An Underground Experience is a seedy documentation of one of the most important icons of subculture. She is caught on suitably grainy video footage doing what she did best, performing in an underground club. Shot in the early 80's with punk rock as an audience the film is hardly stunning, yet this somehow enhances its authenticity. Nico's presence is both powerful and at times moving especially during the interview section.

When Nico said "quiet please" they all were afraid to death of her terminator eyes. She's a real femme fatal.
though a slightly mischievous smile followed.
and her imposing voice, typical of a German woman.
Edie Sedgwick was the femme fatal.
She did what she wanted and lived like she wanted. I'll say that for her. She made her mark too. I guarantee she wouldn't give a fuck what any of us thought or think.
Yeah, did what she wanted. Like giving her own kid heroin.
+OrangeTabbyCat ....Can't say I disagree with your sentiments Cat. I think most of these people. These artists are very, very, ambitious people. Very ambitious. Not always for money. Not always for fame even.............but for recognition, not always MASS recognition but recognition nonetheless. I think there is a certain inherent selfishness, self absorption which goes with that ambition. This is not only true of the Robert De Niro's and the Derek Jeter's and the Andy Warhol's but it is true of the second rate people who try an never really make it. I never really liked super ambitious people. I mean it. I didn't generally like them. I didn't find such OBVIOUS ambition attractive at all. Nico was a very self absorbed woman who had such a low overall view of life and people and living that she thought heroin was a better option for her son. Pretty narcissistic but consistent.
Don't smack yer kids.
In the 70's people weren't so negative about drugs yet; i think she just wanted to share with her son what she (and many others for that matter) considered the best feeling in the world; being high on heroin. From that perspective it isn't that bad what she did.
Heroin? Gimme a break.
I´ve seen Nico, Lou Reed, John Cale and Velvet Underground live, love them all, this one touches me deply and personally, you know, this song, someone I loved and still love, memories...
I can only imagine the sounds your ears have heard
Wow! I’m extremely envious
Your so lucky,i wish i had seen them, what year did you witness them? When you are into lou reed its as if its been written about yourself, how amazing, kept my head above water they surley have
wow
Te envidio
In 1982/1983 Nico gave a solo concert in Utrecht, Netherlands.
She sang while accompanying herself on wooden xylophones, six or more of them, small to large. After a few songs the xylophone she had played was replaced by another one, and then again another one.
It was probably the most memorable concert I have ever seen. Her performance was brilliant.
Unfortunately I have never found any recordings of the event.
any luck yet?
This is the person and the voice that Rock historians credit as among the progenitors of Goth; and BOY did she define the genre. I love the fact she is smoking as she doing this performance.
This is definitely one of the first goth songs. Velvet Underground is still underrated, even now.
@@christofyre what makes the song goth? I would’ve never thought goth upon listening to it. I do like some goth music and artists but I’m not that well versed in it so I’d like to know what exactly makes this one of the first of the genre.
@@Mysteriuminiquitatis1998 Nico’s music is often credited as the first gothic rock records because of the melancholic vibe, droning instrumentals, funereal drums, her harmonium and John Cale’s production. It’s the overwhelming sense of sadness, loss and gothic poetry, even her look the eyes ringed in black eyeliner, jet black hair she dyed after parting ways with Tom Wilson and Verve records and her stage presence, she was often called the ice queen, she commanded an audience it’s very reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure, Siousxie and similar artists who later paved the way for gothic rock in the late 70s.
The drummer is amazing, those fills really make the song.
Right, he really make the sound much better than the record
Lol not like mo who didn’t know how to play a lot lol
@@hugosophy lmao its true, but she was part of velvet anyway, exist some kind of respect for that
@@hugosophy she didn’t have to know “how to play”. She had her own distinct style that no one had at the time, it fit the velvets perfectly. Loaded would’ve been 10x better if Mo was available.
She is so high here. Not many heroin addicts are this motivated and creative. Nico was so unique.
there are lots of functioning to the point of creating art heroin addicts sadly for them (often) from xanadu did kubla khan a mighty pleasure dome decree
Who's listening THIS MASTERPIECE in October 2020?? I LOVE NICO
I am. Nico was a masterful goddess
28 November 2020 on 5 o 'clock in the mornin' 😍😍😍🤘🤘🤘
Yes I do. Good luck.
Me!!! 2021 and counting…X
Digging it June 2021. A real treat to see this snapshot from another, better, time, when we were all blessed with an abundance of wonder, strangeness and magic.
Nico came from somewhere else, and we were lucky to have her.
Outstanding. There've been covers, but none has the devastating emotional impact of Nico's version. Legend.
Art, will bee history,
she's so powerful, a true icon, dearly missed ...
A junkie, negligent mother who got her own son hooked on junk and a Nazi wannabe racist.
@@messierobjectm1 don't talk so bad about your mum...
There is just something powerful and elegant about this song. And it rocks. I've always loved it. would be great live.
True Gothic
gothic like patti smith is not the grandmother of punk
Love the ambiance, her presence, her voice, everything. THIS is underground, all the rest belongs in the extratrosphere. And I love underground.
Seriously? I just don’t get her voice and how this is so.....good? Certainly no D.Harry, no C. Hyde, nobody in my opinion. Off tune? I just don’t get it.
@@petertrout8140 It’s real tho.
@@Zenhumanist possibly, but I still don’t get it. Compare her to any other rock singer? (Ie. Chrissy of the Pretenders, Linda Ronstadt, name any others???). I’m probably just old and like singers in tune.
@@petertrout8140 she was unique, honestly Deborah harry to me is overrated she was the typical look at me I was a playboy bunny and I can sing Nico was way more real

This is a great version of Tomorrows Parties..great band backing her up here.
Awesome post...
I was here... It was Preston warehouse.. Used to be down a back alley next to the church on friar gate... Best club ever.. Every Friday and Saturday of my youth was spent here. Alot happened here!
where is preston i wanna be there
@@grahamchapple3552 it's in Lancashire... In the North west...it's not the same these days sadly 😕🥰
Forever, strange, beautiful, enigmatic, sad and lost. There has never been anyone quite like her. That voice is so strange and alluring. Her life is a cautionary tale.
Yeah... never date a French filmstar
I saw her in Rome, playing the harmonium with her band The invisible girls: greatness and decadence
never saw someone sing that great and look that baked at the same time.
"baked" , yeah, she was a heroin addict , I'd rather watch her than those looking un"baked".
Jerry Garcia
Yeah, absolutely
As a woman Nico was the coolest to me never had to look slutty or anything to get the attention she deserved
@@HeadNtheClouds drivin that 🚂
She is beautiful, looks so haunting, and her voice is incredible, like iced over water teasing us to walk upon walk on it.
I don't care if she was clean or high, this is a fantastic performance. it's so real. no bullshit here
NICO, is fascinating and mesmerizing . Not enough can be said about her. Stunning.
Aloha,
Richard
If I had a time machine I would set it for that date and go. The one and only Nico. She sure was so fantastic in so many ways with out knowing it and not caring. About as unfull of herself as possible is what makes her just so fucking unique.
her physical beauty was exaggerated by beautiful heart soul and voice
I love Nico, even if she was drug addicted, even if she was mad, she was so gothic, dramatic and full of poetry
Those things dont mean (bad person) sometimes it can mean the total opposite
@@judithpowell154 spon one
Even if? You suck!
Even if? You couldn't carry her balls in a paper sack.
Wow
Saw Nico twice during this period, Nightmoves in Glasgow was magickal. Magickal times for magickal people, ghosts of Christmas past!
I'm jealous
but she sang the song for the Christmas yet to come?
Lyrics and chanteuse perfectly intertwined in a never-ending last waltz
She went to live in Manchester because the smack was so available and good quality at the time !!
and it's a cold fact
I know this to be true because Toots Deville told me that at their gig Nico gave her and Willy her number and said to come over and hang out. Toots said she had always loathed the vampiric Warhol and had judged Nico accordingly, not to mention expecting her to be an overbearing Hun. Pleasantly shocked to be so mistaken she found Nico to be one of the most genuine, sincere, and truly down to earth persons she ever met. And the dope was some of the best she ever had.
Her eyes are so scary. But I love how she sings, it's fascinating.
She looks nothing like that when she’s blonde
I swear her eyes were brown back then😳
hollow somehow probably drugs yeah... i think they were always see through
Scary is sexy , exciting & I like scary women ❤️😵💫👹

Love this. I agree completely.
Beautiful comment , beautiful lady I love Nico forever
Love the way she performs and smokes that cigarette at the same time.
very pinned and the voice is nico
No, she wanted to say ''another Bowie song'' because she sang ''Heroes'' just before this.
She says: ''Another Bo....eh Lou Reed song''
I have the hole concert on the original VHS that's why i know.
I'm a big fan of Nico's for years!
Thanks to You Tube more people can enjoy this unique, great artist.

I love that Siouxsie & the Banshees did an excellent cover of this.
Yeah and it was shite i adore nico and the early bsnshees but call it as it is
A poor version by their standards
they're playing all live!! something most people don't do anymore...she's absolutely amazing, just like the band behind her
Like a voice from the End of the World.
No i would say the beginning of the world

Mesmerising , enchanting and Beautiful. RIP Nico.
She reminds me of a younger Dianne Keaton with Klaus Kinski eyes
+Jonathan Williams Young and fat.
Klaus Kinski's "Jesus" is a classic. Probably the best Jesus portrait ever conceived.
AMAZING SONG! LOVE IT!
This song reminds me of some Doors songs, especially the music
+Kayla Sh. written before the doors I think !!..
Kayla Sh. Funny it kind of reminds some of us of the velvets.
Petre .W. The Doors actually debuted about 2 months before the Velvets

She dated Jim Morrison for some time
LOVE this song, and she does it fantastically here
That amazing voice!!! She was great...

a true artist
This touches my soul on a whole new level
She was something else
one of her best songs!
Born 1991 but I'm so fascinated with Nico she is an icon truly
Thank you so much for posting this
THANK YOU
this is a tear jerker, straight up, the life written across her face... her clear love of the towering groove she's got erupting behind her... you feel like someone before the show complimented her deep singing voice so just to fuck with them she dropped it down into Nibelung (or the Hungarian version thereof).. that drummer knocked it out of the park
apparently in Spain living with her son got on a push bike went to the village for groceries ...............
love her! No other like her. Something so sweet and haunting about her sound.
Love it! Thanks for posting! ;)
i can't stop crying
RIP Nico!
All Tomorrow's Parties is my favourite Velvet Underground song ever!
They're still very influential as Joy Division is.
God bless Ian Curtis and Lou Reed!!!
Vividly remember spending a few hours with Nick in Prestwich, Manchester in 87, only a year before the fatal pushbike accident that took her from us. Tired of people saying she lost her looks, which is untrue, or that she was no good. I think Marianne Faithful and Nina Hagen imitate her, and that she still isn't credited for the huge influence she made upon music.
huge influence lol
Good man Howard 😋
Lou Reed lost his looks but no-one says so.
utter lack of any talent
@@messierobjectm1 And how talented are you?

this is really intense... whenever i see her either in photos or vids, she always seems so sad, almost like crying for help... it always moves me... and disturbs me at the same time... also it may sound weird, but i kind of envy her... can't explain why though...

Damn, was this version ever studio recorded. This is so good!
Life is very busy...and I never feel bad like I used to. I am so thankful for having experienced addiction. It gave me insight and gratitude for this life. It was an adventure, I just wish I could remember most of it...
Love this bands reinterpretation of this tune

Wonderful? She was a pretty well known incorrigible racist and proud of it.

Is a sadness to see her how the excess destroyed her life
Everybody is his on master of live. To me she was just a junky
yet she died from a bicycle accident -
It's what she wanted though. It was her aesthetic.

awesome. I touched myself impurely
4:15 is that Siouxsie at the left bottom corner?
her accent is even stronger here than in the original recording. Seems like she stressed it deliberatly. To me it sound really cool! Next to Dietrich she is one of the very few people who make the german accent sound cool.
I love her voice on this song.
Beautiful as ever.
She carried so much pain. I wish could've hugged her and told her "It's okay, you can cry."
