away. From that perspective it was breathtaking to see just how huge he is. Even the largest of the females looked small in comparison. It's nice to see him in his new home at Zoo Atlanta...one of the zoo websites I visit daily.
