    Fish curry & rice is a staple meal in most homes in the coastal town of Mangalore. Here is an absolute basic recipe that suits almost all kinds of fish that are popularly eaten in and around Mangalore. This is a fairly easy recipe as it takes less than 25-30 minutes to put together and is a lot healthier than other recipes as oil is very minimally used.
    In this video I have used Arabian Sea Bass. You can use kingfish (surmai), pomfret, sardines, ghol, ladyfish, catfish, babyshark, sole fish, Sultan Ibrahim (rani fish) etc using the same recipe.
    Do adjust the spice level according to your taste. You may add vinegar in addition to the tamarind to balance the flavours.

    Love how authentic and well researched your recipes are! You’ve connected me back to my culture and food heritage! A question - how do you manage to grind your ‘allyan’ into such a fine paste? I can never seem to get it to fine. Any tricks you follow for this?

      Hi Tina! Thank you so much for your lovely words! I am glad that you enjoy my recipes.
      Well, I have a Panasonic grinder - the smallest jar, the chutney jar grinds masalas super fine. I have recommended it to many people. You can find the link to the product on Amazon.in in my description box, do check it out.

    Thanks for the recipe! Can I add coconut milk at the end instead? Or can I substitute grated coconut with dessicated coconut for the masala?

    • @ruchikrandhap
      @ruchikrandhap  6 месяцев назад

      Yes of course! Coconut milk at the end is possible - it will mellow down the colour and flavour of the curry. Desiccated coconut- the taste will change, so use freshly grated coconut if possible

      @@ruchikrandhap i added 2 candlenuts to thicken the masala and fried the masala until it turned a darker shade before adding water. Added lady's fingers and tomatoes. Excellent recipe!

    Ive seen some recipes where the fish is marinated in turmeric and kept aside before being poached....would we need to do that for Manglorean fish curry or will it be too overpowering?

    • @ruchikrandhap
      @ruchikrandhap  4 года назад +2

      Well, if the fish has a very fishy/strong aroma you could marinate it with turmeric for 20 mins, wash off and then add to the curry but this was not really a practice at my place but I know many people who still do it

    Love fish curry. However, the smell of the masala lingers in your breath. I think because the masala is not fried. What do you think ?

    • @ruchikrandhap
      @ruchikrandhap  5 лет назад +1

      Well, in this recipe I have shown an easy method whereby the masala is not fried, however boiling it properly is important to remove the raw smell. Boiling not just helps remove the smell but also helps the gravy to thicken. Seasoning properly with enough oil helps remove the raw taste too

      Hi Merlin, I’m good, thanks! Well, you can try adding some coconut milk to reduce the spiciness. Reduce the heat and bring the curry to a gentle boil
