I think the most important thing about the whole daughter and watermelon dress situation is that the daughter needs to be talked to and explained why and how people may feel about it. She should be encouraged to continue doing what makes her happy but also be aware of the unfortunate reality that may come with it so that she can be prepared for any negative/ignorant reactions!

I had to look up the whole watermelon and black kids thing and from what I read it symbolized their freedom and emancipation. Supposedly, freed black slaves sold watermelon. Can someone please tell me if I don’t know the whole story?

Jackie, there are other ethnicities in St a louis now. As a nurse, I’ve made some beautiful Christian women friends from Nigeria, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Philippino, just to name a few. I love Diversity of Cultures. I loved watching this talk with you and the two other women. It was very informing and beautiful. And I, too, love Jesus so very much. ❤️❤️🙏🙏

we should embrace diversity. but if we do not have a diverse community in our church, we should not feel like there is something missing as long us the doors are open for everyone who would like to join. we should not discriminate people but we should not also be obsessed with the idea that why our church doesn't have black people in it.

God's intentional creation of differences among the same species to display His character, creativity and authority in calling said creation 'good'.

But the watermelon should be okay. Let kids be kids. I honestly didn’t even know about the stereotype until my teens. My context is that I was raised in Jamaica. But she should be able to wear it and not avoid something she likes because of someone else’s ignorance.
