I think the keeping/getting rid of one's accent can also depend on whether it's English or a non-English language too. Since English is basically the international language of the world now, having an accent in it that is not one from an English speaking country is perceived and treated differently than having a certain accent in any other language out there. I get both perspectives though for any language like the identity part makes sense but correct pronunciation for certain languages is also important as it gives respect to that language as well. A little accent that gives away that one is a non-native speaker is obviously permissible as native accents can be difficult to achieve for non-native speakers, especially depending on the language. Accent can also be distinguished from pronunciation.

I agree with you on that. Of course, I try my best to make my pronunciation, if not correct, then at least as close as possible to the correct pronunciation, as I want to avoid situations where I am misunderstood. However, it is not my aim to get rid of my accent, as I don't mind others 'hearing' that I am Polish/ Slavic. I myself find many accents in English endearing, such as French or Spanish. In general, I think that English as a lingua franca is not owned by so-called native speakers of English. And since different accents from the UK or the USA are just as valid, so is an Indian accent, a Slavic accent, a French accent, a Spanish accent, a Japanese accent etc.

I live in Louisiana & native speakers here have a ton of different accents 🤣 I love Slavic accents ❤ Brazilian accents are SO GOOD OMG 🔥 Indian accents are good & very underrated. So what I think is it doesn't have anything to do with your identity, because I once listened to a foreign person speaking in my language and his accent is 100% native all that came to my mind in that moment is that " he speaks fluently my language" and I felt like he really loves my language that he speaks it perfectly with the language's native accent so it also reflects love.
