Shawn, you're totally killing it with all these great tunes. The amount of hard work and the diversity of music make you one of the very best. Thanks for all the fantastic music - it's greatly appreciated.
Everyone mentions the sax, but the guitar at the end shreds, and his voice is so smooth. Other great Rafferty songs are "Get it Right Next Time" and "Right Down the Line" - or for a deeper cut, try "Sleepwalking". Great singer-songwriter - RIP Gerry.
Top sax solo of that decade!Tied for first with Al Stewart’s Year of The Cat song!I bought the album after listening to this on an FM radio station back in the late 1970’s!Gerry had a major drinking problem all his life and struggled to make it big in this insane music industry.
ANOTHER trip down memory Lane! 19 years old and the world was my oyster. Hanging down South Baltimore at all of the truly unique bars and clubs. And this being played over and over! What an incredible time machine we have in music!! Again thanks for reacting to this incredible piece of music!!
@@User_gin_927untileternity A bit. I mean it's not really very far and I have been there for some reason I can no longer remember,🤣. But not really too familiar with the area. So, what FB team does he root for? 🏈 LOL
Welcome to part of the soundtrack of my early adult life! That sax is played by Raphael Ravenscroft (yep, his name is as cool as his play). For more installments of my young adult 'soundtrack' try Steely Dan's AJA, Supertramp's BLOODY WELL RIGHT, Doobie Brothers' BLACK WATER... btw, Baker Street in this song is the iconic Baker street of London. Also, try Steeler's Wheel STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU.
The only word to describe the Sax solo in this song is ICONIC. Once you hear it you never forget it. I first heard it in college, when it was new, and I haven't forgotten it yet. And I am well over 60.
The most famous Baker Street is in London. It’s where Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson had their fictional office/apartment. Almost across from that address, where a plaque notes the address, The Beatles had a shop in 1968, under their Apple Company to sell clothes, music, cool gear. Around the corner is Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. And Regent’s Park, where a Muslim Mosque is located. Baker Street is a vital area of London. You may hear a Saxaphone, if you visit.
That is such a killer song. And it was on the radio all the time when I was in high school but now that I'm older and have been a musician for many years I just love everything about it. I hope you check out his other monster hit Right On Down the Line. You'll love it I'm sure. But now that you've read about the history, you really should check out Stuck In The Middle With You by his early band Stealers Wheel. You will experience it as an early really cool and groovy pop song, but for those of us who grew up with it as this feel good song that was just on the radio a lot and it makes you feel good and loose, once you've seen Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, he completely inverts it and chooses to use that for the climactic scene of this hilarious but brutal movie. We can never hear that song the same again. But I still love it.😂😂
Just discovered your channel tonight my friend.... and im absolutely LOVING your reactions!!! You can totally see and feel how much you are appreciating this music 👏
Considered a rock classic, it's an iconic piece, everyone knows it. Gerry started off knocking around the pubs and clubs of Glasgow with a young Billy Connelly, in a group called the Humblebums. Then the comedy lured Billy away, and Gerry let his musical talents shine. Would have loved to have seen them when they were gigging together.
Music around Glasgow Scotland at that time, Jack Bruce cream, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Frankie Miller, Donovan and the average white band to name a few,
You procrastinated, but you did it, didn’t you? That’s all that matters. They played this a lot on the radio late ‘70s- mid-‘80s. It started slowly and earned more & more respect over time. What a great, unique song. I have to second Al Stewart’s “Year Of The Cat”. It’s also unique, telling its own story with great, unexpected instrumentation and masterful performances.
I see that someone already suggested Right Down The Line, they're right, great song. After that, though, there's a song called Get It Right Next Time that is neck & neck with this one as his best, in my world. Hope you'll get to that one, too.
Was going to suggest Get It Right Next Time myself but you beat me to it. I seem to remember the video features Gerry and the band playing in a studio setting..
I was on Baker Street in 2019 and it brought this song back strong. "So many people, but it's got no soul". No ill will to the people of London. Every big city is the same experience.
Every time I watch a reaction video to a song I swooned to in my teens, I’m reminded I was privileged to be a music loving teen in the 1970’s. These videos bring back so many emotions, memories and thoughts. Love it.
Thanks, Shawn.. holds a personal memory for me.. first time I heard it was leaving my boring office job on a Friday afternoon.. but let out a little early, paycheck cashed.. driving home along the Milwaukee lakefront.. money in my pocket, sun shining.. looking forward to the weekend.. and my whole life... I was, I think, 18 yrs.old.. this came on and I turned down the windows... sounds like FREEDOM... (p.s. Gerry was the lead singer for "Steelers Wheel".. you probably have heard "Stuck in the Middle with You"...)
If you want to check out another interesting and talented Scottish singer/songwriter look into John Martyn. He has a distinctive voice and plays a great guitar. David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, and Phil Collins all worked with him before his passing in 2009. In the late 1980s, Martyn cited Grace and Danger (1980) as his favorite album. His tune 'Solid Air' (1973) is soulful and emotional.
For a few minutes, I'm in 8th grade again and this song is on the radio on a very hot rotation day after day. I can picture my surroundings and school friends like it was yesterday.....
"The Year Of The Cat" begets "Baker Street" and "Baker Street" begets "The Year Of The Cat". You reacted to one, now react to the other! But you want saxaphone? Carole King's "Jazzman".
Perfect song! Thanks for doing the full version. It's always been on my top 10 list. It's about dreams, failure, and ultimate redemption. Best sax part, best guitar part, together magic.
You nailed it Shawn, alas the late great Gerry Rafferty RIP did not ever buy his piece of land and alas the booze finally got him, this song is quite autobiographical, city to city is Glasgow to London.
It's a bit autobiographical. When Stealers Wheel broke up, the record company in London would not let Gerry Rafferty issue his own solo music, which was very frustrating for him at the time and probably affected his feelings about London.
221B Baker Street, London, is best known as the address for Sherlock Holmes (the fictitious detective), there is still a Sherlock Holmes Museum there, just a little piece of trivia.
The whole album City to City is one of the best ever recorded and is full of great songs, not a dud track. Stuck in the Middle which he recorded with Stealer's Wheel is iconic because it was used in the Quentin Tarantino's film Reservoir Dogs to chilling effect.
The sax player later admitted to lying about him making up the sax solo when a studio tape of Gerry was found of him playing it on the guitar. The sax solo was already complete and ready to go when they brought him i to record it. So the solo was composed by Gerry himself. Gerry Rafferty was with the comedian Billy Connolly (the comedian and actor, check him out if you haven't heard of him but sure you will recognise him)in a duet called The Humblebums before they split and became more famous for different things
I was in high school and my mother liked the carpenters the fifth dimension. Herb Alpert She asked me to get her a copy of that song, Baker Street which I did.
I think of 9/11 when I hear "Baker Street." The haunting, huge sax solo reminds me of the planes hitting the Twin Towers in those giant explosions. Or a nuclear apocalypse. To me this music and lyrics is the sound of tragedy. This music is the sound of fear, pain & suffering. Especially fear.
As to the dispute over who wrote the sax solo, if you listen to Gerry's original demo of the song, it's a keyboard line with the same melody as the eventual sax solo. So they both deserve credit, because although the tune of it was blocked out, the passion with which Rafael played it takes your breath away. It's not just a sax solo, it's like a human voice conveying all the yearning and frustration and thwarted ambition of the song.
Years earlier he was the lead singer in the band Stealers Wheels who had a big hit with Stuck In The Middle With You.
Great song, Right Down the Line is another awesome song from Gerry Rafferty
Great song! You should follow this up with Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat
I was going to say the SAME thing!! Thanks!!
YES! Definitely Year of the cat!!!!
Also Time Passages has great sax solos
Or numerous songs from Supertramp: The Logical Song, From Now On, My Kind Of Lady, Bloody Well Right, to name a few
@@michaelbaucom4019 The live Bloody Well Right is incredible!
“Right down the line” from the same album should be next.
Shawn, you're totally killing it with all these great tunes. The amount of hard work and the diversity of music make you one of
the very best. Thanks for all the fantastic music - it's greatly appreciated.
One of the best sax solos ever!😎😎😎😎
For sure, also the long outro for Hazel O'Connor's "Will You?"
Gerry Rafferty, an incredible talent, so young, gone too soon. I pray he is finally at peace.
Gerry Rafferty was with Steelers Wheel which had hit Stuck in the Middle with You which you might be familiar with, great reaction as always
Year of the Cat is a song with great music.
Try his songs "Right Down The Line" and "Get It Right Next Time". "Days Gone Down" is good too.
Once you've heard that sax it stays deep in your soul forever.
Gerry Rafferty absolutely underrated. Prolific songwriter and artist. Do a deep dive. He will not disappoint. RIP
Everyone mentions the sax, but the guitar at the end shreds, and his voice is so smooth. Other great Rafferty songs are "Get it Right Next Time" and "Right Down the Line" - or for a deeper cut, try "Sleepwalking". Great singer-songwriter - RIP Gerry.

...And they both come from the same town in Scotland. How weird is that? :)
sax solo of human history

If you like this you'll love Year of the Cat by Al Stewart.
Number one for four weeks in Canada. Baker Street was on the radio all the time.
You just can’t say enough good things about this one.
So much ear candy in this song, and it always breaks my heart with every listen. 🥺 Another great reaction! ☮️❤️

1978 was good year.

One of the best singer/songwriters to have ever come out of Scotland.
The most famous Baker Street is in London. It’s where Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson had their fictional office/apartment. IF you liked this than you well love. Year of the Cat. Al Stewart album version
I love this song!❤
That explosion of the saxophone as you enter this song is incredible!
Classic. Can we have a quick round of applause for that guitar solo too? Marvellous. Gerry is also a 'Paisley buddy' like myself.
❤🏴💔
Right Down The Line
I had no idea there was a shortened version of this -- I can't imagine what you would cut out!
RIP 🏴💔
Me & Dad boating off the Jersey shore. Playing it loud & Proud. Awesome memory
Gerry Rafferty died of liver disease. He battled alcohol for many years. The theme runs through a good few of his songs.
That is such a killer song. And it was on the radio all the time when I was in high school but now that I'm older and have been a musician for many years I just love everything about it.

A masterpiece by Gerry
You know that sax solo is FIRE when it gives you that stank face!

Started slowly? It was number one for several consecutive weeks in the summer of '78!
I see that someone already suggested Right Down The Line, they're right, great song. After that, though, there's a song called Get It Right Next Time that is neck & neck with this one as his best, in my world. Hope you'll get to that one, too.

Another tasty tune from Gerry(RIP) Rafferty featuring wailing sax: " Get It Right Next Time "

A great classic, with great solo's, from the saxophone and guitar. I love it! 🎶🎸🎶🎷
Best Hollyday Song ever...Sax on the beach 🤘😜

I'm adding my vote to the many recommendations to do both Year of the Cat and Time Passages by Al Stewart! Great follow ups to this classic.
The Great jazzy Baker Street. You will love this......I do.
Shawn, the sax is phenomenal here. Always loved this song growing up.

What a song this is timeless

"The Year Of The Cat" begets "Baker Street" and "Baker Street" begets "The Year Of The Cat". You reacted to one, now react to the other! But you want saxaphone? Carole King's "Jazzman".
Back when songs told stories. Pure poetry, set to music played by actual musicians. Is there any wonder why I'm "Stuck in the 70's"?
Right Down the Line!❤❤
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Always have to crank this one up and hear them horns.

The sax is great but that is a hell of a guitar solo.
This is one of my fav songs Has awesome Sax and great story that sound's familiar to most people !
Gerry R’ was Scottish. His earlier band was Stealer’s Wheel.
❤🏴
My son who plays sax and guitar used to play this ALL the time!

Great reaction. 😊
Used to roll out of bed early to hear it all from my little FM radio...
Shouts to WPHD!
My back story is of little importance, but Gerry's contribution to my playlist is.
Like oxygen to keep the body alive....real music is meant to be taken in, to keep the soul alive. THANK YOU SHAWN !
Thank you so much! Love the sax. Love the lyrics, so many memories. Your channel is awesome 👌
If you decide to do "Stuck in the Middle with You" by Steeler's Wheel, be sure to do the video... it's quirky and fun! Cheers!
Also check out his songs Right Down the Line, Home and Dry, Get it Right Next Time, Days Gone Down , And The Night Owl.
It's a bit autobiographical. When Stealers Wheel broke up, the record company in London would not let Gerry Rafferty issue his own solo music, which was very frustrating for him at the time and probably affected his feelings about London.
Holy crap. This is like five in a row. Your reactions of my favorite songs you're hitting on the good ones I might have to subscribe
This was the saxiest song ever written.
221B Baker Street, London, is best known as the address for Sherlock Holmes (the fictitious detective), there is still a Sherlock Holmes Museum there, just a little piece of trivia.
I think it’s about growing up.
Every song on this album is fine to great, no bad songs on the album.
I liked the whole album and have it etched in my head. Night and Day is a sweet one.
Famously, Baker Street is where Sherlock Holmes lived in his apartment and practiced his elite detective work from.
this song to me ; always reminded me of sherlock holmes stories esp. after they revamped some production. because the address 221b.
The whole album City to City is one of the best ever recorded and is full of great songs, not a dud track. Stuck in the Middle which he recorded with Stealer's Wheel is iconic because it was used in the Quentin Tarantino's film Reservoir Dogs to chilling effect.
