Already out of finals contention, the Bombers were keen for a win over wooden spoon-bound Carlton, but an upset looked on the cards when the Blues got a three-goal start to the game. From that point on it could only be described as an onslaught as the Bombers romped away to a huge 99-point victory, notching their highest ever score against Carlton in the process. Hird was best on ground, Lloyd kicked seven, and Mark Johnson bobbed up with a career-high six goals.

Watching old hightlights of James Hird is just amazing. What a special player he was

Being down 20-3 after 12 minutes then going into quarter time 58-20 up is nuts. Almost as crazy as Mark Johnson kicking 6!

Jimmy Hird's goal at 12:15 is the classiest and most nonchalant goal from 40m I've ever seen ❤

Huge win! I feel like a watched a lot of footy back then but somehow I have ZERO recollection of no.17 Paul Thomas 😂

Mature age recruit who only played the eight games, all in 2005, and six of those were in losses. So yeah, not exactly a memorable career lol.

@@mus31was one three recruits that preseason that sheedy was saying could be the future. Slattery, Thomas and Monfries. I remember he played a game against his old side adalaide ,where he spent 75% of the game on the field and only had 5 tackles and 2 1percenters for the whole game…….didn’t touch the ball once
