Fabulous interview. This is Mooch at his best. Let the Admiral answer the questions. Let the expert shine, and shine he does. But Mooch is the guy creating the tone and tempo of the interview. Anyone listening to this has to be in awe of the capability and competence of the United States Navy. Two experts on display. Makes me proud to be an American.

VF-41, AT-1 (WC-640 AIMD ECM Shop) on the Iranian rescue fiasco cruise. Spent 32 days in transit to be choppered to the Nimitz flight deck in the Indian Ocean. I was pulled out early of my AV-C training in Millington TN and ordered to the Nimitz to assist in the assembly and testing of five Sanders Associates ECM pods required to protect the rescue choppers from falling victim to US manufactured SAM radar/missile launch systems we had sold Iran previously which were located on the southern Iranian coast. The "pods" were designed to be used to simulate ECM activity against our own SAM systems instead of Russian or Chinese systems and were loaded on F-14s for practice.
The F-14s were never launched from the Nimitz by presidential order at the last minute and well, you can imagine what really happened as the helos as they crossed the coast.
History indicates a different scenario but what's new about that.
      BTW
Over 5000 Nimitz sailors know the real story.

Ward it was a great pleasure to meet you at NTU airshow. I got there early and when I found your booth there was already a line of people to meet you. So I stood to the side and talked with your charming wife. Finally decided I better get in line as it wasn't getting any smaller. While I was in line I watched as you greeted everyone with a smile, hand shake and attentively listen to each person and let them take as much time as they wanted with you. After talking with you I found some shade beside your car so I camped out there as the airshow started. Your wife was so kind to offer me one of your booth chairs that wasn't being used to sit on. As the day went on I watch for 5 hours as hundreds of people came to meet and talk with you. It was so apparent that you enjoy meeting your subscribers and value our comments and suggestions. I hope the future you will work on producing a Naval Air Maintenance video. Respectfully SKY

When I reported aboard my sub and found out we were going to be in the shipyard for two years for refueling, I couldn't believe it. The early subs were refueled less than ten years after they were launched. My boat's original reactor core was from Westinghouse and when we refueled we got an improved design, long-lasting GE core. The Los Angeles class subs started getting long-life cores at construction in the mid-80s. These are the 688-i (improved) subs that go thirty years without refueling.

I led development of the Army's Deployment Policy for Operations Other Than War in 2000. We studied the deployment policies of every Service and discovered that 179 days was optimal because it enabled seamless Reserve Component mobilization and deployment with the active force, promoted better equipment, personnel and training readiness, and reduced stress on families. Post 9/11 we went to 9 months boots on the ground. While some will disagree with me, that's partly how we wound up in the current recruitment shortfall paradigm and lost a massive chunk of precious mid-career talent - not to mention the insanity of the COVID immunization and DEI policies that drove tens of thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines to cut ties with us. Bad policies have extraordinary negative impacts on operational readiness. It takes honest leaders with brains and guts to hold things together under such conditions. Those below us, who follow the difficult orders we issue, deserve our undivided trust good judgment, and loyalty. When we achieve that, they will drive on for much longer periods than we prefer.

A question I have, is how good is their damage control, to keep these ships from becoming reefs...

A carrier sailor from the 60s here. We were doing nine months standard with CVs on both coasts rotating. Just a reminder. Today's CVs are bigger, faster, and more complex. I take my hat off to you!

As always great stuff Commander Carroll!
I have full faith in my Brothers and Sisters in the US Navy, and all Branches... My fear is in our elected Officials tying the hands of Warfighters. The Admiral spoke of "Deterrence". I don't believe we (with Operation Prosperity Guardian) and European Allies (with whatever their operation is called) have achieved any deterrence when it comes to Iran, or their proxy fighters from Yemen, the houthi. Using remote controlled planes (calling them drones is a bit of a stretch) and home made rockets these cavemen have managed to essentially shut down 1/3rd of the worlds shipping. They have only escalated their attacks.
I don't say this to take anything away from the amazing work the crews did over the past year in the Red Sea. Record setting achievements in shooting down untold rockets, "drones", and other precision strikes all over the region. Protecting Israel during the Iranian rocket barrages. Our young men and women are amazing.

Rockstar → Shooter → Admiral ⇔ That must have an interesting story behind that! Fun that it was brought up but what was actually said didn’t explain it. 🤔
