This was a very interesting and well made video. Hopefully you could make a video about lost/stolen Stradivari and Guarneri violins.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. Yes I am certainly considering a video like this, but I need to do some more research first. It could definitely make an interesting video for sure.

Just a note that yesterday Tarisio sold the 'Baltic' Violin by del Gesu for $9,440,000, this will therefore put this violin in 3rd position on the list. Everything else would be bumped down. I will make an updated list in July, after the next set of big 2023 auctions are finished. 08/06/2023 - Another update that the Empress Caterina Strad Just sold for $5 million + Fees, this would put that violin into the new 4th position!

There is no definitive answer to this but people have researched this. (from the research): In Stradivari's will (1729) it lists the value of some violins as 167 lire, about 720gS (grams of silver) or 48gG (grams of gold). In 1729, 720gS was worth £6 and 9 shillings, equivalent to £1,000 today. However taking into consideration todays GDP etc, Stradivari's violin would probably sell new for between $60-80k, which is not actually far off the prices of some high end modern makers.
