My grandmother told us before ww2 ( in Germany) they used to order clothes by mail. They were sent a catalogue, mailed in the order and received the clothes. They weren't rich but probably not very poor...
@warmbrucuriosity as a side note, I've always been fascinated by the design of currency and passports .. I'm not sure if that's a topic you'd find interesting, but there's a lot of historical links .. including the word passport itself, which originated with Shakespeare
