Please sweet Lord in heaven grant me a time machine so I can go back and relive the 80s all over again as a teenager in the glory days of music.Thankyou.Amen.
Have never seen this video until today. Very cool! I was DJing at a club called The Whisper in Van Wert, OH. when this came out. Played it as often as I could because it PACKED the dancefloor! If your making a playlist with some great tunes to drive to, this has to be on it! Every trip I take it plays, usually multiple times!!
Three of the greatest moments of my life: 1) Hearing this song for the first time in 1981. 2) Getting an email reply from Peppy after begging him to locate this video. 3) Finally watching this video on RUclips
Yep, summer of 81, in between 10th and 11th grade for me I had my first job, working in a garage so the radio was in my ear every day. This song, While You See a Chance by Steve Winwood, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oates and Santana's cover of I'm Winning were the big pop hits that were all over the radio that summer. To this day anytime I hear any of those songs I can smell the GoJo hand cleaner and motor oil in my memory like it was yesterday. Funny how something like that will stick with you for the rest of your life.
Great song from August/September 1981. Love this!! It peaked at #22 on Billboards Hot 100. It should have gone higher. Love this song. Their follow up “Falling In Love” should have been a major hit. Great ballad and good piano song to play. It reached #58 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart.
I heard this song today on Classic AT40 the 80s. As an extra which was to be their only Top 40 hit. I don't remember this tune from 1981, it has a great beat though.
@@peppymagoo Wait a second? The same Peppy Castro from Balance? If so, Breaking Away was one of my favorite songs of the year, the decade, and all time. I have never tired of it. I have never turned the station when it came on. How it wasn’t #1 is an eternal mystery to me. Thanks for making my life better with that song (and We Ain’t Got Nothin Yet, which I also love). Brian
Killer voice man, just discovering this band. I still have all my Blues Magoos records I got as a kid in the 90s, I was a few years behind but still, glad to have found this band now.
Too bad you guys didn't have more success with Balance. This song has been a favorite of mine since it was contemporary in the summer of '81. It was on the radio where I lived in Atlanta very little and forgotten almost everywhere since.
Boy, I remember this great song, i think it reached #20 on Billboard's Hot 100. Bob Kulick was a fantastic guitarist. I remember rock journalist Lou O'neill jr loved Balance and he was so happy that this became a hit, i used to subscribe to Lou's newsletter and read his column in Circus magazine. I know Bob just passed, terrible.
Thanks Peppy for posting this! I was playing this very song in the car today and it was a treat finding this video of the song here on RUclips. Balance is not forgotten and especially here in Sweden Balance still holds a special place when it comes to greatest AOR-music from the 80's.
Fantastic Band, Fantastic Song, love Balance since 1982! Sadly in Mexico the record were never released, it took me 6 years to purchase In for the Count on cassette, ( a good friend find it in San Antonio) and in 1997 I saw the two Balance albums on cd and finally in my collection, years later bought them again with the Rock Candy reissues with the Wiggy Bits cd. ( I have one cd for the Blues Magoos). Thanks Peppy for the good music and memories. Only need the Equilibrium album.
About freaking time this video came out! I’ve been looking for this video forever! Have this album on CD and remember hearing in 10th grade in 1981-LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
Loved this song when I was a kid. Could never find the record at the main chain stores, so had to special order the 45 from the local mom and pop record store! Great song....still sounds as fresh today as it did in 1981.
Those two first albums will forever be with me, so rich in melody, great musicianship, excellent songwriting and the band could be heavy too when called upon. Great song, love listening to it, love watching it.
i listen to them a lot during the summer on long bike rides inthe morning, it's a bit cold outside, but it's a fresh summer day and the tunes are uplifting
I remember see an NFL highlight show about 80's Seattle Seahawks RB Curt Warner and they played this song as they showed him breaking tackles for long runs. A weird memory to be sure.
Looks like the "In For the Count" line-up with Chuck Burgi on drums and Dennis Feldman on bass? Two of my all-time favorite AOR albums EVER! Thanks for posting some footage of this great band!
I bought this record when it came out! In the 1990s, I had a radio show on WCNI, a college station, and played this song once every season.Thank you Peppy for posting this!
I bought the album in 1981. I recall the clerk in Camelot saying the album “doesn’t have a slack track on it”. The song reminds me of a girl I had a crush on at the time.
Thank you for doing the work to get this posted. This is really one of those songs were you need the speaker to go all the way to 11. 10 is not enough. Finally, I get to see what Balance was like as a live, performing band.
I know my music a little bit better after 1981 so when I heard this song on today's Songpop list Summer Hits 1980-1981, I was like "nope. Never heard this one before!" So of course I gotta hear the whole thing 😊
This song should have been as big and everlasting as Walking On Sunshine, Celebration, or Everybody Have Fun Tonight. Probably drowned because their label didn't play the "payola" game at the time. I remember hearing this song twice on the radio. Twice! And both were on Kasey Kasem. If I ever become famous I'm remaking this.
@@peppymagoo You Wrote it? Kudos!!!!! It was my theme song when I retired. Still is, actually. Gives me an attitude adjustment every time I listen to it. Can't thank you enough!👍
I should’ve added: this appears to be a live performance,, and a damn good one too, not a lip sync, unusual for a show like Solid Gold - the only other time I can remember a live performance on Solid Gold was when Pablo Cruise did Cool Love from 1981 I guess, and it sounded BETTER than the studio version I swear!
Every time I hear this on the radio I think of the Mentos commercials. I think they ripped off the chord changes and rhythm for their commercial. This is definitely a feel good song and under appreciated
Peppy a big greeting from Chile, I had not been able to find a video of your great group "Balance", extraordinary. Ideal if you have your ballad "Falling in love". I take this opportunity to ask your permission to publish this video of "Breaking Away" on my channel.
Hey Ray like me Bob lost his hair. I guess too much testosterone. Lol He used to wear a wig and hated it so I encouraged him go Bald. It suits Him and he’s been much happier. All the best. Peppy
Thanks peppy for this rare footage. I have both balance and the wiggy bits album in my collection. In for the count is my favorite. The wiggy bits album has some great songs. Especially oh captain and free to ride the wind. Do you have any footage by them? Best from the netherlands.
