I think delaying the game was the right choice
I kind of love it when a game gets delayed, it shows the developers put a lot of care and effort into the game compared to those who would rather release a game broken and unfinished

Now that I put some thought into that I think its meant to be directed more toward Halo than Cod or Battlefield mainly because DOOM and Halo at least with the original trilogy have one aspect in common which was the power fantasy, Halo gave that fantasy well after DOOM went silent for quite some time where as before Halo was made DOOM gave that fantasy now you have both fighting for the same goal.

You see, a good friend of mine and his brother we’re staying at my house one weekend, we were watching RUclips when a commercial for doom eternal came on. Me and my good friend both got very excited and hyped up watching the trailer his brother did not quite understand why we like to do them so much he just said that it was nothing but shooting things with heavy-metal playing in the background. I responded back. “What’s not to like about it?”
Demon: "Your nothing but a usurper. A false idol."
Slayer: "Show me your motivation."
Marauder: Your helmet on my head.
I find it interesting how that demon has similar looking armour to the slayer
