Those years with Artie will always be what I liked best. Sal and Richard were coming up with some great bits, the Wack Pack was at their peak, Howard being offensive for the sake of comedy, a funny guest sitting in while Robin did the news.
Howard ruined the show. He developed a mindset where he’d rather be popular than funny. Ironically, today he’s neither. The A-lister speech at Sirius was well after the show’s decline. Kicking myself that I kept my subscriptions until 2020. I guess I didn’t want to accept it was never gonna get better.
@@STWEEKLY Hi, I’m from Chesterfield, lived near Parkway Central. My claim to HSS show fame is I’m the guy who found the Bill O’’Riley “We’ll do it live” video buried in a corner of the internet and sent it to JD. Within 15 minutes, he sent me an email back (which I still have), he thanked me, told me I’m “the man”, and I heard it on the air at the top of the show 30 minutes later. As much as I loved Artie, he’s not blameless in this. He let himself get sucked into a pit of addiction and despair, and he could have gone to rehab before the end. He didn’t because the money was too good and his ego couldn’t handle admitting he’d been living a lie. He didn’t take off. He almost f-ing stabbed himself to death. As much as I hate what Stern allowed himself to become, part of it was a reaction to Artie’s slow (then fast) downward spiral. I say that as a guy who loves Artie, bought his books, went to his shows, and thought he was great. Now, when I see him with the collapsed nose, horrible clothes, and just looking like a junkie, I pity him. God, what might have been if he had only found a way to get help.
It's amazing to me how childish people are. You can't handle change. Howard evolved. He became a well rounded person. You don't like it, don't listen. It's good that you don't subscribe to Sirius anymore. I think it will survive.
@@robnorwood3591 This argument falls flat with me. Everything changes with time, or “evolves”. The stern show of 1984 sounded nothing like the stern show of 1994, and 2007 sounded nothing like 1994. The difference is the show was always a comedy show, on 5 days a week, mostly, with guests that added to the comedy. The show changed radically after Artie left during Sirius contract #2, when it went to 3 days a week and became a promotional vehicle for AGT. It turned into a lame, celebrity oriented, talk show - as per the infamous Pelican Brief speech at Sirius in 2013. That’s not evolution, that’s a format change. I’m glad I stopped paying hundreds of dollars a year to keep Sirius on 3 vehicles and the app. I only wish I had done it sooner. So, to your point, I don’t like it, I don’t listen. But I do feel that I was lied to when the “revolution” I was promised when he came to Sirius turned out to be a lame, 3-days-a-week-if-you’re-lucky, show done from the hosts homes where the big buzz is a Hillary Clinton inter view. My god. How the great have fallen! I’ve seen maybe 5-10 minutes of the show since I quit it. It looks as lame as ever, interview driven, lazy, with a dash of crazy after Howard locked himself up in Florida during COVID. The only news it makes is when he gives softball interviews to Democrat politicians. The most lame thing I’ve ever seen is that Stern finally lands an Interview with Springsteen, now when they’re both in their 70’s, after trying to get him on for years. But then he dumps on his fans and puts it on HBO because his audience is a fraction of a fraction of what it was not only since he was syndicated, but also since his audience walked away from him over the past 15 years. That interview tanked as well, it got zero buzz. Enjoy the show you pay for, my friend. It’s not for me. You;ve got about 18 months of it left. Then Stern isn’t coming back, and he’s promised to destroy his old shows out of spite and because now he’s embarrassed about the humor he put out over the airwaves, and doesn’t want his legacy tarnished by how he really became successful.
As I understand it, Marci gets a lot of the blame, but Howard himself was responsible for watering down the Stern Show. He wanted to change direction a bit and brought in Marci to help facilitate that. I believe Howard thought that the show, as it was, wouldn't work as much with how times were changing. Many of the old staff like to blame Marci because they don't want to think Howard wanted them gone. But it was Howard.
I listen to old shows from the beginning of the Sirius era with Gilbert and Artie and literally piss myself from laughing, and then turn on the show nowadays it’s almost like a twilight zone episode
I’d pay for a fictional subscription called “The Howard Stern Show, -30 years”. That would play the shows M-F from that week around 30 years ago. Say you’d start in ‘89, and it would continue for 20 years until the end of 2009. No need to play the last 15 years. The issue is, I’ve read Stern wants none of his old material around after he dies, he’s going to burn the tapes. Truly. My guess his family will sue anyone distributing bootlegs (you know there are people -Mark’s Frigging- who have every show recorded. I’m assuming he wants the tapesburned because his show from inception until even 2010-11 has lots of racial, sexual, and gay humor that wants stricken. He’s going for a Mark Twain or Lincoln Center award.
It started with Beth introducing him to Hollywood friends and people who grew up listening to Howard taking over Hollywood. He also understandably in his 60s and now 70 changed what he finds funny.
Beth didn’t introduce Howard to anybody. She was a failed actress/model pushing 30 when she married a guy 20 years older than her with a ton of dough. She basically cashed out of having a family in return for a small degree of unearned fame. Stern has/had lots of friends in the comedy world, and in the NYC scene. Including Donald Trump, long before he married Beth . You could make a case that there may have been pressure from her for him to be more mainstream; but ultimately that was Stern’s choice. She has nothing over him, I bet the pre-nup is 50 pages long and entitles her to small payout if they divorce and nothing else; and I bet there’s an NDA in there as well that revokes it if she’d ever say anything derogatory. Golden handcuffs.
I was the biggest Stern fan , listened since Wnbc. He jumped the shark when banned Gilbert Godfrey, something to this day he denies. I would only listen again if they did lie detector segment and he was hooked up and had to answer questions from old school fans like me.
Gilbert got banned for spitting into public muffins.. twice. I was a Gilbert fan to the very end, but we can we please stop blaming PC Howard for Gilbert's actions.
@@bigkahunaburger7782 I remember the cupcakes ,I actually watched it on youtube the other day. If Beetle juice would have done the same thing do you think he would've been banned from the show ?
For a long time Howard could protect the show from “Woke” type people, but it seems like he realized that he could No longer beat them so he joined them. I think Howard would do anything to protect his show from being canceled.
I don't think so because the Artie years were great but in a different way. I think he was rooting for Artie to stay on drugs so hed have a reason to fire him and not look like the bad guy.
