2008 Malibu VLX Boat upgrade from Monsoon 340 to 383! Major torque gains for wake surfing!

  • Our Monsoon 340 was using a lot of oil. We decided if we were going to swap out the motor, let's put some improvement to it. We upgraded to a sbc 383 stroker using same cam grind and heads. The torque is amazing. We go over everything it takes to pull this off, plus what it's going to cost you. If you have an older Malibu wakestter or any kind of boat using a Small block Chevy engine, you're going to want to watch this.

    I have the 383 Hammerhead in my 2008 23LSV. I suggest looking at FAE system. For me it was absolutely necessary. No more fumes from the 383 and quieter. Much better for the kids.

    I’m with you, I would rather have a personalized tricked out boat while saving money on a nice used model. Thanks for sharing these videos, they helped us with our 07’ VLX.

    Great video! I have. 2008 which I’m sure will need some TLC soon if not already. This video and your upholstery vid.did a great job of breaking down real world cost / expectations. Thanks!

    Awesome build on your 08 VLX Billy! Sammy is killing it on the back of the boat brushing up her skills early this summer. I bet you all have been waiting patiently for it to be completed and back in the water.
    Giving me ideas when my 08 VTX with the 340 Monsoon engine is ready for a swap. Yes it's great when our boats are paid off. All we do is just keep upgrading. Still way good looking boats and bigger savings on the pocket book.
    Are you planning in the future installing FAE exhaust? Surf tabs? I'm using suction gates and like you love the waves they produce.
    Keep up the great videos. My wife and I love all the different content. Boats, boots, cowboy hats, classic cars, salt water reef tanks, etc.
    Keep Making America Great Again with your video content!

    You have to have the cleanest '08 Malibu I've seen. You take such immaculate care of your boat. I'm a believer myself in taking care of your things, and making them last. I own a 2014 VLX that I plan to keep for a long time and I baby her as much as I can. Glad to see you making some new content with the Malibu. Hope the new 383 provide you many more years of enjoyment on the water with the family.
    One last question, what prop are you running?

    I respect it! Paid off is the way to go. I just got a 2007 23 lsv. I’m at about 8000’ above sea level, it has the 340 monsoon, do you think if I put a solid surf prop on it she will be able to get up to 11.2 mph fully weighted down?
    With ballast and surf gate will it throw a mean wave?
    Appreciate you brother, have fun out there!

    I have a 2005 340 with about 1000 hours on it lol and just so I get this straight you used the original block, machined the cylinders, replaced the pistons rods and crank to make it a 383 and of course reflashed the computer? That’s almost a game changer when it comes time for a rebuild

    • @btuff
      @btuff  Год назад +1

      And it uses less fuel, no joke. It's way more efficient. yes to all of that.

    I didn't mention in video but it's +100 of torque over monsoon 340.

    ****READ THIS***** If you are replacing your motor from a motor that was burning oil, replace the O2 sensors. I had one side running leaner because of the carbon buildup on the sensor. Replaced them both and now it looks even on the plug.

    How many hours were on that 340 before you rebuilt? I have about 230 hours on mine. Only difference is I don’t have the CATs on mine. Got me all worried, going to start checking my oil before and after each run lol.

      480. Keep an eye on the manifolds.

    • @austengross7535
      @austengross7535 2 года назад

      @@btuffWhat do you mean by "keep an eye on the manifolds"? Also, that seems like pretty low hours for burning that much oil, especially with the immaculate care it gets from you. Did you compression test the engine at all before it was pulled? I have one as well with a lot more hours and I'm wondering if I should be looking out for something.

    • @btuff
      @btuff  2 года назад

      @@austengross7535 The exhaust manifolds were prone to cracking before the rerouting of the water lines. The result was dumping a lot of water past the exhaust valves into the cylinders and into the oil. The cylinder walls would get thrashed, which leads to excessive blow by.

      @@btuff Thanks for the reply. I bought 08 23lsv with 1050 hours on the clock and have put 150 more on since. I'm always on the lookout for what causes these things to fail as I'm sure I will have to repower it at some point but want to kick that can as far down the road as possible. One service item I have found very useful is having oil samples tested every oil change to track engine wear over time. I will also pull v drive and trans samples for every oil change as well. So far so good but definitely keeping my fingers crossed.

      Crazy to think all that at 480 hours, still cheaper then a new boat tho. I’m going on 330 hours on my 08, getting ready to prep the floor for gator step to get done before summer.
