As somebody who has been mocked and bullied for having big, bodily reactions to things (squealing, flapping, spinning) due to my autism and adhd, seeing your reactions always makes me feel really happy and more comfortable in my own expression, because you are never ashamed to react big, "silly" or unusual, regardless of wether it's a positiv or a "negative" reaction

I have a folder of comments that have really meant a lot to me, that I plan to print and put up on a bulletin board once my wife and I get our own house and I can have a dedicated recording area

And to anyone else out there who are told that the way they think or act is wrong… no. Don’t believe that for a second. Do you know why left handed people used to be thought of us less intelligent or less capable? Because they were the minority.
Y’all are beautiful, just the way you are, and I know that sounds cheesy but it’s really true. There is nothing wrong with us. To my fellow ADHD people, and other non-linear thinkers like us, you are not alone. And you are not “wrong”. Your brain is not “broken”. The world just isn’t designed to accommodate us yet. But know that until that happens, you have a safe space in this community.

@@officialmortius Thank you so much for this beautiful sentiment. I’m 55 y/o and very recently discovered that my so-called oddness, the reason why nobody, including me, could accept me, is in part caused by ADHD. There’s definitely also a connection with childhood trauma and high sensitivity. There’s so much pain and judgment to process and my emotions are all over the place.
I felt your reactions to this wonderful performance through the screen and it was heart warming. Please keep doing these videos your way. I appreciate it, so, so much!

@@officialmortius Thank you for saying this. It cannot be stressed enough.
As I mentioned in my earlier comment, I was diagnosed ADHD in the 1970s (then called hyperactivity-the official dx has evolved since), I am also left handed. I have always known things wouldn't be as easy for me as for the next person.
My takeaway has long been basically that since the world was engineered to make it work for right handed folks, I had an edge because I was always adapting to a world that was not made with me in mind. It makes my brain to constantly learn, adapt, and overcome. 😉

Geoff has worked long & hard on this arrangement I think he'd appreciate you being so overwhelmed by it. They all just shine throughout, the harmonies, Layne's beatboxing, Eli's rock God plus matching Rachel & Emoni's incredible notes, Cesar such a pure voice and Geoff just doing everything Geoff does!! Honestly, it's just not possible to break this down in one video. You could spend the entire video simply talking about what Layne is doing in the background, and it would be an interesting video. I couldn't even fully appreciate the harmonies in the last song until I listened to it a few times to wrap my mind around what Geoff and Layne were doing together.

So I’ve been on the VP bandwagon for about a year, but I have never done a deep dive into this Wicked cover. Now I question what I’ve been doing with my musical life. I can’t wait, and I’m holding you to, the blind review of this in a couple of months. The whole piece is awesome, but the dissonant chords leading into Defying and then Rachel singing Defying is some of the best music, vocal or instrumental, that I’ve ever experienced. I mean, that is dumb good.

That little look between Cesar and Geoff around 23:00 on "because I knew you" gets me. I don't know if there is as much meaning behind it as I interpret there to be but to me it feels like them thanking each other for the relatively short amount of time they have been working together, during which there had been SO MUCH great music!!

Thank you for your personal response, as well as your fabulous analysis. I was also a choir/theater kid in high school, and have a lot of positive memories related to those shows and all the relationships built there. Wicked didn't open until several years after I graduated, but I still fell in love with it and was super psyched to see it on tour when it came to Boston a couple of times. I have a personal connection to it, too, though. My older sister was also a theater kid, and we often enjoyed singing duets together at the piano (me playing, both of us singing.) We ended up in different states, but always tried to find some time to sing when we got together as adults. Well, she passed away unexpectedly four years ago. It just so happens that "For Good" was the last song we sang together, so I have a hard time getting through it every time I hear it. So I hear you- not pathetic at all. And I adore that harmony (where Emoni/Glinda takes the lower note) too. :) Super tasty!
And of course, Geoff did an amazing job with the arrangement. I love how so many snippets of other songs are mixed in to the transitions- just delicious! And everyone was perfect in their parts- so many unexpected little moments.
Keep up the great work- I love your insights, and it's also fun to see you melt down when it just gets so fabulous that it's impossible to articulate. I look forward to whatever comes next! :)

So I just stumbled onto your channel and I have to say this was the best reaction I've ever seen to anything, full stop.
A little background, I was a theater kid who now approaching 40 is finally re-entering that world. In the meantime I've worked all sorts of roughneck jobs, oil refinery, car dealerships, military and more and upon listening to this I mirrored your reaction, being immediately transported back to those dressing rooms and green rooms and all the love they contained.
Also, as a man who promotes emotional health in men please never, never apologize for crying. In fact thank you for not censoring our your "breakdown". Everytime a man allows himself to be publicly seen being emotional we all progress. I look forward to digging through your content because if it's half this good we'll get along great.

A little late with my comment but I have to tell you...I have always believed that music and musicians have an incredible ability to make you feel like anything is possible. It can see you through any difficulty. I am a theater geek as well who has suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my adult life. I was bullied and ridiculed for not being "popular" but with my fellow theater kids I was home. It didn't matter what I looked like, what I thought or said, I was accepted.
I feel accepted that way whenever I watch your reactions. Us theater kids have to stick together! Keep doing what you do and always know we appreciate all the tears and the silly moments too.

Mortius, this musical brought me back from a very dark time in my life. I was in the drama and choral program in school too and it made me, like you,
what I am today. I was not a very popular kid for many reasons but this musical and it's songs provided a lifeline to me when I thought that there was
very little left in the world for me. It helped me on a journey of discovery that like you was not "approved" by most people. I was raised in a Christian
household and discovering Paganism made it very very hard to try and relate to everyone else. So yeah, I understand why this made you so emotional.
Never be ashamed of your ability to connect with others through your emotions. What a wonderful world this would be if more people could do that.
Much love too you and yours and Happy Holidays Mortius!

Mortius, I knew a few guys that were going through their own "Self-discovery" in junior high and high school. Being that I was "The popular jock", I fell short a few times, when it came to supporting them as much as I could. But I did do my best to let them know that I wasn't scared to like who or what I did (I'm straight by the way, not that it matters) that everything I did that was "cool" was me just being me and they should do the same, be themselves. I never pretended to understand what they were going through, I just tried to help in any way I could. Never be ashamed for any and all emotions you feel, it's poison to your well being.

My favorite songs from the show weren't included. But "No Good Deed" and "Not That Girl" aren't as enticing as the other songs, so I understand why they got left out. Plus they're on the heavier side, and this is a fun little party. Also, music is meant to make people react. whether that's a smile or a tear, a spin or a flail, any reaction is a proper reaction because it's your genuine response to experiencing a moment of art. You be you and don't change for anyone.

They were in the top three with Home Free and the high school group Vocal Rush. Emoni actually did the Sing Off tour with Voiceplay, so if you look up some of the live concerts you will see her. Finally! I have been obsessively checking to see when you would check this out!
Well, I knew you would be affected but wow! Well, you aren’t the only reactors that this Medley broke!
When you watch again, pay attention to the start of Good News. Cesar starts out with a riff going up and Eli closes the deal with a riff going down. I caught it on maybe my tenth time through. I never would have been listening so carefully if it weren’t for thoughtful reactors like you. ( I will never hear Oogie Boogie again without hearing Eli’s mournful tone that you pointed out. )
I know Acapella is your thing but do yourself a favor and head over to Layne and Tony’s Patty Cake Productions and view some of their Villains Lair. Disney villains playing to get even in the tradition of musical theater. Maleficent and Mother Hotel (from Tangled) are especially noteworthy.
PLEASE do an anniversary analysis - but don’t wait a whole year!

My orchestra teacher from 6th-12th grade always said “music keeps you safe” and it has continued to stick with me almost 10 years later as well. She always talked about how it lifts your soul, brings you friendships, and keeps you doing positive things to stay out of trouble. (She told a story about how she was invited to a party in school where some kids ended up getting into trouble but she couldn’t go because she had a performance the next day) So it keeps you mentally, emotionally, and physically safe.

I agree with you that "Dancing Through Life" never gets enough love - it's such a good song, and in the context of the musical shows the character growth of Fiyero from beginning of, to end of show. The harmonies in "For Good" are my favorite in any musical that I have seen/listened to, and I love that song. Also a high school choir kid/ theatre kid. I was a sophomore the year Wicked hit it big. I discovered it during my first high school play. I was in a very abusive home, and that cast kept me afloat. When the show ended, I felt lost and unmoored. As a person with a disability, I went back to being outcast in the general crush of high school social life. I was very much in a dark place. Wicked kept me alive and so did the friends I made who loved Wicked as much as I did, even outside the cast of that high school show. SO many times I would push myself to persevere... "If Elphaba can survive this, I can too." I did survive. I got to see the Chicago cast of Wicked for my sixteenth birthday, the following summer. I'm still here. I was masking my emotional reaction, until I saw you react so genuinely, Mortius. I had to take a moment too. Thank you for reminding us that one of music's most profound gifts is the ability to help us feel. Thank you for your channel. It brings me joy every time I watch you react.

Edit: it was not a dig or mocking ADD, I have ADHD and this song, for me, is full of 'squirrels', little snippets of so many of the songs that Geoff uses to foreshadow or echo the next or previous section and his overall arrangement touches on so many parts of the musical's score that drive the main storyline, that I'm constantly skipping around in my attention and I hear something new every time I listen. I can appreciate how this has a special place in your heart because it was the score of your emotional development, I can totally relate.

My friend, we knew long before we got to that song in the medley that this was special. No need to apologize. Yes, I know you had to get a break after this one before you could do anything else... which I expect included at least two more rounds of the video. That is the whole point of a song they worked that hard to put so much emotion into. Honestly, I wish they would do one or two of these as a full cover in its own right. Although, if I could, I would ask Geoff to make one of his special takes on For Good... I can only imagine how utterly overwhelming that would be.

Music has the power to transport you to another time and place. I know my comments on their Rich Man video were misunderstood when I started talking about a performance of Fiddler I had seen in Atlanta. It took several viewings before I could stay in the moment and really appreciate their version. But the better the music is, the more power it can have over you. So don’t worry about being touched by the music. That’s one reason I always look forward to your reactions.
I loved Dancing through Life, but had a similar reaction to Wonderful that you did to Dancing. Wonderful is one of my favorites, but a large part of that is the biting satire. I know why Geoff left that out (and had to make cuts or the video would have run an hour), so I’m just glad he made room for that little bit. And if you ever get the chance to see Joel Grey do that song - take it!
Don’t wait a year to go back and listen to it - probably several more times. There are so many good things you couldn’t take in the first time through. Layne’s wonderful percussion. Geoff’s amazing runs and low notes supporting Rachel while she defied gravity. The looks exchanged by Cesar and Geoff during For Good. (Those looks and the longer length of that song tell me that VoicePlay was really feeling the meaning of that song.)
Sorry if I went overboard with my comment. Geoff’s arrangements seem to bring out the emotion lately!

Junior year, the music department's yearly trip was to New York and they got to see Wicked performed on stage. (Due to outside circumstances I was not able to go on that trip.)
Senior year, the choir director had loved the show so much that our big, all year musical piece we did was a Wicked Medley. I recognized all of the lead vocals save for Geoff's "Cause it feels wonderful..." section because of that.
Our senior year music department trip? It included the choir singing said medley at Disneyland.

Forgot I wasn't subbed toyou. I have now corrected that error and wanted to say that I love your reactions because of just how genuine they are. I wanted to hug you when you were getting that emotional. As someone who studied Theater/Drama in Highschool and the little College level I attended I can completely understand how certain things can bring one right back into those moments of the past that helped to form their present self. Don't hold back who you are because of what someone else might think. If you don't express them how will people ever know your true emotions?

Two older Voiceplay videos that would be good to check out is Love on Top with Emoni and Sing which features most if not all previous collaboratiors. Just watch sing with the CC on.

Love your reaction, Mortius -- and I'm curious whether you've checked out the new(ish) reactor David K? He started his channel with a reaction to this medley and I really like his approach. He listens all the way through once and then goes back for a second "analysis" watch. Makes for long videos but I don't think the fans ever mind that 😂 I notice and learn different things with each of my favorite reactors -- and I am always here for your big emotional reactions 🥰
