Shrewsbury, a market town and the county town of Shropshire, England, has a rich history that dates back to at least the year 901, although it could have been first settled earlier. During the early Middle Ages, the town was a center of the wool trade, and this was a peak in its importance. It was probably founded as a town in the 8th century by the Saxon rulers of Mercia, who needed a fortified burh to control the Severn river-crossing on the road between the burhs of Hereford and Chester. It replaced the large Roman fortified town of Viroconium Cornoviorum only 5 miles to the south-east. During the Industrial Revolution, the town became a center for ironwork, leatherwork, and brewing. Shrewsbury's strategic position near the border between England and Wales has made it a town of great importance. The town has been involved in wars with the Welsh, and Edward I entirely rebuilt the castle. In 1403 Henry IV consolidated his throne in the Battle of Shrewsbury.

My favourite kind of historic town. It has maintained it's original look of growth over the centuries, yet with good shopping facilities, and movement of traffic . I took a drive from Bristol some years ago, through Herefordshire and Shropshire right up to North wales, instead of the usual route, (M5 etc) and was stunned by the beauty of the undulating countryside, with a backdrop of the Welsh Hills in the far distance. That road took me through some beautiful villages, and towns, like Shrewsbury. Highly reccomended. Good job here too, and so fortunate to have such exellent weather.

I moved away almost 50 years ago but was back for a 3 day visit recently. You would have had an even better walk if you had explored more of the passageways (called "shuts") that honeycomb the town. You also missed the gem of Bear Steps and the link to the movie of the Scrooge movie that was filmed in the town. As such - a bit too much walking on busy traffic streets but you certainly gave an essence of the town. It is gorgeous and thoroughly unappreciated when I lived there.
