Zimmer carried the Bengals through the Dalton era and would be a great option! I love what he does with the secondary! He was great at developing the pass rush!
Hey James & folks! I think Eberflus would be the answer at 'D-Coordinator' in my opinion. I like how he structured & coached the Bears defense. They were aggressive. Can he get the players that he wants tho'.
Question about Eberflus... wouldn't his defense be too complicated? I mean, the d-line wanted a simpler defense from Lou. It doesn't sound like Eberflus's defense isn't want the d-line wants/needs. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Horsemom121 Fair enough...can they acquire bigger A Gap players & morph into a different style of defense? We can assume that Hendrickson will still be there, they should build around him & whomever is the best defensive coordinator that fits his style of play should be chosen.
I agree w James, they've fired a lot of the defensive staff. It's to our advantage to get it done sooner rather than later so the new dc can pick their staff and get everything in line.
even though I loved Mike Zimmer when he was in Cincinnati and even though I suffered like a dog when he left for Minnesota, I believe he is no longer an effective answer for our team ... the game has gone too far ahead of his schemes
I'd be looking for smart guys that have new ideas and able to change with situations. Different looks for different opponents. The Bengals have got to start getting pressure in the face of Quarterbacks. They've got the backside covered, but man, not having a balanced rush against the quarterbacks hurts them and that's why they give up so many points. If you don't have that one guy who can do that, you have got to have schemes. You have to come up with SOMETHING. So much for the last DC. They never did have anyone show up from the other side. They have to find these guys and be smart about it. It comes back to, getting a fast start, getting home field advantage throughout the playoffs or KC again. There's ways of CREATING pressure against EVERY team out there. You just have to figure it out and find that one subtle edge you need. It's the little things that work. Don't forget, defense and special teams win championships. You saw that all of last year.
Matt Eberflus would be an excellent fit as a defensive coordinator (DC) for the Cincinnati Bengals-or any NFL team-due to his proven track record of building disciplined, high-performing defenses. Here's why he would be an ideal candidate: 1. **Proven Success as a Defensive Coordinator** - **Track Record with the Colts**: As the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts (2018-2021), Eberflus transformed the defense into one of the NFL's most consistent and opportunistic units. His system emphasized: - Forcing turnovers (takeaways). - Playing with high effort and intensity. - Sound tackling and fundamentals. - Under his leadership, the Colts ranked consistently in the top half of the league in total defense and takeaways, with multiple players thriving in his system. 2. **Expertise in Scheme and Player Development** - **4-3 Scheme Mastery**: Eberflus is a proponent of the 4-3 defensive scheme with a strong emphasis on discipline, gap integrity, and coverage principles. This could complement the Bengals' existing defensive personnel, particularly their talented pass rushers and linebackers. - **Linebacker Development**: Eberflus is particularly skilled at developing linebackers, as evidenced by the success of players like Darius Leonard (Shaquille Leonard) with the Colts. The Bengals' linebacker corps, led by Logan Wilson, could reach new heights under his coaching. - **Adaptability**: While his base defense is a 4-3, Eberflus has shown the ability to mix in hybrid looks and adjust his schemes to exploit opponent weaknesses, a trait critical in today's NFL. 3. **Culture and Discipline** - Eberflus is renowned for instilling a culture of effort and accountability. His "HITS" principle (Hustle, Intensity, Takeaways, Situational Smartness) demands players compete at a high level on every snap, fostering a mindset that leads to consistent defensive success. - The Bengals' defense under Lou Anarumo has been well-coached and aggressive. Eberflus would continue this emphasis on discipline while potentially taking the unit to another level with his proven ability to maximize individual and collective performance. 4. **Bengals' Fit** - **Complementary to Offense**: Eberflus's defenses excel at getting off the field on third downs and creating turnovers, which would perfectly complement the Bengals' dynamic offense led by Joe Burrow. - **Immediate Impact**: With established stars like Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, and Jessie Bates III (if retained), Eberflus would inherit a talented core that matches his defensive philosophy of speed and discipline. - **Playoff Pedigree**: His defensive systems have shown resilience in high-pressure situations, which aligns with the Bengals' aspirations as perennial contenders. 5. **Experience as a Leader** - While his head coaching tenure with the Chicago Bears has faced challenges, it has provided him with leadership experience that could elevate his effectiveness as a coordinator. He understands the big picture and how to manage players and staff in high-stakes environments. Conclusion Matt Eberflus would be an ideal DC for the Bengals because of his deep expertise in defensive football, ability to develop players, and track record of instilling disciplined, high-effort play. Pairing his system with the Bengals' existing talent would likely result in a top-tier defense, capable of dominating in a competitive AFC.
