The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company presents “Along the Santa Fe Trail,” a 1950s-era color film promoting travel by train. The film opens with a colorful array of travel brochures and schedules spread across a table at mark 00:28 before offering a montage of potential destinations across the United States - from snowcapped to beaches, from bustling urban areas to wide open spaces, from factories to farmland - there are “twin bands of steel” that carry the “lifeblood of America” across the country as a train is shown speeding down the track at mark 01:35. No matter where the viewer wishes to visit on vacation, the narrator explains (near mark 02:00) that there is probably a Santa Fe ticket office nearby to help get them there, as the scene carries the viewer inside one typical office and “Mr. Ticketman” offers a “charming lady” some destination choices. To get there, a passenger has a choice of trains from the company’s diesel-powered fleet, including the Golden Gate train which serves the West Coast or El Capitan which offers service between Chicago and Los Angeles. The San Diegan takes travels from Los Angeles to San Diego several times daily, while the Grand Canyon Limited and Texas Chief, the Chief, and the Super Chief offers various cross-country options. Mark 03:20 takes the viewer onboard one of Santa Fe’s lounge and dining cars as the narrator explains the various amenities provided to the weary traveler. “There is a train and an accommodation for your every comfort,” he reminds the viewer at mark 05:43.
The film continues by taking its viewer to some scenic locales, focusing on Native Americans of the desert Southwest and northern New Mexico, in addition to parks and national monuments such as the Painted Desert or Petrified Forest National Park in northern Arizona (introduced at mark 09:00). Those locations are followed by scenes at Carlsbad Caverns and then to the hustle of Denver (at mark 10:37) - “the metropolis of the Rocky Mountain empire” - as well as Colorado Springs. From there we visit Phoenix, the Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Page, Arizona (mark 14:22), and Aztec ruins before visiting the awe-inspiring sites of Monument Valley at mark 15:00 and Grand Canyon at mark 15:28. Yosemite National Park is visited at mark 19:10, as the film continues to show the viewer a variety of natural wonders, including the warm beaches and other tourist spots of Southern California (shown starting at mark 19:30). Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses Parade takes center stage in the film beginning at mark 21:32, followed by a visit to Hollywood (mark 22:11), as we see Hollywood Boulevard and the Hollywood Bowl, and visit the stars’ homes in nearby Palm Springs while saying hello to child star Jackie “Butch” Jenkins at mark 22:51.The film ends with a look at the Intertribal Indian Festival in Gallup, New Mexico, starting at mark 23:50.

Thanks for the memories 👍🏻. As my gift when I graduated from college, my Grandmother took me from Chicago to Los Angeles about the Super Chief ... in a compartment. If only Amtrak could be that good (it can’t) I’d gladly give up flying now that I’m retired and have the time.
I love these,, shows everyone what America can be if you let it,!
America, you' ll always be beautiful.
If I could just go back for a day, to experience the height of the Santa Fe passenger system.
David C Why, that wouldn’t even get you from Chicago to L.A. on the Super Chief!
Go back for a day wind up staying for a lifetime...and that's exactly what I would do if I could...life was better then 😊
I guess I'm kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Zahir Dexter Try flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Emory Kareem yup, I have been using FlixZone for years myself :D
This makes me want to go back for sure.
Awesome video of my favorite railroad!

the lunch-counter diner (Budd) featured: At least one ended up on the Algoma Central where I had the pleasure to have a meal at the counter.
the atchison topeka and santa fe song in the intro!!!
Judy Garland sang that too
1962. 12 years young. From the lily white Buffalo suburb of Hamburg, New York to a then still safe Palo Alto, California. Dad transferred for a 6-month assignmet. 6 of us. In a 1959 land yacht Buick. Carefull. Don't cut yourself on the fins putting luguage in the trunk. Eye-opening experience for an almost teenager. Pay attention to the train passengers. We followed a fair part of the Santa Fe route... on Route 66. Look how society was, now is. Some good, for some. A lot now worse, for many. Well, at least 10 years later (1970) I won the first Vietnam War Draft Lottery, a 'just' system if ever there were one, and served and saved the world for democracy.... at the point of a gun. The illusion of someone's 1950's America now history gone. The stark reality of the elite's American Empire perpetual war industry and reality serving who for what? Now, at 73 years young and wiser, seeing it all so much clearer here in retirement. RT sends, envía, Colonia Centro Histórico, Puebla, México... Geez! What people hear, see and believe!
I Love This.
Thank You.
All this when people were people and trains were trains!!! oh, boy

A time when life was enjoyable, simple things like kissing your spouse in public without being assaulted and called a heterosexual homophobic sexist pig.
@@alvinmorris5404 not a good time for African Americans
Great stuff!
This film was released in 1946, as the footage of the Tournament of Roses Parade {21:26) is from New Year's Day 1946. The theme of the parade that year was "Unity and Peace".
"Fred Harvey's all the way!"
Before all the craziness...aweome video. Watching in March 2020 on stay-home time.
Awesome video guys! :)
21:08-
"Ah, Bergen, it's amazing!"
"What is, Charlie?"
"We've traveled three miles in this old jalopy, and you haven't moved your lips ONCE."
What's crazy is that those kids in the vid are in their sixties and seventies now.
More like 70s-80s since this movie appears to have been made in the late 40s
Why is that crazy?
@@areguapiri That's what I'd like to know too.. why is that "crazy" Jack? Ever heard of LIFE GOES ON? duuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh
Song at the beginning is "On the Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe"
What a pity that rail travel in the 2000s+ is more or less done by commuters and day trippers, the airlines have the monopoly on holiday and experience travel. Even here in the United Kingdom, birthplace of the railways, trains are aimed at the commuter and short journey travelling, long gone are the overnight sleeper trains (although I have heard they are making a comeback) the boat trains (board in London get of in France etc) Pullman cars offering fine dining, no, it’s all rush rush rush, no room to sneeze let alone sit, overpriced pre-packaged sandwiches, coffee and tea that tastes awful and is as warm as gazpacho, soft and alcoholic drinks in cans and plastic glasses, and getting a meal is reserved for 1st class only, and ticket prices are absolutely extortion, you can fly for less, in half the time and be guaranteed a seat, thank goodness there are heritage railway lines that you can still enjoy the “golden age of rail travel”.
Great video! There is even a Pacific Electric Hollywood streetcar in the Los Angeles section.
Very nice. Take care now.
Looks a lot more comfortable then Amtrack lol. I rode cross country with smelly socks and cramped quarters.
Nice !! )))
👍
Back in the days when Levy jeans were made in USA not in China.
Why cant Amtrak have those leg rests and pillows for your seats?
Micah Lall-Trail Which means they don’t want to spend the money for them.
Goverment train ((((
What year is this flim?it looks like maybe 46-47
Joe Ford Sharp eye! Definitely not the 1950's. Looking at 1:56 , 10:41 and 20:40, I don't see a single car from the '50's. My guess is ''47-'48.
4:54 yeah i dont believe that for a minute.
Where's the AT&SF steam locomotives!
Zero Obesity visible.
Have you ever seen the Great Barrier Reef? Probable never seen or heard of it.
What in the hell does the Great Barrier Reef have to do with this video????? Drinking heavily, are we?
Bite Me He looks like a meth head!!!!
Byte Me I think he means to compare it to the Grand Canyon. Can’t imagine why.
Wrong part of the world, bub.
Pure propaganda , letting the public think how idyllic Indian life was. They were living in poverty and isolation and prone to alcoholism! But an exciting way to travel in the glory days of train lore!
Whats up with the black bar in the middle of the video? Why leave that in there...?
Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
So, in the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RUclips users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content. We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to deal with these kind of issues.
PeriscopeFilm Thank you for preserving these films for generations to come!
8:09 oh dear, almighty God in heaven, for a moment I thought they were having gay pride parades back then!!! I mean, it is New Mexico.
Yeah, the Grand Canyon, I really want to be sitting on a mule as he walks along the edge of a cliff and can toss me straight down five thousand feet anytime he wants.
Byte Me Nah, you’d go maybe a couple hundred feet before you hit rocks and a tree or two! 😁
@@samiam619 ... ssssshhhh! Let the mule do as the immature "B.M." thinks! His type are the reason this world is the way that it is. The less of them there are the better off we are!

Too bad you jacked it all up with your stupid timestamp running on it.
