The 25pdr was a superb field gun for its day. The Sexton was inspired by the American M7 105mm self propelled gun, which the British nicknamed the Priest because its machine gun cupola allegedly resembled a pulpit. In keeping with this, they named the Sexton after another kind of church official. I suppose they had to call it something!

You have to chuckle when you see the gunners fill up the shell rack, and then proceed to use the conical tops of the shells to stack more shells onto. You can carry twice the ammo the specifications says you can!
So many vehicles from the 7th Armoured. Rare was the break the Desert Rats got from the front lines. Fighting the war from Belgium to Hamburg, took a bit of doing but they got there!

The amount of self propelled artillery of the allied forces was overwhelming. The Germans where bombed and shelled to pieces. What where they thinking?

Good question! Here's my answer, for what it's worth...
The Germans had started the war in Sept. 1939 & invaded Russia in June 1941, so they had fully committed themselves to total war more long before the U.S.A. brought 100% of its massive industrial capacity to bear against Germany, Italy & Japan.
Prior to the U.S.A. joining the fight, the Brits & its Commonwealth allies were constructing large amounts of equipment, including towed artillery & self-propelled artillery...and they certainly were quite adept at using artillery. Nevertheless, it wasn't until Dec. 1941 that U.S.A. fully dedicated its economy to the war effort, and soon began to manufacture incredible amounts of war machinery using existing & new factories as well as a giant workforce...and did so from the relative safety of North America. Consequently, once the U.S.A. entered the war, the western Allies as a whole never stopped out-producing a German war machine that was operating at full-tilt.
Of course, by the end of 1941, the Soviets had reacted to Germany's unprovoked & unexpected invasion, stopped the Germans at the gates of Moscow, and also completed the amazing feat of moving most of their heavy machinery, factories & logistics to a safe distance from the Germans (..well east of the Volga & beyond the Urals..) By the time 1942 rolled around, the Soviets were beginning to produce tanks, artillery, trucks, aircraft & munitions at a rate that was many times Germany's best industrial output (**).
The Soviet's ability to manufacture many times more than German industry was not anticipated by Hitler & his inner circle, and by the time the U.S.A. joined the fight, the Eastern Front had become a black hole that swallowed up German men & machine at an alarming rate (*). While German industry couldn't keep up with the Soviets, Germany's industrial output did continue to increase in 1942 and 1943, however, with the western Allies' strategic bombing campaign peaking in 1943 an 1944, and German industry relying more & more on slave labour, the quality of German equipment began to suffer & Germany could increase increase its output no further. Ultimately, the industrial might of the U.S.A. & Soviet Union totally eclipsed the Germans resulting in...as you said so well...the Germans being bombed & shelled to pieces by Allied air power and by artillery which also benefitted greatly from the Allies' control of the skies over Europe.
What were they thinking? Hitler & his inner circle had totally under-estimated the collective willpower, effort, strategic focus & incredible industrial strength of Germany's enemies.
(*) FYI, between between 80 & 90 percent of all German casualties & losses of equipment occurred on the Eastern Front. Even today, many people in 'the West' do not fully comprehend the incredible scale of the conflict between Germany & the Soviet Union, nor have many in 'the West' wrapped their heads around the amount suffering experienced by civilians & soldiers. This does not diminish the incredible suffering, sacrifice & accomplishments of the Western Allies, but those in 'the West' should not let their highly justified dislike of Stalin's reign & Putin's Russian Federation get in the way of remembering that that - because of Hitler's aggression - the Soviet Union suffered between 40 and 60 million dead men, women & children in the span of 4 years, and yet managed to transition from a rather backwards agriculturally-based economy to one of the two two remaining superpowers by the end of WWII.
      ,
(**) BTW, while the western Allies' Lend-Lease assistance to the Soviet Union was helpful on a practical level & a definite boost for Soviet morale, it does need to be kept in perspective. The total amount of equipment donated to the Soviets during WWII represented only 4% of the total amount of equipment manufactured by the Soviet Union during that period of time. Yes, some of the western equipment proved especially valuable...initially fighter aircraft & some manufacturing equipment the Soviets, then most notably, thousands of extremely durable trucks. Not only did these trucks become favourites because of their reliability & ease of maintenance, but the helped keep most of Soviets' advancing troops supplied & reinforced, which enabled the Soviets to maintain the strategic initiative push the German army & air force all the way back to Berlin. However, perspective must be maintained, i.e. anyone who claims that the western allies won the war for the Soviets is sadly mistaken!
