    Really good advice. I can only add few minor tips: #1 sunscreen if applicable #2 extra shell/shirt (if riding not in balmy weather). #3 train line nearby if for some unforeseen reasons you must bail out

    Good advice there. My ambition, when I started to be a "serious cyclist", was to able to ride 100 km any time I wanted. Happily can do that now, just whacked one out today getting ready for the ATB 210.

    I am 50, last year I did my first 100k around Hamburg. Wrong preparation (2 months only), wrong diet (I ended up bonked) wrong tactic (I was left alone for 30 mins) and with a slightly wrong bicycle (cyclocross with just road tires). I enjoyed it so much, leading me to participate in cx events, crits, brevets, road cycle events, still going. I only bought myself carbon wheels, road shoes and pedals and a longer stem.

    Good advice, thank you! I turned 50 earlier this year and did my first long rides this summer (mostly on gravel) - three of them over 100k in and around Oslo, Norway, where I live. It's a great idea to save something to look forward to for the last 20-30k - tailwind, long descents, or nice smooth tarmac after 70k on gravel:)

    So i did my 1st 100km today. I do 50 km rides 2x/week all the time and have done 60/70/80 and 90km in the weekends. So 4 me no prep. its winter in The Netherlands @ the moment but a buddy i know hunts and had about 4kg of wild boar ready for me 2 pick up. Woke up after a bit of a late night with 1 too many glasses of wine but felt clear and fresh. had some toast and a cup of tea. The 1st 45 km i was flying with a back wind blowing @ about 15kph. collected 4 kg of wild boar and set of once again. Had a power bar and some fruit. The wind really started getting strong by then 20/25 kph head wind all the way back. So head down and use the triathlon steering bars. final average in the end was 26.3 kph and elevation change off 500 meters. Legs feel great and it was very enjoyable. in short no prep, just a nice ride with 4kg of wild boar along 4 the ride. PS, Just did not enjoy the wind that much. Cycle @ 30kph, turn the corner and your down and struggling to stay @ 22kph.

    Did my first 100km ride in 2019 summer. It was nice to do through an event because the organisers took your belongings to the end of the event for you, and there was no fear of getting stranded.
    The only prep I did besides the 2km commute was a 70km ride, which was way harder because it was solo, and I was carrying my backpack and my heavy d lock.
    I got a £200 road bicycle which was nice, with drop handlebars, and it was comfortable enough for the 100km ride.
    This summer, I'll be getting a nicer road bicycle and a cheap go pro and will actually train and try to build up to a 120mile distance (might take till next summer) since that's the ironman triathlon distance.
    After that, I'd like to do the London to Paris, and also do a marathon and combine running and cycling in one day.

    Ive completed the century 4 times now, 3 times on road and one on a gravel trail, all four times on a mountain bike. Anyway i went out and bought myself a road bike to make rides of this distance easier and more comfortable. Anyway since I’ve bought my road bike i have not done a ride of this length because suddenly my parents don’t want me to, they say it’s unnecessary but i love the long rides, going out of my local suburbs, seeing new sights and in general just having a bit of an adventure to a place i have not been before. The other thing is i am 18 now and i don’t want to be held back from doing what i love because my parents want to wrap me in cotton wool protection. Any ideas on how i can convince them to let me do these rides?

    • @melbournecyclingsegments7510
      @melbournecyclingsegments7510  4 года назад

      Depends on the surface and terrain and elevation. For road riding it's easier to calculate as you have a fair idea of your average speed, it might be trickier for MTB adventures. Maybe track your progress over the first hour or two to give you an indication of how long it will take....and have FUN
