Did I find my style? Lessons from NOT sticking to painting in 1 style | Sketchbook paintings

  • To stick or not to stick? This age old discussion has gotten artists of every level having an opinion. Style can be so difficult to define and personal style is something that is ever evolving - I'd like to think that it's ok to enjoy more than 1 cuisine of food or listen to different genres of music (both of which are also art forms).
I used to have a mentality of wanting to stick to that 'one way' in order to 'finally' get to that style I always wanted... until I hit creative stagnance.
Today's episode is all about me moving away from my usual loose floral paintings into appreciating impressionist styled paintings and creating my own version. I'd love to hear what your thoughts are about this 'style' thing so we can learn from one another

Jillian, I just appreciate you so much. I love how real you are. Transparency, I believe, is the honest window to growth. As long as we are alive, we are learning, and as long as we allow ourselves to learn, we will continue to grow. Growth opens the door to change and perhaps our style continues to evolve. Just paint I say and create what brings joy to your soul.

Your style and your painting is yours! That's an inspiration because there is no one type of watercolor painting style. Your work, your art, is yours alone. That should be the mentality of all. I love your style of painting because it's free and loose and colorful. Your imperfections are beautiful! Thank you for sharing for all to enjoy!

I loved this topic. I so resonated with you, when you said you thought you would find your style and others would recognize your work. I have a very successful jewelry making business that I'm sick to death of. I knew I was hitting a wall last November when I just couldn't hardly drag myself to the bench to make another pair of the same old earrings. I started doodling in bed one night and then the next day bought a $10 set of water colors off Amazon to add some color to my doodles. Next thing I knew, I was buying brushes, paper, then better paints and better brushes and better paper. I obsessively watch You Tube videos and spend all day, every day playing with my paints. My family and friends ask me about my jewelry business and I find myself lying about it and saying I'm working on it. Truth is, I haven't picked up the torch in 4 months. I almost feel..no, I do feel guilty about painting, when the jewelry business brings in so much income. Now, about my style. It's really hard learning something new and not being immediately good at it. I keep hearing...practice, practice, practice and in the mean time I want to find my "style". I wake up in the morning excited to paint, even though what I paint isn't great. I have to be true to myself and hope that this journey through water color will bring me back to the jewelry bench. Hey, who said I can't do both?

I called this my Identity Crisis...I always felt, I needed to paint the same style and similar subjects (ie. landscapes or florals) to maintain my identity as an artist, so when someone sees my art they will recognize my work. What I have discovered as I have gotten older, (much older, hahaha) I truly enjoy versatility! Painting, drawing, whatever the medium, I create whatever inspires me in that moment. I feel, if it brings me joy, then hopefully, it will bring others joy!
This was a great topic and video, thank you for sharing.

Jillian😊! You speak so much to me. My motto that I have repeated quite frequently of late is “Set Yourself FREE” I totally agree with your statement about autonomy. And I believe that the old phrase “wherever you go there you are “ can apply here too. You take you eyes, your brain, your emotions and your unique movement of brush, pencil etc with you…thru whatever medium or subject you are exploring. Like Dorothy in wizard of oz, you’ve always had it within yourself. Personally, finding IT is tangential, maybe a distraction even. Same with intuition really. I’m here for the experience, the arting itself as a practice. I think IT comes from brush miles and building, creating countless paintings, learning & trying new things that challenge our fears & tickle that creative center. There is no fast track or way around learning & experience. I savor the path. Thanks so much for sharing Jillian💜👋💜

I agree, art is a journey of expression and exploration ❤ While those paintings of yours are many different styles, there is still a softness and dreamlike quality to them that make me totally identify them as your artworks!

    That is so pretty!
I am an art rookie telling myself not to feel like an imposter because I only started to explore past aged 50. I am fascinated by everything, learning anything that fascinates me and while others may see my style quicker than me.. I have to laugh and say it’s ok that I myself, the infant explorer, dont even know what is is yet!

You are quite the artistic philosopher! There are so many artists whose style I admire, and would love to be like. I can follow their tutorials and produce a painting that I love, but it’s their style, not mine. I’m really struggling to find my own style.

Thank you Jillian for voicing how important it is to play and experiment with different mediums and subjects. So often I feel guilty about trying something different and then become overly critical of the result. What I have forgotten is to play, explore and have fun. ❤

You say so many things I relate to. I feel like I’m going through a really difficult time lately. I so much wanted to paint in a looser style, and it’s a lot harder than I ever would have imagined. I keep practicing the same things, and I’m honestly getting bored. I’m not even that good at it!! I’m playing and experimenting, but as you said, I feel like I should be better at this! This will never be a “job” for me. I do it for myself, but I’m still so self critical.
I’ve tried a lot of different mediums, and I absolutely love watercolor. Before this I did a lot of acrylic, and I’m sorry if I sound like I’m bragging, but I was good! I was good at colored pencil, even pastels. But watercolor is sooo hard!

@annewatman677 "But watercolor is sooo hard!" It really is! I enjoy it, too, but I can do better work in other mediums as well - which always makes me question why I keep futzing with this one. I think it is, in a big part, because I really love watching the paint flow on wet paper. Acrylic, oil, pastel, none of those offer those tiny moments of suspense as I wait to see the result. Which, by the way, is always most exciting when the paint is still wet and vibrant - because it can look really amazing, but then dry fainter and duller. But then I mess around with acrylic a little, and it is rather nice on occasion to have paint go down and stay right where I put it,. Plus, and I doubt I need to repeat myself, WHITE - and other light colors. So easy when you put down darker colors first instead of trying (and too often failing) to reserved the white. Yes, I can add it back, but it always looks better reserved than added.

@@CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx Thanks for your response. The other part of my problem is I’m good at copying. I have been following some realistic watercolor tutorials, and I really had some beautiful results. But, I was basically copying someone else. Now I’m trying to figure out how to do more on my own, and I really do love the looser style. I just keep running up against a wall. I haven’t given up, and maybe I just need to take a break.

    • @CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx

@@annewatman677 Don't give up. Keep playing, but now that you have the basics down, maybe start working from life or photos instead of copying other than for fun or to learn new techniques. Loose, however, is hard! It looks like it should be so simple and easy, but it is like we are programed to make things look as close to reality as possible, so when you do have something that actually looks loose, you (I) find yourself feeling it needs just a little more detail to make it right - and once you do that, discover it may not have needed anything more - or more like nothing close to the direction you thought to go. 😆

@@CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx You’re so nice. Thank you! I think part of the reason I like watercolor is because it’s so challenging. I have a small pile of practice pieces, and when I look again later, I actually like quite a few of them. It helps to walk away! Also, I’m impatient with myself!! ❤️

    • @CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx

@@annewatman677 You seem quite nice, too. Maybe that is part of watercolor as well - we watercolorist, in general, are very nice people. 😊 I agree with you, too, about walking away. Many of my paintings as well look better once I have backed away from them for a little bit. Problem is, too often, I don't stop and walk away quick enough, and then wreck it - esp when trying to make something that is loose. And yet, I keep trying. Let's just keep trying. We'll get there eventually. 🥰

Thank you Jillian for sharing these thoughts, I feel the same and thought something was wrong with me. I find myself painting totally different subjects from what I’ve been doing, it’s kind of a force/attraction or exploration that brings me to paint this or that. Of course I keep coming back to my favourite/loved subjects but also it’s using/applying the different techniques (and even sometimes mediums) I would do on different subjects to the one I gravitate more (hope it make sense, it difficult to put into words) and the combination of those different techniques gives me quite nice results (even if it does always work out the first time). So I think I have to accept like you, that “style” always change, improve and most importantly evolve and I’m trying very hard to not to be so hard on myself. Love your paintings🥰Sx
