The german tanks may have been bad at some areas but they are the most beautiful tanks ever made

The Jagdtiger and also the Tiger II (King Tiger) were constructed when the Germans were only in Defense. For defensive situations I think these tanks are the best you could get in this time
And deadly...hitler didn't lie they had wonder weapons.

Gen. Patton admired the German soldiers and their tanks. My dad drove a half track under Patton in WWII. He said Patton wanted to take what was left of the German army and defeat the Russians, but the politicians wouldn't let him do it.

Actual if you carefull read the debats Patton had with Eisenhower regarding more fuel and more bomber planes the answere were. There is no more of either. So no matter of how much Eisenhower would had done the same (I doubt it because no evidence had showend up so far) he could not have done it. Also the russians was exhaused and admit that they had used their reserves to push through at Seelow highs. So either had have any plans for continue the fight after Germans defeat.

It’s sad we didn’t realize just how rare these beautiful machines would later turn out to be and not just turned into scrapped. I’m just happy there were some people smart enough to save some of these pieces of history.

EXCELLENT video! The amount of work to put this together must have been exhausting, you pretty much explained the fate of every Jadgtiger that Porsche and Henschel made. It's sad such magnificent machines had to be designed for war. They would've been great peacekeeping weapons for defense against invasion had Germany chose that route.
With Hitler, that was never an option.
Yes great story ,I personally had the chance to photograph # 331 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds .It is one awesome machine with signs of battle damage ,once again great job!

I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1980, attending the Small Arms Repair Course as a young Marine just out of recruit training. I was assigned to Area Guard one night, and my post was at the Ordnance Museum. After dark I actually climbed up on 331, and a few of the other German tanks.

My grandfather witnessed the fighting in Schwetzingen as a child and told me he remembers 3 German tanks (the Jagdtigers) coming down the rail line from Heidelberg heading to the town square then a few hours later only one of the coming back after the fighting. The surviving JT had a breakdown in the town of Eppelheim and was blown up by its own crew.

I read about that commander who surrendered at the end there in a book called panzer aces he actually saved that town from being destroyed

What a beautiful, elegant jagdpanzer. The Jadgtiger also had the 128mm pak 44..which could penetrate 250mm of armour plate.

I have a Black n White photo of my dad standing on a knocked out Jag Tiger....near the end of the war.. ..probably 1944..he remarked how large it was...He never referred to it as a "Jag Tiger"...he called it a "mobile Gun"...i wish I knew which Number Jag it was...

German armor during WWII is by far the most interesting armor of that period but this is also one of Germany's Achilles heel. Germany had way to many designs and prototypes in production and development for a country by 1942 beginning to fight a defensive war. They would have been better off to focus production (limited resources) on just a few designs rather than so many.
True indeed - had they concentrated on and mass produced the Panther tank from the early stages of the war , the outcome may have been very different on many fronts.
Absolutely mind-bending footage! Very sad to think so many of those machines were just scrapped. But, we must remember the post-war sentiment was to get rid of everything with a Nazi origin to it. I would truly be in awe to stand and see one of these up close. Prayers for all those who fought against them, and all those who fought in them.

Kids really. By the time the JT went to action, older, experienced crew were very rare. Check out Otto Carius, one of the most famous Tiger/JT commanders.

This design was unpopular with the crews. It is the anti-Hetzer, which was popular, and easy to use under war conditions. As with many late-war German designs, it was hugely wasteful of scarce resources and it was ultimately beneficial to the Allied war effort that the Germans wasted so much effort developing this heavy white elephant rather than trying to figure out how to make a few more Panthers.

The porche running gear was cheaper, but the suspension suffered way more presure, some porche suspensions broked or the running gears bent

sad how many of them were scraped. i think a lot of them, maybe all should have been spared that fate and put into a museum.
It was only worth money in the price of metal so many were scrapped.
Museums were the last thing on anyone's mind in 1945......
Less than 100 were made between July 1944 and April 1945. Otto Carrius states that Allied air supremacy, very poor mechanical running gear reliability, and lack of fuel meant that the Jagdtiger never realized it's potential
He also found it to be pointless because the Tiger I could easily do its job.
According to the author of the history of the Nibelungen Werke where the Jagdtiger was built, 5 Jagdtigers were constructed with the 88mm gun. These were blown up in the factory yard at the end of WW2. That puts some doubt as to wether the 88mm Jagdtiger ever saw service.
Have a close look at Jagdtiger 314. It has the Porsche suspension, but NO Zimmeritt!

SCODA who designed all the tracks used on German tracked vehicles never got the ground pressure right till they turned the outside edge of the track plate up like on the mouse! Something that simple made the track float and turn on the braked track much More efficient!

Very interesting footage and good research! Good job! But I must point out the issue regarding the Porsche suspension as it was not putted in production for the following reasons: 1) due to the reduced numbers of wheels and on the same side together with limited suspension travel it created too much loading or stress on the tracks resulting in rapid wear, bending and eventual breakage and worse flotation on soft ground. 2) The design of the bolt-on suspension, very similar to the VVSS system mounted on the Sherman, could suffer shear-force causing the failure of the unit as easily seen on the captured Jagtiger. 3) The track had to be modified by removing the inner guide that reduced the effectiveness of track control and the idler wheel had to be changed! It is just an punctuation!

at 7:08 the 211 has a very thin gun diameter compared to other photos. So I guess it must be one of those fitted with an 88 mm L/71 Gun?
That's probably because the gun is turned and warped by the explosion.
I disagree. I can se no sign of that. However as you mention in the video. They started to use 88 mm gun in november 1944, so it must be pausible to figure out how many there were suited with this gun?
It's not 211 that one is well documented and there were only four Jagdtigers fitted with that gun and there is no pictures of them that I known of.

Overweight, under-powered. Beside these two weakness, it's a hell of AFV.
I read an account of this surrender several years ago where the German commander said a German woman came up to him and spit on him for surrendering.
The guys in the last third of that video with their Jagdtigers parking in Iserlohn sure had some nice commanding officers.
In contrast to most of the other beforementioned Jagdtigers theirs' were not broken down, out of fuel or anything. They seemed to have been fully working and well equipped with numerous weapons and plenty of ammunition, too. But instead of letting his men fight and die an useless death he let them surrender.
Some may think of that as treason but I think putting down such mighty weapons and saving as many lives (germans just like allied lives) as possible makes them real heroes. Even more so if you think what happens to such "traitors" in a totalist regime like fascist germany.
They are from unit 512. They were lucky since a large prtion of them used jagdpanthers or jagdpanzers before.
TFW you continually design larger tank and anti-tank guns that make them completely useless and impractical while your enemy is using WWI-era guns and your PaK40 was actually a very good anti-tank gun already

People overstate the capabilities of this so much just because it had 250mm of frontal armour, any of the thousands of M36 tank destroyers could have punched through that from a kilometre away. The side armour was still only 80mm with very little slope, something all the anti-tank weapons the allies had could penetrate from the 75mm Shermans to PIATs and even Bazookas. They didn't perform well on the rare occasion they got into combat, for all their firepower and frontal armour could be nullified with a smoke-shell that they would be risking a huge amount to just drive forward and out of, they'd only be closing the gap and exposing their side far more.
JagdTiger wasn't much more than any of the thousands of towed anti-tank guns that were all over the place, sure it was much more resistant to the inevitable artillery barrage that allies called down on any anti-tank gun position, but it was a huge expense for not much extra impact.

@@DanielOfRussia The M36 used the 90mm M3 Gun which when loaded with T30E16 HVAP ammunition penetrated 250mm of armour at 1000m.

What were the Germans thinking? That thing's suspension was losing the war before the vehicle even saw battle. The engine needed to twice as powerful, and the transmission 4x as strong.
They really thought the wonder waffe thing would work at some point.
It actually worked. Fight after the steering system reworked in february the reliability of these were very impressive. Don't forget germany is bombed to ashes but the Unit 512 records shows that usually 70% of the panzer stregh were active!

+Boxhawk The first Jagdtiger to be knocked out in combat was by a Bazooka team.
The ONLY ever jagdtiger knocked out was by friendly volkstrum troops. They had never seen a jagdtiger and mistaken it for an American tank.
Oh and most jagdtigers broke down due to mechanical failure. They did see combat on the Western front, in one incidence a column of jagdtigers destroyed 25 American tanks from a range of 1200meters. When the Americans returned fire, the shots simply bounced off of the jagdtigers frontal armour.

say what you want about the German government at the time but the Germans had some of the most awesome and deadly tanks of the time. Only ones aside from Germany with beautiful designs was the Soviets. Mainly T-34 and the IS models, the second being a better KV-2

Love the JT , but in WT it is over ranked. Needs to be 6.3. Big target slow and horrible reload time.
The problem with it in WT is the actual adversaries it faces (which sometimes are quite far from the WW2 age lol) and the maps themselves, usually you don't get a map where long-range battle is required and in the cities it's pretty much suicidal to ride one. Then again, if you move it onto 6.3 it wouldn't make much sense as none of the 5.3/5.7 tanks would ever be able to penetrate it from the front, at any distance, and its gun would annihilate anything in its way too. Honestly i don't think that battle rating is the issue with it, Jagdtiger is itself an issue in WT as most of the times its shells aren't any more effective than Tiger II's and it's also slow and unresponsive AF. Gets its armor humiliated by the British and modern tanks too
@@DanielOfRussia I totally get your point however. let's not forget in ww2 the JT frontal armor was impenetrable. There for tankers need to be crafty and get side shots.
What a gun... but for Nazi-Germany in 1944/45 it was a "waste" of ressources, I mean check out the round of the 128mm gun (even today tanks very very often use the German gun "Rheinmetall 120 mm gun", in most cases there is a license production, sometimes with a few parts coming from European or German factories of Rheinmetall and its (I think?) mother company...
A few 105mm versions (I think as a counterpart to soviet 105mm gun in earlier stage of cold war) was made in prototypes but the fire power was not soooo much superioir to guns with around 85-90 mm... to break first the T-54/55 ("bad" tanks, even ex-crew members said in a interview, that is why it was build soooooooo much but was retired only after very few years... T-62 came, the Rheinmetall gun is not only simple 120 mm... its rounds have some shit (like an arrow) to use the wind resistance a bit and reduce the slowing effect of the wind, sounds like baby crap but even 5 or 7% more power at the target through this method can decide between "heavily damaged, lets get out of this burning shit Its done and will explode if the fire reaches ammo and fuel...!" or "we got hit, heavy damage in that part, but still full operational"
The absolute backbone of the US troops the M1 Abrams uses this Rheinmetall gun too and M1 Abrams is now a b it older already, but the Leopoard 2 is too, that is why there are already the 7th Generation (Leopard 2A4 = 4th, 2A6 = 6th, 2A7 = I think this are special tanks on the Leopard 2 chassis, tanks to all kind of missions, some to rescque other leopards which were hit and can't drive, they have equipment on the strong chassis to pull another leopard2 and entering over 100 tons by that I think, so it is a slow drive, giving full power all the time would be possible but lead to a consumption of over 500 liter diesel per 100 kilometers or so, and Diesel is already stronger or engine is much more ffective, so it would be over 600 liter gasoline compared, also like nazi-german tanks of the ultra-heavy types, I ask my self how much the worldwide "Military Jet fuel" production and demand was increasing, new models are more effective too, but China and India for example are building laaaaaaaaaaaarge numbers of aircraft, new world order^^
Any one know how many combined kills the JTs had ?
Not that much , there were only a few 100 produced at a time when Germany was definitively loosing the war and it could not have any significant impact on anything. Furthermore, it also suffered from frequent breakdowns, which it would spent time in repair or being abandoned without having done anything.
There is a record of one Jagdtiger knocking out 6 Sherman tanks, but this is also contradicted by the facts that the Jagdtiger was probably already stuck and the Sturmgeschütz IIIs, supporting the Jagdtiger from 512 s. Pz. Jäg. Abt. had destroyed the tanks.
