Portal 2 editor music

- This is the music that plays while designing a custom test chamber in Portal 2's Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC. I pieced it together from the game files (extracted with GCFScape) using Audacity.
Music by Mike Morasky.

Reminds me of self esteem fund from portal 1.
That was probably intentional.
this makes me feel like I'm sitting in a cubicle with miles of nothingness around me
Interesting imagery.
well said.
It's pretty much what the level editor and the chambers feel like - I feel like if I were to take the camera outside of the boundaries of the level, I would see vast nothingness of a huge facility.
im stealing your idea of infinite rows of cubicles and making it a gmod map hope you dont mind thanks
@@mrkitkat0069 I’ve had that idea for years and I’ve never done much with it.

true
I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!!!! -also squidward
loudward
This is probably the thing of Portal 2 that resembles the atmopshere of Portal 1 most.
White walls, white floor, observation rooms watching me, dim white lights, as far as you can see, you try to walk to the wall but no matter how much you walk you can never get there, your alone, but you can feel someone watching over you. No sight of anyone.
I always come back to this soundtrack once every couple of months. Even though the sounds are seemingly played at random they still make up my favorite soundtrack from any game, period. I just love ambiance so much and the only real reason I spend so much time in the portal editor is because the music is so captivating.
Most of the loud sounds aren't random, they play whenever you tweak the chamber in the editor.
i read a comment that said they are all random sounds played at random times
@@mrkitkat0069 The pieces of sound that make up the music are, from what I can tell, randomly selected. There are bits of music in this video that I don't think play at all (for whatever reason, they're disabled), but I included them in my edit here because they exist in the files.
To me, it reminds me 'Invisible Connections' by Vangelis. ;)
The intersting thing with this editor music is that it is entierly random & procedural and not actually 'composed': when you decompress the archive in the game's files, you can find 43 cues labeled 'p2_editor_blips_x' that are dynamically sampled when you load up the map editor.
That's how I made this video, was that folder.
siren on 2:14 is totally perfect

Great video! I really enjoy listening to this in-game, and sometimes even, I'll just let this sit and play. Also, I love the Daring Do profile pic!
Thanks! Here's the video on my Steam profile if you're interested: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=267406307
this sounds like if i was just vibin outside of the universe with it looking kinda like the void from boneworks
edit: ive changed my mind, it sounds like a sort of blank endless room that looks like a stage and the room is shaped like a sphere, with spotlights aiming towards the platform and several windows and other lights that are dimmer
That second story sounds an awful lot like Aperture Science, actually.
@@dogman15 yeah what im saying is the vr thingy that valve made, i think it was like a setup tutorial and it took place in a giant room like that, the soundtrack was similar too
didnt expect somebody to be talking about boneworks here lol man of culture

Thanks for uploading! I just love when this plays in the background. It makes you feel empty and alone, it is really meditative and sad to be completely honest. Thanks!
+Focus You're welcome! And thank *you* for enjoying it.
+Dogman15 Hey can I ask, do you still have the raw sound file to this? I'd love to have it on mah phone :)
+Focus If you have Portal 2 installed on your computer, the sound files I used here can be found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Portal 2\portal2_dlc2\pak01_dir.vpk\sound\ui\. You need GCFScape to open VPK files/folders.
Ohh. Awesome. Thanks for letting me know *starts converting game files*
+Focus I know this is a really late reply, but did you want an MP3 of my arrangement here? (These are lots of little files pieced together.) Because with the little files in your game folders, you can make your own arrangement at the highest possible quality.
Brings back the feeling of finding portal 1 in my library and finally trying it
And how far have you gotten?
Dogman15 I beat it the same day it was like 2012 or 13 idk but when i beat it i was like that’s it? And then I found 2 and spent the next month beating that. It ended way too soon I with there was a 3.
Did you beat the co-op mode? Did you do the co-op "Art Therapy" DLC courses (free)? Have you tried user-made puzzles on the Steam workshop? Have you tried making your own puzzles in the editor shown here? Both Portal 1 and Portal 2 have challenges, where you try to complete a puzzle with the fewest amount of portals, the shortest time, or (in Portal 1 only) the fewest number of steps. Portal 2 has leaderboards ranking you with your Steam friends on these. If you try no other workshop puzzles, I recommend the Gelocity time trial and race courses for both single and multiplayer. Lots of propulsion gel and other stuff for fast fun.
If you would like more information or links, please ask me.

this remember more for me, portal 1 than portal 2
I'm not sure what you're trying to say.
after playing the game, it makes you realize exactly how creepy this is 0.o
What a coincidence that you would comment on this today; Portal 2 is 75% off right now as part of the Steam Hardware Weekend Sale. store.steampowered.com/sale/steamhardwareaccessories/

I think so to.This music is very calm down,
1:46 best blip
this is the music i hear every time i open the hammer editor
announcer: this substence of a vibrations through the air as called music has feeling of: lonelyness, anxiety, calmness, depresion and fear
you may proceed in caution that you'll get one of the
diagnosis, unless you are a robot or already suicidal person.
by the way this test chaiber is about lieing down on the floor and staying there for 4 hours until you eventuelly have depresion, anxiety ect. if you want to skip this test just go to your left in the elevator hall, you did not turned left proceed to the center of the room or you can escape by the chamber lock so you cloud skip the test this you last chance, good... you did not skip the test now you will lay on the floor until your soul leaves body *annoucer voice stopped*
me ded on the groud: huh this test sucks

what
That low base is so calm
What's funny is that both "base" and "bass" work here, depending on how you interpret it.
This gives me extreme Wii/Sega Dreamcast vibes
"they say you can still hear the screams"
I can hear the error sound rn
This is extremely similar to the UI music on the Steam Link. The physical one, not the apps or anything. I'd even say music in this relaxing sci fi style is more of a default music for steam in general considering how similar this is to the steam link music
I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Morasky also composed for the Steam Link.
There's one upload of steam link music with 300 views on youtube, is it the right one?
i'm gonna create a test chamber
idk why but it feels a bit like Watch dogs 2 or watch dogs 1/Bad blood, like the general theme somehow is the same
feels like the first sound you hear in the intro of wd2 at the ctos center, what sounds like some aircon being overclocked to oblivion
gives me steam big picture vibes.
Maybe Mike Morasky did the sound design for Big Picture, too.
@@dogman15 possibly.
anyone else gets an Aphex Twin ambient vibe from this?
it feels creepy
Sounds like its from Qube
Looks like portal 3
**i know portal 3 will be never made**
How does this video look like Portal 3?
just the music sounds like something to portal 3 to me
Have you tried out the puzzle maker yourself?
uhh yea
This gives me creeps
In game, the "creepy" tracks aren't used.
fallgate music
this song is soothing, but creepy at the same time
also edit the description its not a dlc anymore
It was originally released as *free* DLC (at least on PC, if not consoles too), and it's still stored in the game files in a folder that has "dlc" in the name, so I think it's apt.
ohhh ok@@dogman15
that was jusst a suggestion anyways you dong have to do it@@dogman15
I want to know where did you found the sound files
/Steam/steamapps/common/Portal 2/portal2_dlc2/pak01_dir.vpk/sound/ui has all of the editor music and other sounds.
/music has all of the Perpetual Testing Initiative test chamber music
/vo has all of Cave Johnson's voice lines for the PTI.
You need GCFScape to open VPK files.
Have you made any puzzles dogman ?
I have! Here they are on my Steam profile, which is also linked from my main channel page. steamcommunity.com/id/dogman15/myworkshopfiles/?appid=620
