It is very different case if 10km asteroid is mainly composed of rock versus metals. If it is 10km iron-nickel asteroid, I would advice atheists to start praying for their dear life, it would be end of humanity and they who die first and fast are the lucky ones.

That psychological effect was the only reason people started accepting gold from others too: they knew that if they give food to others in exchange for gold, they are guaranteed to get food for themselves from the big guy who is exchanging food for gold, if people bring it in.
