    When Simon renovated the mall in 1998, it was at its prime. The mall started to go downhill around 2014.

    Dan Bell was right. Malls all have the same 3 problems.... Sears, Penny's, Macy's.

      Or in the case of the Diamond Run mall, Sears, Penny's and Kmart, which is even worse.

    This mall was my childhood. I miss the good old days of this mall with all of my heart. Both of my parents worked at this mall in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I remember the two theaters. The indoor and outdoor one. The arcade. Woolworths. Scottos pizza. Diamonds restaurant. I remember the lack of lighting. The red carpet on the floor. The potted plants and bench plastic seating.

      Every mall also must have dead staple GNC and Vitamin World Zale's, Kay, Sears Penny's K-mart. and you must throw in a Goodwill and a couple of churches to finish off the mall. These are all staples f a dead mall

    Richmond Town Square almost died in the mid-1990s, before the renovations. I remember it being a very dark mall. I also remember that they had a bar/nightclub in the food court area. Blue Oyster Cult actually played there in the 90s.
    The problem is that the Cleveland area had too many malls. The area really hasn't grown much since the 60s. Today, the ones that do well are the big ones (Great Northern, South Park, Great Lakes) as well as Beachwood Place (the upscale mall with the local Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue). Tower City Center has hung on for only one reason: it's the downtown transit hub.
    Legacy Village and Crocker Park, the local "lifestyle centers", have done just fine, for the most part.

    • @starwhisper7869
      @starwhisper7869 6 лет назад +1

      Even Great Lakes though, isn't as strong/busy as it used to be. Even after they updated it a few years ago. My parents say there's closed stores in there.

    Another great video. Amazing the mall is clinging to life with a "junior anchor" (Regal Cinemas) and a collection of stores that hold on in dead malls (Bath and Body Works, GNC, Kay Jewelers, Foot Locker and, formerly, Radio Shack.) Look forward to your take on Euclid Mall (WallieB's was great too)

    The escalators are not the same location for the upstairs. The escalators used to go up in the direction of the food court (before there was a food court. Macy's wing didn't exist, that was where the funky main entrance was. There used to be a shoe store on the second floor I swear that's where Al Bundy worked and called women fat.

GNC closed a while ago and moved down south, Bath and Body Works just closed down last week. and the Planet Fitness that just opened is not making it any better or worse since again, Bath and Body works and a lot of other stores either closed down or moved south.
    Update: Just announced, Carson's, one of the two remaining anchors is set to close.

    New retail development is to begin on the Macy's building next month, the building was purchased for 2 million a few months back, plus a golden corral is scheduled to be constructed this fall in the outer parcel of Macy's by the same investor, this mall still has a chance! Still some decent stores to shop up there and it's safe! Unlike the Beachwood mall down the street.

    Awesome content as usual if you're able to come about an hour and a half past Cleveland you should check out Findlay Village Mall it was a thriving mall for my childhood wasn't dying until someone recently it lost Kmart as an anchor years ago, but replaced it with Best Buy but I think that is gone now too along with JCPenney and maybe Sears? I'll have to look into it, but it is definitely dying and it's not a small Mall but not huge. Also on the other end if you're in Findlay you'd only be 45 minutes from Toledo and you can check out Franklin Park Mall it has bucked all trends and is huge, I think it has like 5 anchors and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the biggest mall in Ohio well over a hundred stores!

    I would try to get a grocery chain and pharmacy chain to feel the anchor spaces. Turn it into a enclosed city center. Post Office and satellite courthouse for tags and licenses. Restaurants and a Movie theater. I see so much potential in spaces like this the main issue I keep seeing is the debt load these properties carry and the physical condition the end up being in. Sometimes these properties haven't been properly taken care of in decades and the remodel and repair cost make it more economical to tear down and start over.

      Richmond Heights isn't a bad area. Nearby Euclid, where Euclid Square Mall was, has been declining for years.
      The main problem is that the Cleveland area is stagnant popluation-wise, and the area was overbuilt with malls in the 60s and 70s. Parmatown, Westgate, Severance (all built around that time) have closed or repurposed since about 2000.

    it's a shame these types of videos weren't a thing prior to the renovation. it was oozing with vintage aesthetics back then. the carpets had fat stripes of purples, mauves, and reds. the `couches` were hard, one piece, and the seat parts were scooped out so to speak. there was no food court, but there was a restaurant with nice wood paneling. a NARC arcade machine was in the center area where the stairs to the second floor were, and there was also a nice lil arcade at the end of one wing. i later worked at the babbage's/gamestop, which seems to have closed prior to these types of videos. the renovation did help for a while but obviously not in the long run.

    Many big trends of bad economics occurring for middle class and poor. For example, lots of indicators things are getting bad, such as numerous homelessness all over USA, dying malls, underemployment, and the Federal parks are not really maintained, nor watched closely. But, the court systems of USA seem to be targeting the poor, and those who are getting divorced, or accused of not being good parents. Very strange stuff going on in USA.

    Worked there for six years at their GameStop (which I think is gone). The mall renovation started well. Lot of major chain stores and good foot traffic. Crime, fights, and other issues took over quickly. I remember one night there being a sixty plus person fight in the food court. Drug sniffing dogs the became the norm on the weekends and you’d see people sprinting to get out. I remember seeing one grab his kid and bolt out of a service entrance. I live about six miles away in a different city now and haven’t been back in ten years. Always wondered what it looked like on the inside now. Thanks for the video!

    Another DEAD Ohio mall? There is a little mall in Gastonia NC that has lost 2 of its 4 anchors and maybe 30% of the stores on the lower level are gone. Only 2 food places left in the food court. I was in there a week or so ago and the Subway owners were taking down their signs and a couple of us were talking to the guy asking when they closed. It has been about 2 weeks. Sears was the first one to go and JC Penny left last fall. Sears won't make it much longer. That is going to kill more of these malls.

      the advent of online shopping has done a lot to cripple mall traffic, yes. but I'd consider that an inevitability.
      the real issue has been the lack of foresight in the developing and remodeling of these malls decades ago, and an overall inability to adjust to the changing times.
      shady investors and sinking anchor retailers has also done more than a fair share of damage

    Serious question - so where do 12-18 year old kids go to loiter / hang out these days?
    In the glorious late 80s this Mall was incredible (from a 9 year old perspective). Amazing arcade, [Scotto's] pizza shops, Spencer Gifts for all your blacklight poster needs, and a secret '2nd level' with nothing but weird stores and crevices to explore. And it for some reason had a mini open air library which no one really appreciated. The older version had dank Corporate Art installations in the front of each hall that included these giant red tubes you could 'yell into'.

    A bit of irony and/or karma...Richmond Town Square lured Macy's away from Euclid Square Mall, built a new store for them, and pretty much helped put Euclid Square out of business ( not that it was thriving). Now it's RTS's turn...I'm sure the management of the mall has probably changed more than once since then, but one suburb stole revenue from a neighboring one, and now Richmond Heights is in the same predicament it put the City of Euclid in years ago.

    • @BoratWanksta
      @BoratWanksta 6 лет назад +2

      At least Hawthorn Center is in better shape, than most Chicago area malls. You are right it has had some closures inside in recent years, such as GameStop and FYE though. Though all malls are battling in some way, to stay alive. And at least Hawthorn has made some good moves, such as getting a new AMC theater directly connected to that mall to open up(if only that wing would fill up with more stores, or at least attract a big box store to fill tons of that vacant space), and ditto with Dave and Buster's. And unlike other malls, I bet there's a chance that they might just succeed getting something to replace Sears, whenever that company announces that store's closure down the road(to my knowledge, I still have heard NO announcement of its closure). If you think Hawthorn is bad, try visiting a different mall that is more greatly struggling with occupancy, such as Regency Mall in Racine, WI, River Oaks Center in Calumet City, IL, or The Orchards Mall in Benton Harbor, MI. Also, I'd still say Hawthorn is in better shape than say like Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, IL, which is up to 2 anchor vacancies and will soon have a 3rd once Sears closes later in 2018.

      Yeah, I know what you mean about the jewelry stores closing. Though it seems like jewelry stores in malls are very slowly having a harder time everywhere, in hanging on.

    The area went to shit in the 90's when white flight was just about over with, and the blacks came in. This isn't me trying to be racist, but the cost of housing in the area tanked, and the 2007 housing market drop didn't help much either. They also had other mall competition with North Randall/Rolling Acres (even though that was Akron/Canton)/Euclid Square/Great Northern/Beachwood Place. Beachwood place is primarily the reason why the other malls in the cleveland area died. The mall has been open since the 70's and still has all of its original anchors to this day...and get this, they are companies that haven't failed. Saks, Dillard's, and Nordstrom's.

  • @Jhihmoac
    @Jhihmoac 6 лет назад

    ...Once the anchors are gone, these places empty out pretty fast... Not enough draw without the anchor stores... Usually they're the first thing potential customers look for when they drive by... Not worth a second glance otherwise... Online shopping is slowly killing the days of the "mighty malls"...

    Malls should be catering more to smaller businesses than bigger ones, this seems like a bad strategy but retailers that can just buy their own floorspace anyway will always hold that over the Mall's heads not to mention internet sales. Malls used to be bastions for major retailers, but I think if dying Malls have a future they will focus on occupancy over sheer profit.

    If you live in a town with a dying mall, it means the surrounding community is dying. High paying jobs are gone, now the lower paying jobs go, then people move out, no one buys, so they rent, rents drop, lower classes of non working people move in, welfare, followed by a slum. It's a bleak picture, but it is the truth.

    • @fixpacifica
      @fixpacifica 6 лет назад +1

      That's not at all true. There are plenty of malls going out of business in prosperous areas. For example, I will point out the Vallco Mall, which is within walking distance of Apple's two main campuses in Silicon Valley.

    • @jtstacey83
      @jtstacey83 6 лет назад

      The current owners were pushing to make it a mix use facility with housing, offices, and retail, but were voted down by residents who wanted to keep it solely retail. Other factors are in play on this one. The area is thriving but many basic economic factors are completely out of wack. You've got people in the area making six figures living in cars and in parking lots because of housing and rent prices being insane. Almost no lower middle or hell upper middle income family can afford to live in the area and they basically live in the surrounding communities and commute into work.

    • @BoratWanksta
      @BoratWanksta 6 лет назад

      @fixpacifica I'd add Charlestowne Mall in Saint Charles, IL(erm now called The Quad, but noone ever calls it that), as another example of what you mean by dying mall in a very prosperous area. Correct, dead malls aren't only limited to poor and declining areas. Never mind that mall closed to the public(except its anchors an 18 screen Classic Cinemas movie theater, Von Maur, and Carson's(now closing due to Bon-Ton's companywide liquidation)), as of November 30, 2017.
