Bought have nice clarity, but the 700s has a bit more volume and bass tone. The 01s sounds more compressed, which is not a bad thing....I actually like it, esp. when strumming hard, it keeps the volume in check.

I just picked up a FDO1S in mint condition for $30 with cheap case and strap. I took almost 1/2 inch off the saddle, neck adjustment and new strings. I'm very satisfied with 1 hour work and money paid.

Incredibly, I'm buying these very same Yamaha guitars this weekend from 2 different people in the same town in the SF bay area! Total price for these 2 is $260, a deal . I Just ordered tons of strings. I will unique tune the FG700s and the FD01s to CGCFAC and DGCGCD or DADGAD.

Ive been modding Yamahas out recently and repairing broken ones i find for cheap. So far i have
    FD01S
    F310
    F325
    F325D
    F335
    FG800
All have had repairs and mods. I usually razor the FB, round the edges of the board, bone nut and saddle and wood pins. I am polish and crown the frets and install sound hole pickups with end pin jack. Some required new tuners, but these guitars with these simple mods are like night and day difference. I also remove the top clear coat on the guitars top, i sand the necks and tung oil them. All of this adds to the tone and playabitlity. I also use 11 gauge electric strings on all my Yamaha's as the necks on these guitars dont seem to like the thicker acoustic strings without having to battle high action. Try a pair of electric strings sometime on your acoustics, just make sure they are 11 gauge or higher.
I als own the SLG200S silent guitar, but i got that new. But you can find used Yamaha solid top acoustics on the net for $60+ shipped. Crazy. After the work i do, folks are blown away by the playability and tone.

Depends on what part of the world you live in- but for the most part. Yes, Yamaha gives you a great product at a reasonably low price throughout all their products! :)
Other budget guitars to look out for (for USA only):
      - Washburn Guitars
      - Eastman Guitars
      - Orangewood Guitars
      - etc etc. PS. This is not to bash on Yamaha! More to educate people on their competition!

The FG700S is by far the warmer sweeter sounding guitar on this comparison especially considering that the nut and saddles were real bone on the FD01S...I think the rosewood on the FD01S is a composition board that they call Rosewood but it is not...The FG700S I believe has a Pau Ferro fret board that they called Rosewood before Pau Ferro became a desirable tone wood...

    • @ctcards2636

The rosewood on my FD01S is def solid, its not a composition. But mine is an older model. Maybe they have changed specs a little on the newer ones ? But im currently rebuilding an FD01S thats over 10 years old and its def a well made acoustic for the $. Im looking into getting a 700, but they arnt popping up used as often and i cant find a damaged one that needs repair. But the 700's are really nice. I own an 800 and that guitar is hands down my favorite of the Yamaha dreds i got. But i also really like my 335. Ive done a lot of work to my Yamahas but they all sound and play completely different than they did stock. These are fun guitars to experiment with changing stuff on. Bone nut, saddle and wood pins really effects the tone in a good way. For the $ ya cant go wrong.

  • @jimcatmandude9316
    @jimcatmandude9316 4 года назад +1

The 700S looks easier to play and smoother tone but the FDO1S rings a little better but it looks difficult to fret cleanly...I think I would prefer the 700 s and put a bone not and bridge on it...But the FD01 would do also...Solid top is the main thing and the 700S is old the wood is mellowed...

Thank you very much for doing your comoparison info and playing. Honestly I have listened over and over to your finger picking and strumming and I cannot discern any difference in the two guitars. Will you make more comments here about changing to the bone nut and saddle on the FD01S please? For bone parts, what was involved, cost, source? Thank you again, Andre'

The FD01S has a much brighter sound. The FG 700s is warmer and more rounded, mellow in tone. It might have as much to do with the bone saddle and different strings but both sound great. Just depends on the sound you are looking for. I'd say the 700 is better for strumming and for accompanying a singer while the FD01 might better be suited for finger style
