This was my first time hearing Lil Durk and I appreciate him letting Stray Kids be Stray Kids and not trying to change them or ask them to do it exclusively in English. I don't understand Korean either and couldn't translate one word of this song but that's the beautiful thing about music, you don't need to speak the same language to feel the emotions projected through this song.
There is a story in this collaboration with Stray Kids. They got No. 1 on Billboard when Lil Durk was there, he didn't know who Stray Kids were, so he asked and researched them and since then he has continued their work. Now he call them my 8 brothers...
Thanks for the honest reaction! Stray kids is a K-pop group, although it's "k-pop" they have heavy edm/hip hop influence in their music, but it will have pop influences too, the k-pop industry usually combines multiple genres. They're 8 members, the part before the 1st chorus was taken by the 4 singers and the part after the 2nd chorus was taken by the 4 rappers.
While I appreciate that you seek different things from music, it’s pretty easy to get stuck on not understanding a language if you’re not used to it. But the second verse written and performed by stray kids roughly translates to - Despite the dissuasion, I go into the water Their mistakes of saying it wouldn't work out for me Now, even then, I focus on my actions The image of me floating on the surface of the water you saw is oil, not foam When a big wave comes, ride on top of it My name will stand higher Ain't nobody can stop talkin' about it It's meaningless because I'm going on my own way anyway Now, I'm just walking The culprit from the past who tried to drown me underwater The hardships that became a drizzle, became an anchor for my will What can I do? (Do) Like a cartoon (as if a cartoon) I found the clue in a high-dimensional reality In my life that was a blank color, that's blue (Yeah) I started to smell a little too like an adult (I saw it) Wiped away my tears after experiencing failure It was my trophy, to keep going (Let's go) I'm confident in the place where we held hands The more times like this, the more I bow my head and calm down Now I’m at the edge A cliff-like railing that I don't want to go back to again We rise more, I like this song Nobody can judge us, go back from There is no failure in this part of the story I've relieved my thirst with blood and sweat Without understanding who they are as a group, it’s easy to just be like… okay, what do they know about what Lil Durk was saying in the chorus? They were an experiment in their company who had to fight to remain together and when they got to start making music, they were given less support and they were not popular. They were maligned for the subject matter they wrote about, for their experimental music, for their looks, for being a failure. They kept writing, working and pushing until they had a massive hit in 2020, and even then, their home country snubbed them or used their popularity for views. But they gained international acclaim, won a show in Korea called Kingdom Legendary War and have put out three billboard #1 albums in the past year, presold 5.13 million on their last album, and they are still humble and kind and appreciative of their fans who support them, while constantly and consistently writing music to touch our hearts. They have this way of putting their journey and the reality of what they do into lyrics when you look at them which turns this song into a poignant victory anthem to me, without any excessive bragging. And while the intro was a bit more poppy, the vocal styling is more of a subtle R&B flavor, to me. I think there’s a good reason Lil Durk resonated with them enough to want this collab.
@@beansx21 you can see how their early videos don’t have nearly the budget as some of their contemporaries in their company, and some of their videos were them walking around or playing in places with an iPhone on a selfie stick and being their genuine goofy, and wonderful selves. I’d highly recommend checking out some of their music, as they write all of it, and it’s had a flair and style of its own since the beginning. Hellevator was their pre-debut song, and God’s Menu is the one that shot them into popularity.
Thank you so much for your honest reaction! Other STAYs (the fandom name of Stray Kids) have done a wonderful job commenting, but I also wanted to add that Stray Kids are almost entirely self-produced - 99% of their discography is written, arranged, composed and or/produced by them - and primarily focus on rap, hip-hop and EDM, in case you’re worried about pop vibes. (Tbh, I was never into k-pop prior because of my association of k-pop with pop, but SKZ (shorthand for Stray Kids) are their own genre.) I really loved this remix because of the care shown in making it practically a new song and the respect shown by Lil Durk in giving them room to show their colors. I hope you can give SKZ a try in the future to see if you like their sound (though no worries if you don’t)! 😄
I do prefer the Stray Kids version better...but im also more familiar with their music and background. Since i dont speak or read Korean i always try to watch the color coded/translation videos first so i can appreciate what they are saying and who's saying it.
Music is all about preferences, I get why you would resonate more to the other versions specially the original one. I appreciate you being honest about it. I honestly didn't expect Lil Durk to allow Stray Kids(SKZ) just do it there way in this remix and I am thankful for that. Stray kids is an amazing group that would really resonates with the message of the song and I feel like they are the best choice to collab with when he is trying to spread his message to everyone. SKZ had to go through a lot before getting to where they are right now and I am so glad that they managed to stay true to their roots and didn't just change to fit on the western music industry just for more people to like them and they are love by many cause of that. As a Stray Kids fan we are glad to help you if you ever want to try listening to their music. They have tons that they produced, write and composed themselves and sometimes work with other producers but their huge discography is mostly them doing it themselves. If you love hip hop Stray kids is definitely the group for you. Just a heads up though they mix a lot of genres in one song which could be weird but for SKZ it still works so well. Also no worries if their sound is not your type like I said Music is about preferences.
I like that their version is different from the original. I feel like a target so many different audience. I appreciate the artist respecting the artist and letting them say truth to their roots.❤️
Thanks for reacting to straykids, glad to know the Stays (straykids fandom) have been respectful and appreciative so far! Can understand your reaction but you should try more of stray kids they have every taste to serve!
You should look into Stray Kids they are a very talented group and they love to experiment with music and I'm not sure how they do it but they change their sound all he time without losing their own unique style. They are not everyone's style especially if you don't like beat switch ups but you should give them a listen because they really are unique and not your typically kpop group.
It's a shame u went into this saying u don't think u will like it without even hearing it lol. I don't understand korean either, but the flow was fire. Looked up the lyrics video and it was even better. This is my favorite out of all 4. Thanks for trying it tho!

That’s amazing and an artist disrespecting another artist work
@@beansx21 disrespecting? I'm not sure what you mean by disrespecting another artists work.

We plan to listen to more from SKZ! We live their backstory 🥹❤️
Stray kids received VMA Best kpop award too . They're so talented and do whatever they want in their songs , there's no pacific genre or something.

Burnaboy version for me is best!!
I am going to have to agree with you and be dragged by everybody else🤣
