      I suspect they may be using the campus protests as a means to get public attention and to give an air of legitimacy to what's to come... Socialists have said explicitly that they plan to protest and riot this summer and that is who is organizing the students. starting out on campuses makes it look like student protests run amuck when the rioting starts, which distracts ppl from seeing the riots for what they actually are.

    I have really appreciated this channel for some years now. However, I am struggling with this conversation in that there doesn’t seem to be any expressed acknowledgment that there may be some true and thoughtful conviction held by at least some, or even a large number, of the participants in these protests. The world, through the lens of many social media platforms and of both independent and mainstream media has witnessed the death, injury, and orphaning of thousands of innocent children in this war. The United States government continues to send tax dollars, in our name, to support Israel's war against Palestinians, regardless of how it might be being waged. Is it ever ok to protest a government's complicity in an action you feel is wrong? Or are you just saying that these students are on the wrong side of what you see as a just war? I have struggled to be involved in protests and marches at times because of my discomfort with the organization, action, or language used. But I have also been inspired to act, as well, through my involvement with other protests, silent and prayerful vigils, or with lobbying efforts. Is it your belief that to be "anti-woke" means to reject, altogether, protest as a legitimate means of trying to influence change? If one thinks that our government should not authorize the use of taxpayer funds for a particular project or agenda, could not right action include thoughtful protest?

      @deborahknox2433
      I am inclined to agree with you with regard to the methods and rhetoric used by many in some of these actions. However, I have also heard of many instances of there being, for example, unified actions of solidarity in which participants from Jewish, Arab and Muslim traditions are holding vigils and inviting others to support a ceasefire. Many people around the world and on our campuses are viewing the absolute horrors of war (including what took place on October 7th), and so many are deeply moved by the suffering. My discomfort in listening to individuals on this podcast, individuals I have come to respect and from whom I have learned so much, seem to be unmoved or at least unaware that such horror will, indeed, move a population of people to act in opposition, even if sometimes in less than thoughtful ways. At times, in this conversation, I feel opinions are offered in a way that reflect callousness or smugness. Perhaps a strong position of support for Israel and their waging this type of war is behind this attitude, but there certainly does not seem to be a clear expression of concern for the death and destruction that continues to befall so many thousands of innocents.

      @@thomaspaulrussell Couldn't agree more. At this time, I think the fact that a genocide is being committed is enough for me to put aside my discomforts around shouts/strong language and join these protests/do what I can to bring this to an end. I've made pamphlets and handed them around, and it's tough, I get social anxiety and sometimes I feel embarrassed. But it's a matter of perspective. People are being erradicated by the thousands, and any amount of discomfort that comes out of this kind of activism is nothing in comparison to that.

  • @whatevermv
    @whatevermv 5 месяцев назад +1

    As a long time viewer, this was disappointing to listen to, albeit I haven't listened to all of it yet. I'm as critical of the woke crowds as the next rational person, but at times, the American bubble is very real. To only see the Palestinian genocide through the lens of whinging young people with no other purpose is very reductive, and shows just how consumed we've become by very first world problems (i.e. the debate of gender/race) when we're unable to zoom out and realise that there are human-rights level problems worldwide.
    As the old saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day. I do not see young woke students who thrive under a good cause, and anti-war protest being mutually exclusive. In future history books, these protests will not fall under 'woke culture and its insanity', it will fall under 'anti-war protests of the 21st century'. These protests would have happened whether or not woke culture existed, because of the scale of the crimes. And as much as I think everyone should understand their cause to the root, I also believe witnessing a genocide is probably plenty reason to propel any young hot-blooded people to do something with their energy. Not everyone needs a doctorate in a cause, especially one as urgent as the crime of crimes. It simply goes against the grain of humanity, and that is enough for them to take a stand.

    Also, look at the break down in simple relationships over time. There are unintended consequences for all actions. If you create a separate department for Ethnic Studies, will there be results that might have negative consequences? Why wasn't ES simply part of the Sociology Department or the History department? Instead, a group broke off and created division, more bureaucracy.

The only thing they provided was the complaint that we were racist, homophobes but provided great dinking establishments..it would be wonderful if we can get climate activists to prove that the neighborhood is being destroyed by overdevelopment but they would rather live in the developments and drink and complain about unproven climate damage thousands of miles away. Jews are resilient. They have 2000 years of history encoded in their DNA that education is their greatest form of resilience. Other minority groups might want to understand that the Jews who survived the Holocaust embraced life and survival. They didn't demand that others pay them for their pain. Instead, they put their heads down and persevered. And when MENA region Jews were expelled from their home countries in 1948, they also persevered. Their descendants are now the majority of Israel's Jewish population. What did the Palestinian Arabs do in 1948 when the UN established two states (where no state had existed before), they fought the new Israeli state. They did not do what the Jews did and build. No, they denied themselves their own internationally recognized state...and that is the path they have followed since then. To the detriment of their own people, culture, society, economy.
