This video intends a way to make us understand how tensions could be adjusted on an industrial sewing machine.
I consider this topic of great importance because from it depends to get a nice sewing on an upholstery project.
By doing this procedure well, we will get balanced plain closing sewings. Besides, nice stitches on top view if referring to top decorative stitches (french stitches and over stitches)
For this demonstration, I have used the standard upholstery thread (polyester N°92) and a needle 120 (metric system=20 (Singer system) If we need to do sewings with a thicker thread it would be advisable to change the needle for a thicker one. Tensions must need a readjustment to get a balanced sewing.
I hope you find this information useful!

I completely agree.... the last method of showing the stitches and their tension is inspired...I'm going to make the same set up just so its so easy to see the thread balance...!

I agree. Absolutely without Peer.
I wish I could like this video more. THE. BEST. EXPLANATION I have seen for tension on my Pfaff.
There has never been a more detailed explanation on how to adjust the tension than this. I have now saved this as my go to reference. Great work
Brilliant visual at the end using the clear plastic sheets to show the threads being pulled into the center of the stack of material. :) You are so good at what you do. Thanks for ALL the help you've given all of us over the years.
Great video. I have a Pfaff and have struggled with thread tension until I watched this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!!
You sir are truly amazing, my Dad had an Upholstery Shop for 40 years and I wish he was here to watch your videos. He had a Pfaff machine and had a German guy come to the shop once a year to tune it up. I love watching your videos, thank you.
Наконец-то я увидела как это происходит!

i just started upholstering this weekend and i really tried for hours to get the tension done, im so happy i found your video, i have the exactely same system (Pfaff 145), nobody showed how its build together, only in your video you show really everything, very big thank you for your work!!!!
Best video on that topic I have seen anywhere! I now understand why I took a complete weekend for sewing a face mask back in March.
That gave my Do-It-Yourselfer-ego a deep dent…
This is the very best vid on this subject. No one else goes to this detail in the videos. Thanks.
This is the finest description of thread tension I have ever seen. Great job and Thank You.
The visual of the lockstep stitch in the clear vinyl and cardboard was genius.
Thanks so much for watching this video!
I've watched many tension setting/adjusting videos and this video is the most thorough from actual start to finish. Back to my problem machine with new found knowledge. Thank you again. Best video on the subject.
I like the way you explain without words 👍👍👍 greetings from Germany Blackforest
This video was well worth my time to watch. I never knew that improper tension adjustment could lead to a harsh/heavy sound from my machine and the last demonstration from 19:35 on was excellent.
Thannks, man! You saved my reputation today, I've just fixed my significant other's machine
OMG you saved my life as i bought a new machine and was loosing my patience with all those tension knobs. Now its all ok thanks to you👌🌟👏
I am so glad the videos are useful!
WOW, just WOW. This is the BEST video I have ever seen explaining the tension settings on a sewing machine. My hat is off to you. I purchased a used 1245 a few years ago and have been struggling with the tension ever since I think I finally get it THANKS to your video.

That was a great video like all of them.. I have a question for you if you don't mind. I have a Seiko walking foot. I can't seem to get the bottom stitch to look right. Always seems to like too tight. It looks like a straight line. Can you help please? Regards Jay 🙂
Great info! I fixed my issues by watching this video now my old machine is sewing like new. What size needle and thread are you using for the last part of this video? Thank you for sharing your knowledge...
Thanks for watching!
I used a 180=24 needle size. The thread is thick polyester 'double zero' here in Mexico. I am not completely sure, but I suppose it corresponds to 207 size.www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=polyester-thread-207
Bravo. does the same rules apply where 2 pieces of leather is sewn? like bottom vegetable tanned leather and soft top leather - like a belt for example.
Same 'lockstitch' rules are applied for any thickness of material.
Thanks for watching!
Very excellent video, I have a PFAFF 194 high post 2-needle machine. But I can't adjust (needle with the hook). If you could help me with this ...

I find some of the video you do fascinating to watch some clever methods you use,
On my singer class 7 twin needle oscillating shuttle hooks the big old cast iron machine used for marquees and parachutes ,
I am trying to sort out the left side at the moment as I only using the one needle ,
I seem to be having an issue, after stitching about 8 stitches in leather I am noticing the thread twisting, and snagging under the leather, then the twisted thread appears on top and some times it has twisted all the way to the thread pick up lever,
And some times when trying to free my leather its stuck , due to a second loop not made it through, But why is my thread hell bent on twisting ,
Ive tried different threads and needles and the issue is the same out come, its a little better if I use thicker leather but still happens after 10 stitches,
Check out the thread tensions up and down to verify they're in good condition.
Some parts of the leather material are harder than other portions If so, the needle and thread rubs causing twisted strands. The solution would be a thicker needle to make a bigger hole to let needle and thread pass through freely.
@@Cechaflo After you mentioned size of thread to needle, I thought lets check my threads again as I own several that look the same but not all tried ,but as there are no label`s on them.its hard to tell the difference in size as the sizes is minimal,
I noticed three of the same threads in size ` that`s what I thought but slight size when looked very carefully and felt that tiny bit thinner,
So I gave it a shot , and got to tell ya man that machine sewed without any issues, weeks and weeks of trial and error stripping and cleaning, and even replacing parts, you know how it goes when just learning,
Big thank you man, if this was not coming from you I would not of went back to recheck under close inspection , Thank you again.
Hello Caesar, informative video on the machine's settings.I have a machine 1245 very much I like it in work. How thick is the thread minimum it can be sewn?
Dear friend, I have used the standard upholstery thread 92, but it can sew with a thinner thread if used on thin fabrics. According to the manual these machines can sew from 110=18 needle size to 180=24 needle size. I have tried with a 90 needle size with 92 thread and it also sews excellent. I used it on small thin leather items.
@@Cechaflo I had in view thread 10 poorly is beginning to sew, 20 thread the very normally.
👏👏👏
Hey Cechaflo! Once again, a great video! I balanced out the tensions on my 1245, top and bottom, no dots on either the top or bottom, but, I'm sewing with auto leather and in sharp corners the seam doesn't seem to be tight enough! The thread can be seen pretty dominately when turned right side out..?? is it possible to get a tighter seam and balanced? Any ideas would certainly be appreciated! Thanks!
Glad to hear from you! If the upper tension is tightened enough and there is still a 'loose stitch' it could be the 'hook point' would need to be a little bit faster, of course to catch the 'thread loop' faster. By doing this the upper tension would be alleviated and you would not need to tighten it too much.
It is only a suggestion. You should try the best you feel is ok.
Thx for getting back so quickly! I was able to adjust stitch length and trim around the sharper corners which kept the stitches from pulling so hard and that seemed to pull them tighter. I think it will be ok, but if not, I'll give your idea a shot. Thx so much for your response!
