Those turned out pretty nice. Have only forged the one pair so far, myself (still pretty new to the craft), but I've used them to make other things. So satisfying!
Good work indeed. What temperature did you heat that steel to forge without destroying its carbon content? What temperature is forging done compared to curie temp?
Colin, A great video. The camera position was well thought out and the lighting is great. Thank you for speeding up the time consuming drawing out of the reins (handles…). I would like to propose a new title for your video, "No Tong Tongs", say it out loud, it just rolls off the tongue, and it's fun say, No Tong Tongs… That is what I call it when I make tongs without tongs. I use 3/8" x 1" x 24" flat bar. I take advantage of fullering which is more efficient than just hammering. I do not have a power hammer. I do not have a video of this but it's relatively easy to imagine my method. I mark the bar at 2", 4", and 12". The 12" mark is of course the mark between the two sides. At the 2" mark, I fuller 1/2 the way through the 1" side of the bar (this will be the jaw), I flip the bar and at the 4" mark, I fuller 1/2 the way through the 1" side of the bar. Now the bar has two fullers, one on each side of the bar. The space between the two fullers is the sectional area (joint) for the Rivet. At the first section, twist the jaw 90 degrees. Now do that to the other end, exactly the same. There is no right or left side and both should look exactly the same. Now all that remains is to draw out the reins (handles). I fuller the reins about every two inches to quicken up the drawing out as I do it all by hand. Then you either punch or drill the rivet hole. Another difference is I put several layers of brown paper bag in the rivet joint before inserting the rivet to ensure the rivet doesn't get too tight. The paper burns off as the rivet is pounded down. If you are interested in some of the stuff I do, check out one of my Knife videos… ruclips.net/video/3JCNh4MtItY/видео.html Bruce Jensky
great video! I'm just getting started so I'm trying to understand the geometry of the process of tong making. I have a piece of 5/8" threaded rod I'm going to try this with
I tried to make tongs with rebab. Didn't have tongs or drift yet, so ain't finished yet. Hope they won't break on me. Thanks Colin, for nominating me for the bolt tongs, so not in this for the win (this time). 😉
Colin, Watched all of your videos, and I think they're great! Like the narration, the shot angles, lighting, and the order of demonstration. If I may, consider getting a motorcycle tire, and drilling three equidistant holes to match your tripod legs. This may be sufficient to isolate your camera from the floor and the inherent vibration from hammering. Just a thought! Personally, I would like to see some of your knife work, and perhaps some tools as well, if you are so inclined. Thanks again for your time and efforts! AAR
Phones are amazing now, and if you're already adept at videography with a phone, you'll do great with better equipment. Lot's of people use their phones as a B camera, and use the footage as need arises. As to vibrations, you could also use a piece of soft foam topped by a piece of higher density foam, or even better, some of that memory foam from an abandoned/trashed bed. Just make sure it's stable and your rig doesn't topple over! Albert
Awesome video! Can that be drawn out by hammer? I don't have a power hammer! But I like how you did these! Plz let me know! Im just basically a beginner but I have the basics
my sweetness everything that can be done on the power hammer can be done by hand. It just may take longer. When I first started out I did everything without a power hammer.
..Another Nice set of tongs Colin !! Here's a question. Should the jaws on a pair of Flat Jaw Tongs grip the work the entire length of the material to be held or just a bit at the tip of them??...
Ol James scientifically, surface area does not affect friction (grip strength in our case). I usually don't have it go all the way. That also helps the tongs be a little easier to hot fit to different sizes. I saw a bunch of sets of champion tongs a while back that were made in the same fashion.
I still watch your videos but would really like to see some new ones,I'm fairly sure you have a life and probably don't have the time to make new ones but I can tell you that your videos are sorely missed!
You know I've been wondering why you couldn't make a pair of thongs with round bar, you just did it, so I guess you can. Make perfect sense, but up till now, I've only seen square bar being used. Thanks for the informative video. I bought my first set of thongs, just so I wouldn't have to try to make thongs without thongs. Thanks again!
Im actually thinking slotted cause im trying to complicate a perfectly good katana and turn it into the legendary Zulfiqar but this was useful information even inspired me to build a water wheel powered hydraulic power hammer may be just a lil slower but hammering away all day then going back to it all medieval isn't the greatest progress either lol
How to Forge Square Tongs Without Tongs BUT A SUPER POWER HAMMER ...LOL
Exactly
This is exactly what I needed

Nice result and not to complicated. I need to try this method to improve my abi
Thank you! I love watching blacksmith tutorials. You just popped up on my feed and I subscribed. Loving your style!
Another great video. I too was wondering how you would manage the rivet.
I am Just getting started and am learning so much, thanks for putting these techniques out there for us to learn!
put me in for the tong give away. Thanks. Great lesson.
Colin,

U make it look to easy

Those are really nice and if I don't win these I will definitely use this video to make me a pair.
I was just about forging this kind of tongs, then i discovered this video, you are awesome!
Great idea, especially when just starting out. They turnedout very mice indeed!
Funny. We all have a power hammer. Just need a way to hold things. Lol.
I tried to make tongs with rebab. Didn't have tongs or drift yet, so ain't finished yet. Hope they won't break on me. Thanks Colin, for nominating me for the bolt tongs, so not in this for the win (this time). 😉
Nice build! I'm wondering if you are left handed.
Burt Lade I am left handed

Albert Rasch I'm liking the idea of the vibration isolation. Down the road I would like to get a nicer camera too. Currently this is all with my phone

What steel is that? Mild steel?
RT melt yes, it is mild
Colin Roy when I made my tongs they flex a bit when holding stock and was wondering if i needed to use others steel instead of mild
RT melt they should flex a little. If it’s too much then I’d recommend keeping everything a little thicker or switch to 1045. That’s what I do.
Well done! Can't wait to see what great thing you show us how to make next. :)

@@colinroy9988 ok thanks I guess that was kinda of a stupid question. Happy holidays!
Pretty sure if you've got A power hammer, you've got A set of tongs already
Like the tongs. They would hold Rebar just nice to make knifes with. Just what i need.
I love when people hate on farriers. Just remember some of us farriers are out here making shoes tools and tongs of all kinds.
Pretty good!
nice tongs colin. I saw your channel and subscribed.
New subscriber here. I like the practical kind of instructions, without a lot theatre. Where do you buy your rivets from? Thanks-Jerry
I normally google it and look around from a few different sources and look for the best price. The best one I have found is rivetsonline.com
Nice lookin pair for havin to deal with metal that hot on your hands I know how that feels from copper🔥
Oh, so we don't use a pair of tongs, but a Powerhammer works fine right?
Niels Cremer you’ve got an Armstrong power hammer don’t you?
Wtf dude, I needed to see how to make tongs with no tongs.. how the F do u think I got a power hammer😂
I'm not sure why you didn't just put the rivet in the tongs and put the entire thing in the forge to heat up
..Another Nice set of tongs Colin !! Here's a question. Should the jaws on a pair of Flat Jaw Tongs grip the work the entire length of the material to be held or just a bit at the tip of them??...

..Appreciate it Colin...!!
Ol James CONGRADULATIONS. You won this set of tongs! Send me an email at colinmroy92@gmail.com and I'll get these shipped to you
..Thank You Very Much Colin!! I am Honored to be selected. I sure will put them to good use...!!
I still watch your videos but would really like to see some new ones,I'm fairly sure you have a life and probably don't have the time to make new ones but I can tell you that your videos are sorely missed!
Very interesting
very educational
Nice work ... wish I had a power hammer lol
Forging without tongs, with power hammer :D Nice combination, needless to say.

All that bouncing up and down in the video looks terrible on my 65in tv. Gave me a headache. Nice video but please fix the bouncing!
Parabéns
What are you doing with Cara tongs, return them right this minute Mr.
I'm sorry but i do not know what you are referring to
Im actually thinking slotted cause im trying to complicate a perfectly good katana and turn it into the legendary Zulfiqar but this was useful information even inspired me to build a water wheel powered hydraulic power hammer may be just a lil slower but hammering away all day then going back to it all medieval isn't the greatest progress either lol
So the guy uses a power hammer? 👎
