- I was traveling back home from my Iowa #salvage #automobile #gas road trip adventure and received a phone call about a possible collection of vintage gas pumps, signs, and other automotive related antiques that might be available. This was located in the hot California desert area. #abandoned #classicvehicles #mechanic
When I was in high school I worked at a Beeline station that became a Husky station. I remember Stinker stations that became Maverick stations. Gas was 36 cents a gallon and every customer got their windshield cleaned, oil check if they requested it and air pressure check in the tires. Cash or credit card paid to the attendant. Nowadays I don't see anything but the gas pump and follow it's instructions, pump my gas, clean my windshield and leave. I wish the gas pump would ar least say HI!

Real life memories are precious and important both recognizing how things were in the past and comparing it to what we have now. I worked in a full service gas station myself growing up. Today's motorists only fuel up and buy unnecessary junk food and drinks for the most part at gas stations. The automobile is neglected until it goes into a shop for routine maintenance . Tire pressure checks, and fluid checks are almost non existent between service appointments. Yes maybe that modern gas pump should say Hi and don't forget to check your fluid levels and tires!!!!

You certainly found a nice collection of gas pumps and signs all at one location. I find it interesting than when someone purchased gas from these older pumps, the maximum total sale that the pump would calculate was $9.99. Some cars back then might have had a gas tank capacity of 20 gallons, so when they were manufacturing these pumps, they probably thought that the price for a gallon of gas would never exceed 50 cents.
Back when I got my driver's license in 1970, I could get gas in Maryland for 29 cents per gallon. Back then, I could fill up my 1957 Chevy for $5 or less. They also pumped the gas for you, cleaned the windshield, and asked about checking the oil.

What a fantastic comment you wrote!!!! I think about this myself often when looking at these old pump calculators . Good old days of yesteryear gone forever. I worked at a couple of old stations growing up - I was one of the guys cleaning the windshield and checking tire pressures/ oil level . 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸⛽️⛽️⛽️

Thanks Anthony. Buying an entire collection like this was unexpected and very exciting. The phone call was based off an old wanted gas pumps business card I handed to the owner of this collection at a swap meet in the 1990s.
I’m partial to lease signs but that Desert Laundry has got some great graphics! …. Great score … that Texaco Wayne is a nice piece as well ….

When I see these old gas pumps, especially fully restored ones, are the pump signs the original ones, or reproductions? I figured you would be the authority on that one, Rob.
@@susanstamboulian646 I have seen restored pumps with original pump signs but not often. Most of the restored pumps have reproduction signs, globes , and decals. Thank you for asking and for showing an interest . Rob
