Every role he played convinced me that he was that character. Loved Steve McQueen, gone too soon!
One of a kind, that's for sure.
I never thought he was that great but people like them so to each his own I mean if he made people happy I like Bogaerts Paul Newman who did I like Robert Redford was pretty good I can’t say that I was really anti-Steve McQueen he just never really impressed me a lot of them didn’t Broderick Crawford now there was an actor
I remember Steve in "The Blob" movie, when he was very young.
Will we ever see such a dignified, intelligent and kind time again? Unfortunately not.
During an interview McQueen was asked why he races cars his answer ........
"To remind myself I'm still a man and not just some goddam actor"

@Mookie Spindlehurst Newman - 2 time national champion, was a winner at Le Mons and won his last race at 83 years of age, plus being an award winning Broadway and movie star, director and producer who donated his time to student theater, treated women with respect and donated hundreds of millions to charity while being totally Cool (Hand Luke) throughout his career. Don't get any better.

@@alansorensen5903 Actually Newman dumped his wife and kids to marry Joanne Woodward whom he had gotten pregnant during their affair.
I was about 4 years old when this show was done, and McQueen was talking about making The Sand Pebbles at this time, and my dad, a WWII vet loved that movie and told me it was very realistic to a lot of what he had to deal with on the ship in the Navy and overseas. I miss him every day, and I miss McQueen too. Great actor and one of my favorites.
My 92 year old Dad was a Marine and served in Korea during the war. Steve McQueen was and is his favorite actor and The Sand Pebbles is his favorite movie. He watches that movie at least 3 or 4 times a year. I know the day is coming when he will be leaving this life and I will always cherish the memory of Steve McQueen and that movie because of him. Your father and my Dad are of the same breed of men that shall always be remembered. Steve McQueen was the best.
Steve McQueen was a great actor, sadly missed, remembered and loved even today.....

its a shame STEVE died so young from that Mesothelioma , From the bio by his 1st wife , He breathed in asbestos for 7 mnths during his tour as merchant marine . It was proven that it takes many yrs to cause the cancer in lungs, such a tragedy

There are lots of comments referencing Steve McQueen's movie career, but his breakout role was on television. Starting in 1958 he starred in "Wanted: Dead or Alive" as bounty hunter Josh Randall. The series ran for 3 years and made him a nationally recognized celebrity.
I watch that show over and over on metv and grit, never get tired of that series, great actor!
Steve McQueen's career trajectory from TV western to top-drawer cinema was almost like Clint Eastwood's. Steve left us way too soon.
@@ralphadamo1857 Agree 100%. Clint played Rowdy Yates in the series "Rawhide". The 2 series started a year apart: Steve's in 1958 and Clint's in 1959. Both were great.
McQueens autopsy mentioned almost every bone in his body had been broken and with heavy smoking he was had to be terrific pain .

Steve McQueen was the man and still is. Great Escape, Magnificent 7, Nevada Smith, etc. etc. Former Marine, and should have received an Oscar for Papillon. Mr Cool, he died to young. Semper Fi Mr. Mcqueen.
The Sand Pebbles 1966 is an excellent movie. I learned a lot......Mcqueen was superb. My dad was USN retired.
I loved Bullitt. But the SP was good too.

Sand Pebbles was controversial when released, due to the manner of how the servicemen were portrayed. This was during the Vietnam War. It's not one of the movies that come to many people's mind whenever they bring up McQueen, but it should be. He was superb in the film. A very young Candice Bergen also appeared with him in the film.
He never made a bad movie.♥️♥️♥️
Watching Steve McQueen in Nevada Smith, I'll always remember his reaction to having
a drink of a can of peaches and thoroughly enjoying it. Very subtle, but great acting and
I'm pleased he discovered his Lord and Savior before he passed. I look forward to seeing
him in eternity and discussing his journey to find peace in his heart.

@@stj971 I think he was playing a character that was supposed to be much younger because they would refer to him as kid. Steve was in his mid 30s at the time, but he still pulled it off; a credit to his acting ability.
Steve McQueen did a great Walter Brennan imitation! I'm surprised that Arlene guessed who it was so quickly.

I remember the newspaper advertising blitz for "The Sand Pebbles." Like a tidal wave it was. Arlene knew about the New York premiere.

Steve McQueen....Just typing his name gives me delicious goose bumps. I was so in love with that guy when young. And so sad when he passed. What a tragic end to a great talent and down to earth guy.
The good news is that he met Billy Graham and he prayed to receive Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior! So, it was a good beginning...

Wow, I have that movie, The Sand Pebbles, in dvd. Steve McQueen was great in it. I don't t know if he was at least nominated for an an Academy Award for this movie, but to me he gave a performance worth of some kind of recognition by The Academy of Motion Pictures. He was a very good actor.

The original Thomas Crowne Affair was far better than the remake. The chess scene was sexier than most movie scenes.

I live in New York City. Once, a few years ago. I was having a conversation with a group of people on various topics. There was an older woman who sat nearby, and throughout our discourse, simply smiled and did not utter a word. Later found out, that the woman lived in Queens, and she was appreciating the conversation, because it was in English. A language not spoken very much in her neighborhood. She also liked the level of our talk, along with The topics. Good English is hard to come by these days.

Got to watch a pristine copy of Sand Pebbles at a weeklong celebration of MCQueen's work at Lincoln Center years ago. His son Chad, with his children, Nelle McQueen (his ex) and a few co stars were in attendance all week. During the intermission of Sand Pebbles, Chad passes me in the lobby- I had spoken to him a couple of times during the week- and I whisper to him " Your Dad is badass in this film" He responded " Yeah it's a good one, huh?" Only in New York.
What a classy episode it was even before Steve McQueen appeared

I've been watching a lot of these today. I am jealous of how open the world was back then. So many people from different places of the world! I did get to go to many places myself. but now days, with everything going on and the fact I don't have the money, I barely get out of my town...sigh.

Love With The Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood.......one of my favorite movies, starring SM. Seems to be not a well known one. He plays a somewhat tough guy, but a softie at heart. What a great human being.

I like the panel, albeit missing Dorothy Kilgallen, & just love Steve McQueen. He left this world (& us) much too soon. He was beloved, truly so, being a v. loving man & an impeccable actor.
I miss Dorothy. It seems that many of the replacements, while pleasant, have no personality or charisma on screen.
A shame Steve did not fool the panel longer than he did because he disguised his voice very well.
You are missing WHY they keep guessing the famous actors. These shows pick actors who are premiering a new movie that week in New York. The panel reads a new movie opening that week and who stars in it. Over and over this happens. That's Jews for you. Always cheating. I've seen Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Woody Allen. All had new movies in New York opening sometimes that very night. Look for yourself. They ruin everything. Why am I the only one seeing this?

I studied film at UCLA and worked on crews for the film business briefly in L.A. I can tell you from experience that some celebrities have a certain undefinable "it", a camera presence if you will, some have egos that surpass their talent, and some have a little of both. But Steve definitely had "it" although I never met him because he was a little before my time. Thanks for putting this up What's My Line, appreciate it. You are my favorite What's My Line channel.

Steve McQueen did the best imitation of Walter Brennan I've ever heard. It's also wonderful to know that Steve McQueen accepted Christ as a savior before he died so we'll see him in heaven. 🤗

Steve McQueen was great in Bullitt and The Great Escape. He also did a great Walter Brennan impersonation. What is impressive about him is that he did a lot of his own stunts.
That's a fact. He did _all_ the motorcycle scenes and stunts in _The Great Escape,_ and of course his chase through SF in that next-step-down-from-a-Shelby Mustang might've been his finest moment (if you don't count _Gran Prix)._
@@briane173 actually not ALL the stunts the motorcycle scene was shared By Steve’s recurring stuntman Bud Ekins and the same goes for bullitt (the parts where you don’t see Steve’s face it’s bud ekins) Steve’s wife nelie was adamant about having a stunt double even though Steve didn’t like having one
My mom and I and others worked on “Bullitt” with Mr.McQueen, and he was the sweetest man alive! He loved kids, I was younger than ten at the time and it was the summer of love in S.F. and the shoot was at SFO where us whippersnappers would play on the people movers and luggage handling systems. We had a ball! Mr. McQueen, was so patient with me when I asked him questions about his scenes where he gets shot, and how the squib in his hand was pressed to make the blood appear on his shirt.He went through dozens. Also, the glass that broke was made of sugar material, all so amazing. He even sent me a headshot!

I prefer the old movie stars but Steve McQueen is one modern day actor I let into my world he is great and inderrated. Richard Burton too but not many of them are so good anymore!!!!!!!

his soldier in the rain was an underrated lil gem, with gleason.
"Soldier in the Rain" should be a classic. With Jackie Gleason, Tuesday Weld, and I'm pretty sure Blake Edwards co - wrote the screenplay.
The price he paid upon entering this world is truly heartbreaking. His parents abandoned him and sold him out. His story is truly devastating and he gave so much to the world inspite of the emotional and spiritual damage. I pray that he got his angel wings, what a strong and beautiful man.

Joe Postove Arlene Francis was very much an insider in the entertainment industry and started out as a female radio talk show host (very rare in those days) so when she heard the answer that the mystery guest was in a movie that was about to premiere that week, it would not take very much to guess who the mystery guest could be Plus, Steve McQueen was Hollywood's very first superstar and about 8 years after this appearance he became the highest paid actor in the world

Joe Postove Gables was a good actor and I'm not taking that away from him, but much of his fame was the old Hollywood studio propaganda which hyped many of the actors of that era. By earnings and number of "fans" due to the post war baby boomers, McQueen wins out hands down - McQueen was the first actor to be paid over $1 million a film and his estate upon his death was over $30 million which is over $70 million in today's money AND his name is still earning $7 million a year 35 years after his death. Can you say the same about Clark Gable?

The panel always guesses right because the mystery guest is always promoting a movie in town.

agreed i can only remember 3 episodes when they didnt & too bad Steve wasnt just visiting because the panel seemed clueless until they realized he was in the new picture in town
... except for when the MG was in a hit Broadway play, or was starring in a television show (preferably on CBS) or was a popular singer (they never guessed Julie London in her multiple appearances), or a star sports figure or a famous political figure.
Bennett had said that it was a fun job and relatively easy money (no lines to learn or rehearsals to attend). But doesn't mean there was no preparation for the show. Dorothy was up to date on the entertainment world because of her column and Arlene because of her radio program. Bennett kept abreast of things no doubt in part because celebrities often write (w/ or w/o a ghost writer) books that sell, but also because he was competitive. Also he (and Martin when he was on as well as some of the other male panelists) were expected to provide sports expertise for the panel.
It has also been revealed in interviews that the panelists would warm up before the show. Part of that was for one of them to think of an occupation and the others would try to guess it. The other part was that they would discuss who was likely to be the MG that evening. On a couple of occasions, I have heard Bennett or Arlene say, "Shall we say it all at once?"

This was real good and intelligent entertaining, not as today. Lacking current sophisticated shows I really watch this instead. By the way, charming Arlene Francis wears wonderful glasses ...

His film resume is nothing short of impressive, including "The Blob", "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape", "Love With the Proper Stranger", "The Cincinnati Kid", "The Sand Pebbles", "Junior Bonner", "Bullit", "The Thomas Crown Affair", "The Towering Inferno", and even his series "Wanted: Dead or Alive".

"The Sand Pebbles" was arguably McQueen's best movie and certainly one of his best performances.

+Mike Mast Absolutely! McQueen had a relatively short career, starring in about 25 movies from the late 1950s to 1980, but he was good in all of them. He was more of a movie star than an actor, but he had a great screen presence and stood out even in his mediocre pictures. He didn't have a lot of range, but he was excellent at what he played, the typical "cool" cat who oozed testosterone. Males wanted to be like him, while women wanted to be with him.

Steve Mc.Queen sounded(much!)like a "Real Mc.Coy." Oh, and, with me being a car-chase fanatic...he is a favourite. I'm now, going back, to August, to see his television co-star.
Helen Gurley Brown was an excellent panelist. Pity they didn't use her more on the show.

Bullitt has aged well. The cinematography, and even the clothing worn by McQueen look as fresh now as when the picture came out decades ago.
This show is great! Crazy- movies were in color but TV was black and white. My family went to an opening of Sand Pebbles.
At that time certain shows were in color. Batman for instance.

Mr. Koester seemed like a very kind person, especially giving his winnings on the show to the kids back in his home state, and giving those ivory bracelets to the two women panelists. I've only seen one of Steve McQueen's acting performances, and I believe it was Alfred Hitchcock's version of "Man from the South" by Roald Dahl. Such a good man and good actor.

***** It really depends on the source material. So much of game show history is preserved only because of individuals who made recordings on early home video equipment. We're just lucky that WML was mostly preserved, and eventually rerun so extensively for over a decade on GSN!

He died at age 50 because as a Marine, he removed asbestos insulation from pipes aboard ship when he was only 18. This was in the late 1940s when very few substances including cigarettes and nuclear blasts were considered to be wildly carcinogenic. The American Medical establishment either was ignorant or they did a good job at feigning ignorance.

A great movie he made that doesn't get much mention was "The Getaway" with Ali McGraw.

Cool. I really enjoyed The Getaway, both were excellent in it. Also, the great Ben Johnson and Al Letieri. I think it's an undervalued film, from Sam Peckinpaugh.

It's mostly about his racing, but there's also an unexpected story about a can of beans & a campfire that's pretty funny. *it's out of print, but you can still find used copies of it on eBay & Amazon
