    I am new to the Falls cam and am catching up on names and videos. This is so much more interesting than most of RUclips and people need to get back into nature more. This helps those who want to be a part of it but can't physically go there. This is when technology gets it right. Ty for this experience and I can't wait to see more 🥰

    katmai is a slice of heaven and the bears are our furry angels. I love watching and want to thank explore from my heart as it was a life line when I was ill and in bed way too much. I have fallen in love with the quintessential teddy bear otis and wait for his arrival like a beloved family member. he is even in my prayers for a safe return. America is so blessed with these beautiful parks and animals. with my deepest appreciation to explore for bringing the experience into my home. thank you

I am in absolute love with these bears. I love MaMa Grazer and 747. I also of course, love Otis 💜💜💜💜💜 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻

    HOW OLD IS OTIS? SWEET BEAR💞

    • @Capt_OscarMike
      @Capt_OscarMike 2 года назад +1

      Otis is somewhere between 26 - 29yrs old....The Rangers # a Bear only after the same Bear ruturns to Brooks Falls/River 3 years in a row...which establishes their "making a living location" ... although some have been #'ed...were at the river for 3-6 yrs and havent been seen since which is usally not a good sign...but on occassion there are bears that show up for 3-4 years then dont come back for 2-3 years...then out of nowhere pop back up..
      Back to the KING, OTIS, THE ZEN MASTER 1st appeared at Brooks falls was in 2001 is my understanding... he was estimated to be about -3-4yrs old...So basically a new little guy on his own for the first time most likely...He returned in 2002 then again in 2003 & officially #'ed...He has not missed a season since 2001...anycase, in 2003 he would have been about 6-7yrs old (again...I'm guesstimating & I'm old like OTIS too...so can't remember off top of my head )..."typing out loud"...what I can not remember but will go with is his estimated age being based on his 1st appearance vs when they numbered him...I'm positive he was 1st noticed and logged---(not numbered but logged, charted or whatever the term is) in 2001....Became official part of the Brooks River Bears in 2003 ..
      However, if go with him being numbered in 2001 means he 1st appeared in 1999 (again, never heard of anything prior to 2001)...so if he was use 3-4yrs old & 1st showed up in 1999 ..then wouldve been numbered in 2001 & been around 7yrs old...fast forward, either way, puts him in the 26-29yrs old range...somewhere around in there...
      I hope I didn't cloudy the water too much...Point being, he is the oldest. most recognizable, most proficient and efficient Bear on the river ....also the most consistent ...He was never a sissy Bear either (don't think I would call any of those Bears a derogatory name even in gist) back in the day was the most dominant at Brooks River and kinda strange but also most resspected...at least seems like that....Especially this year, the bears that have been going to the river for past 5-10 years or longer ....it's interesting to witness them almost display or project respect to OTIS...most of the time...I realize all Bears are trying to survive but really wish one of the capable males would put a hurting on the noobie to the river who is causing issues for many...the really dark adult male..not a small boy but appeared this year for first time....he's the one that steals fish & really hassles OTIS...I literally became angry and screamed at the computer monitor when he kept taking OTIS catches the 1st day... Otis's 1st day and there's this newbie jerk Pirate Bear who stole like 5-6 fish that Otis caught in a row ... not gonna lie, was hoping OTIS would have a pow wow with a couple of the younger big males and be like the Godfather...pay them 10 fish each to send a message...or to make the Pirate Bear an offer he can't refuse....I don't want to see a life-threatening injury but wouldnt hurt my feelings for a few Bears to step up for OTIS and send NEW BOY an emphatic message...just to make certain Pirate Bear know...paws off OTIS's catch ...stay out of his office and don't even look at him...or as the saying goes...gonna have to pay with a pound of flesh...literally...
      Anyway, not to end on a negative note but being realistic....When Otis appeared this season I think every person, ranger, and even other Bears who are familiar and been watching or the bears were shocked...yet so happy to see OTIS...A lot of new people in chats I've noticed question why OTIS gets so much camera time...1st) because he can and 2nd) He literally is a legend...an icon....he will be talked about and compared to 100s of years from now....if didn't know, to visit Brooks Falls people either must use a float plane while most use basically a water ferry (a boat)....the Ferry Boat's name...Not THE ORCA or THE SEA-ME-LADies or something silly like that... it's simply...SS OTIS...of course, with OTIS...he may shock us again next season and we hope so but most have that gut feeling this is his last hoorah....He will probably be the last Bear to leave the River as the Light of the day becomes blanketed by the on-rushing darkness of the long winter....as OTIS begins his journey to wherever he has "Home Sweet Home" set up...He will likely turn back to glance at the bear cam one last time ...his good bye to all of us...then wabbles (waddles??) into the "sunset"...just pray he makes it back to his den and has a peaceful rest when that day does arrive...most likely we will never know nor should we...we're blessed to have this gift by Explore.org to be honest....
      HOWEVER, FOR NOW, NEW PEOPLE AND LONG TIMERS FEEL BLESSED EVERY SECOND WE GET TO WATCH OTIS THIS SUMMER....Always sad when a great athlete plays in his last game or a Naval Aviator makes his last trap on the boat...or has his/her final flight in whatever jet they fly...knowing they will never..ever fly in that type jet again ever ...as a passenger or a pilot...
      Yet in life...with every beginning there is an end... the differences are how people and personalities like OTIS decide or do go out....So enjoy while you can...and for those who will be around 5 years from now...check in on the Live chat....remember my words when I say that OTIS (if he is gone by then), his name will be brought up every single day by more than 1 person...

    • @ExploreLiveNatureCams
      @ExploreLiveNatureCams  2 года назад

      Honestly its hard! Many bears have identifying markers like scars, ear shape, muzzle shape etc. Rangers also use behavior to identify bears. Some bears prefer fishing spots or have specific fishing styles. The Bear Book also helps. www.nps.gov/katm/learn/photosmultimedia/ebooks.htm
