I think his death is neccessary. otherwise his existance would confuses Dina and she may not decide to be with Ellie. So the whole story would not be this complex and Ellie wont have conflicts for killing Abby
the kitchen scene when ellie and dina were dancing reminded me of my own parents and it really hit me right in the heart because of how in love they are

There is enough clues that we can guess Dina did go to Jackson while Ellie was gone. I think Ellie wasn't very surprised to see the house empty because Dina warned her, she could'nt waiting for her with the expectation of her never came back. After letting Abby go on the beach, Ellie learn a wisdom life lesson from her journey. She have the mental logic now to be stronger than ever. I think her future is very bright and positive.
Not just about their storyline who was probably one of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a video game even if I had a black out for 2 weeks when I realized Dina left and Ellie was alone at the end I couldn't believe it but the acting of the actresses who played Ellie and Dina are just amazing talented women
And then it was the last time they saw each other. It's so hard watching Ellie getting worse and worse. I hope Naughty Dog will do a last effort for part three to get things together. I don't want an end like this. Not this empty house.
I feel so sad for Ellie how she got ptsd from Joel's death, how she went from being a happy person and always doing goofy stuff in the first game from having to deal with ptsd and have lust to get revenge and kill abby which made her lose everything. I really hope she found Dina and JJ cause they were her only source of happiness I'm pretty sure she did find them tho cause when she goes back to the farm house in the last few minutes of the game shes wearing Dina's bracelet and before when she fighting abby shes not so I guess she does go back to Dina which I guess makes me a little bit better knowing that

The moments after the farm for Ellie is very important, the fact shes didn't killed Abby on the beach is very very important to elevate the meaning of the game. Characters fates is one thing but the game is deeper than that, the game give us a wisdom lesson in 25hours of entertainement. This game is talking about Hatred, the game is showing us the disastrous consequences of that, the game is giving us 2 point of views (Abby and Ellie). The game was giving us the tools to learn and understand by ourselves the situations. In the theater when Abby left Dina and Ellie alive, on the beach when Ellie left Abby alive . This 2 moments shows, this 2 characters finally successed to get out of the vicious circle of revenge, and this is not an easy thing to do. The game is showing us, how and why, this is necessary to give up on hatred. Ellie was wrong to seek for revenge, you can't live an happy life with this mentality . Look at Joel's brother, he's a grown man and he still seeking for revenge, he begun to be a negative person, his wife left him, nothing good is awaiting someone who took this path. Giving up on revenge, make you a stronger/better person. Even if we don't see it in a cutscene, i've no doubt Ellie still love Dina, we can expect the best. They are alive, and Ellie has definitely grown from her journey. Ellie is ready to let go on the past and move on forward.
I liked their relationship, but at times it really seemed like Dina was just using Ellie as a rebound. Like why did Dina and Jesse have to be together in the first place? I understand that you need conflict in order for romance to be intriguing in films/games, but isn’t them being in a same-sex relationship conflict enough??? I just wish Naughty Dog wouldn’t have brought Jesse in the picture...
