I had a hobie 16 when I was 15 years old. Used to sail off the beach at Indian Rocks beach, Gulf coast, Florida. I could fly the hull on a whim. I could right the boat by myself when capsized. I had no experience sailing. Was clueless on sailing jargon techniques or anything having to do with sailing. Yet, sailing was natural to me like breathing.
The reason? I didn't know enough to know what I didn't know
I just went out and sailed. I learned by trial and error, but because I didn't care about capsizing, the learning process was QUICK! Same way I learned how to snow ski. I fell down 1000 times My first day on the slopes but I fell down that many times because I didn't care if I fell as I was determined to learn to ski. I was skiing blue and milder blacks by the end of my first day.
The point is, my advice to anyone wanting to learn, just go out and do it. The wind will tell you what do do. If you capsize, you capsize. That's part of the fun. That's how you learn. You can spend a thousand hours watching these videos asking a million questions, or you can go spend a day on the water. Once again, don't be afraid to dunk it. You will quickly learn your limits and what the boat will and won't do.
I did the same. I just want to help people who don't have the time or energy to go through the same process.

Best one yet Joseph! I mean who didn't start sailing Hobies to fly hull?! I'm a pilot by trade and to me flying a hull is still the closest thing to soaring like a bird. Just wind a sail and gliding over the water. It doesn't get any better than that.
Keep up the great work, maybe someday I'll be able to venture from western Canada to Greece to sail with you and your gang.
When flying a hull, make certain you stay back! Sitting too far forward, the leeward hull will bury the bow and the boat will capsize immediately ending a perfect sail. And flying a hull actually slows a boat. As the windward hull rises, the boat almost goes into slow motion. Only thing better-flying wearing a butt bucket and out over the edge, pure joy. The reason to buy a Hobie.

This one never gets old. Just a thing of beauty to see that knife edge control of balance and power.
One of the most important things in sailing is to be having fun (unless you happen to be going somewhere) One of the unique things you can do with a catamaran is fly the hull.
As well as it being fun, it's a great exercise in control, regardless of your level, a great way of finding the limits of your boat. And looks great in photos!
Bro, I've been sailing for one year and a half. I learned by myself with a Hobie Wave that I bought...anyways; I just learned, a couple months ago, how to fly the hull and it was, in mostly everything, thanks to this video. I do it in a Hobie Getaway 2019 and really is the best feeling ever!

Recently purchased a 1979 Hobie 18' and, after much refitting, have now had it out two times. What love! And I must say, your videos are the most informative, clear, and practical I've come across yet as I learn the tricks and traps of the wind. Thanks much! I'll be watching for sure! Will be in Kardamyli in September and now regretting not scheduling enough time to zip up to Vasiliki. Next year! Again, keep up the great work; you're inspiring!
I had a Hobie 18 in the 80's, then got a supercat 20 tall rig. Had a 12' beam and a 38' mast with 100 square feet more than the Hobie. Loved small craft advisories sailing. A need for speed. Lol

Just did this today on Hobie-16 with some success. Best day out so far. One epiphany was the in and out tension on the sheet instead of just out. Before this it was all higher higher until panic set in and let out main and/or corkscrewed into the wind. A close up video of the main sheet rope movement side by side while flying would be cool. I still worry that as I tension sheet, it might get cleated, and eliminate one of my safety exits. I thought flying the hull would be life changing, and it is! Thanks for the great work you put into these vids.

Practicing flying the hull is such a great way to learn to control your cat.
I would also practice nucleating the mainsheet - spend time doing it every time so that when it matters you can do it easily.
For me, that is extreme sailing.

What I needed right about now.
Several decades ago I was in a place and time where I had a chance to put a couple hundred hours on a 16 doing this. One of the highlights of my life, great to see you execute so well.

When I was a young teenager, the guy down the beach from us, took me out on his Hobie Cat, when it was blowing force 6-7 - we got to make full use of the trapeze & it was some of the most exhilarating sailing I’ve ever done. On holiday in 1984, I watched with mixed feelings, as a squall ran across the bay in Penang & as it reached each of the rental Hobie Cats, one by one, they capsized, sending the rental dudes into frantic action, in their support boat. I was mainly upset that my parents hadn’t let me hire one, as I actually knew I would have enjoyed an exciting sail.

Joe, great videos, I just started on your channel and binge watching to soak up knowledge. As a beginner sailor, can you explain the steering element of this? I understand the sheets - you let the main out, you reduce power. How does steering impact heeling? Turning into the wind should reduce power in a close reach, but in my (very limited) experience, it can suddenly increase heeling and result in a capsize. Thanks a lot!

Do you have any advice when you feel yourself going past the point of no return? Last time I that happened I turned into the wind (maybe a bit hard) in conjunction with letting as much main sheet out as I could which kept me from going over but stalled me on the spot. Would turning downwind do any better? (Assuming you are on a broad reach) I'm thinking gravity of turning sharp would bring you down.
If you're on a close reach or upwind then turning into the wind will bring the hull down. On the broad reach turning down wind will do it. It depends on what you want to achieve, here where i'm just out to fly the hull i'm using the mainsheet more and steering less.
when you are upwind and sheeted fully in if you don't want to turn up too much let out both of your sails, not just one until they luff then trim slightly. If this does not work, you do not need to turn all the way onto the wind, just head up a little.

Hi Joseph, enjoying the videos, if when your flying and you think your going to capsize, do you steer into wind as a quick way of recovery or just release the mainsail
If you're sailing upwind or on a tight reach and the steering to control the power doesn't need to be so much that you loose speed then steering is good. If it's a bigger gust a combination of steering and sheeting out is preferable.
How did you mount the GoPro to the bridle? Makes for an awesome video!

Joe, what is the reason the jibs on Wildwind boats has been changed from the OEM Hobie colored jib to a white jib? Do you order the boats this way or has the jib been replaced?
This is a spare jib that we have to use while the original is being repaired.
The Jibs get tired much quicker than the mains so we often replace the jibs separately.
I bet you're good at doing wheelies on a motorbike or bicycle as well! (If so, would you compare the two as a similar "feel" for the tipping point?)
completely different! I actually started learning to wheelie on my bike recently and i'm still a way off having it nailed. The flying a hull is easiest learnt in the lighter winds to get the feel for it.
Joe, a great vid! We do a lot of hull flying here just for the fun of it and the sudden quietness when the hull is up is fascinating. What sort of gimbal setup do you have? I'm looking for one too, but of course it has to be waterproof. Thanks for an idea. cheers.
This is using the Feiyu tech WG my one isn't waterproof but they do a waterproof one now.
I've had it for a few years now and it's still working well.
The one drawback is that the mic on the camera picks up the sound of the motors.

Hi, I use a Feiyu Tech WG gimbal, the one that I have isn't waterproof but they have since brought out a waterproof one. It works really well keeping the horizon level when flying the hull.

Dude .. was so close to flying a hull today .. we took my friends 16 out for a shakedown and the port side stay ripped out of its screw (rusted) 😣. Fortunately where were still in the harbor and got a tow back to the launch.

Hi, I was wondering if you know and what do you think of the Minicat 420 evoque to start using a catamaran?
I have looked at some pictures, It looks like a good way of getting out on the water and you would certainly gain some cat sailing skills on there.
You gotta get a harness so you can stand on the side of the hull and go faster without flipping it.
And get a jib man for more counterweight and faster control and turns.
Oh yeah!
However, flying the hull solo is great for practicing control and feels great!
To ease a potential capsize, is it better to turn into, or off of the wind?
Generally into the wind.

On this video I used a stabilising gimbal to keep the horizon level. It worked really well.

Yes for that one i used a Feiyu tech WG gimbal attached to an extra piece of chainplate bolted on.

maybe a silly question Joe... but what is wrong when you sheet in the main and the hull doesn't fly up? I can only do it close to 10 Kn of wind but then I don't feel very relaxed with waves and speed... from the video it seems to me you can do it also in light winds...
To encourage the hull to fly in lighter winds - make sure that the boat is on a close reach (between upwind and half wind) don't over-sheet the sails - by getting more speed you generate more apparent wind. If it's still not lifting move your weight inboard and if necessary, to the leeward side.

Yes, I think I would. 16 though not a 14 - I think that the extra space and volume would be needed!

Joe, all of your videos seem like you're always on the same side of the boat usually. Is that due to you sailing out of the same port?
quite possibly - if you watch the second half they'll mostly be on the other side!
What point of sail is best/easier to fly the hull?
A close reach/ close hauled course is best for control
You were sailing so fast you could have used the other sailboats as race marks!
Make sure you are in good enough shape to fly the hull without wrecking your back or neck. (It was fun! Only 40 years of intermittent pain.)
I'm very sorry to hear that. This is very important advise (which i never mention) cat sailing is probably not ideal for your back at the best of times.
Deeply blade keel the mast not the boom.. then sail 90 degrees to the wind . A down hill reach high sixties and see the speed. No more than an inches from the water.

Working more mainsheet should give you more confidence and really let you know where you are in regards to power. The mainsheet is the key.
....easy to balance ...just care for gusts before they come to the sail.
A good exercice to learn "kissing the waves" is to sail without the cleats
I think that you should not bring it down, take it to its limit and capzise if possible. You will earn a lot of confidence and I'm pretty sure, after that, the boat will just capzise whenerver you want it to. :)
Joe, I assume you are doing this with the sheet uncleated?
yes, every time i sheet in, if it goes in the cleat I like to take it out immediately

looking cool, practicing control, other than that, not really.

having the windward hull just clear of the water is the fastest way to sail, the extreme angles look good but are very inefficient.
ASAMETERICALLY HULLS ARE FLAT ON THE OUTSIDE...FLYING THE OUTSIDE HULL IS FAST......MUCH LIKE SURFING...HOBIE 16 ARE A EXCELLENT WAY TO POWER SAIL.....FLIPPING IS NORMAL IN STRONG WIND BUT EASILY RE FLIPPED.....IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCED!!

That would be the ideal situation.
Here we're just looking at controlling the hull flying, not so worried about speed.

Joe. Apart from the thrill of the height, why fly a hull? At such an angle - 20° to 30° - the sail must be spilling a lot of air and losing power.
Yes, it's generally very inefficient, spilling wind, hull slipping sideways - you can actually fly the hull nearly to a complete stop.
The purpose of this is mostly as a control exercise but problably more because it's fun and it looks cool!

Dont use a cleat on the main sheet. Thats disatorus. Use the traveler 2:1
I use the cleat on the mainsheet quite a lot but I'm constantly training on nucleating to make sure that I can get it out.
How come your not on trapeze? That is wimping out big time mate. How about 2 on the wire and so far up you can see over the top of the mast and the beach over the top. Gets the heart pumping.
Next time, i'll be brave and get out onto the trapeze!

I thought that flying the hull will reduce the drag and thus the cat will go faster. Why it‘s not the case?
When you go higher than 'just out' you start sliding sideways and the rig looses efficiency

starting off just by occasionally popping the hull out and then putting it back in by letting the sheet out is a great confidence builder.
