James Palmer you both do, his legacy is just as important as him & people like you have kept his memory alive. Our industrial heritage is something that is fading away, but with his old headgear on show in Astley and the fact that it has been preserved, this can now he admired by a younger generation that will hopefully taken an interest into an era that is no longer.

I’m not in awe I’m in shock to see how much machinery is missing from the workshop area’s. Steam boiler gone steam engine missing that ran the workshop machinery even the pit head is gone as it was finished and working just before he became ill it was his last major mission he completed. I just can’t believe how much stuff is missing and we was to believe it was going to be a museum but it looks like it’s been robbed out side. Fred was and alway will be my engineering hero he’s the worlds greatest lost to history and modern times as they merged. Good video well handled just hart breaking for some of us to see a man lifetime pulled apart it’s something no one gets to see once you past on the pearly gates of heaven
Yes it is a pity. Just as the chimneys were all torn down, but don't forget weather and expense of keeping things up, they all take their toll. I'm sure the steamroller has a new owner that appreciates it. Preservation is important. Fred is living on and on, and of all things You Tube is preserving his legacy. I've just "discovered" the man himself.
@@edwardschmitt5710 the steam Roller 'Alison' has a new home and attends many steam fairs around the country. He named it after his wife as she wasn't a fan of steam engines or so I'm lead to believe ☺
@@HolyFreakinDragonSlayer the roller was renamed Betsy after his Mam. He ended up having three wife’s in total and his other engine he never named when he finished it just before the cancer took him away from us.
@@keycommander971 I'm aware of him having 3 wives. My father knew him personally. I used visit the roller a lot but unfortunately due to covid there have not been and steam rallies or vintage events

There will never be another Fred Dibnah. Something Fred often said, and thankfully it never came to pass: “One mistake up here and it's half a day out with the undertaker!” And: “A man who says he feels no fear is either a fool or a liar.” And finally: "Did yer like that!?" What a man, sadly died too soon. Like Daft Monkey said, Fred was more a Victorian; he would have been right at home in the Victorian era. Daft Monkey, I think you handled the tribute to Fred with kindness and with a lot of appreciation, clearly, like many, you admired the man tremendously. I only watched Fred on television like most people, to walk in his footprints like you have been able to do, well, what can I say, it must have been a great feeling. RIP Fred. Hope you are playing with your steam engines in heaven. Sadly, there are no chimneys to pull down, Fred.

What a man I new him and his sons jack and Roger I used to go to his house all the time as a kid help him get steam up in the yard went to a few shows with him I remember when he starting the mine shafted in his garden he was a mega dude one in a million
I recently discovered Fred’s series on the BBC Archive page on Facebook and loved it! I was very disappointed to hear the heritage centre in Bolton is no longer. It’s a place I would have loved to visit. Fred seemed like an extremely interesting character, a grafter and a really nice guy! What a legend. RIP Fred

Well you’ve got days of footage to watch ! I found out about him about 6 months ago and I’m still finding videos and footage and it’s really just incredible. He was an extremely hard worker and he could never find a balance between family and his love for steam snd architecture/ engineering . He was a great man and I believe he should get much more recognition than he does . People in this world need to find better role models and what better of a man than Mr. Fred Dibnah ! Rest in peace and may his legacy live on forever!

Me and me grandad used to sit and watch auld fred on a weekend for hours no matter how may times we watched the tapes we loved watching him, such a crying shame he's not here now old fred, I remember watching him and his lads and his mate on his traction engine.

This had me in tears. The whole lot should have been preserved. The outside workshop, the garden, mineshaft. All of it! I would pay all the money in the world to live in a house with such genuine character.

Freds kids wasn't really left with much choice, his last wife and her son were cut from the will and everything went to his kids but she had everything locked up contesting the will and everything got sold to pay for it, or something along those lines..

Hey you guys did a great job making this video! Adding recordings of Fred's voice makes it seem like Fred himself is giving the tour!! I am from across the pond in USA. But if I do visit UK, this place will be my #1 goal...if money gets tight and I can pick just one spot, this will be it. Reason being is that Fred is an English cultural icon, putting a face to the Industrial Revolution!! So quintessentially English. Also, just being by his house, hopefully some of his handy-man talents will rub off onto me as well!

Darn it, I just did some research online in preparation to visit there, but it looks like the place is now closed. Will probably visit Bolton anyway and will keep doing more online research. It's fantastic that you guys were able to make the video when the place was still open!!
MrWallyrooster well what can I say other than thank you so much!! And to think my little video has made it all the way over to the U.S is unbelievable. Fred was an amazing and inspirational character and when I was walking around his house I definitely felt like he was guiding me around thats why I played his voice over the top, I wanted the viewer to feel the same nostalgic feeling that I had felt. He had a real understanding of the old industrial world and unfortunately there’s not many people like that today. If you are planning on visiting, just 2 minutes from his house is was his mother’s. She lived on a terrace row of houses and all the chimneys on the row are the same until you get to hers. There’s about a 6ft chimney that stands out a country mile! Fred built it while his mother was away and when she came back she couldn’t believe there was a huge chimney on top of her house that Fred had built! It’s safe to say that she wasn’t too please with him Haha! The house was closed to the public when i filmed the video but I just contacted the owner and asked if he would let me and too my surprise he said yes, so if you emailed him he may let you? Thanks once again for talking the time out to watch the video! It really does mean a lot, cheers 👍🏼

Very respectfully done mate. I had no idea the big engine's and all the machines had gone, but hopefully they live on somewhere. I can't help feeling that English heritage dropped the ball here though, because whilst I didn't know Fred, we ALL knew what HE stood for, and this property should have been a temple to the working-man in the 21st century, teaching future generations a little bit of history and of course the ongoing importance of hand-skills, and the pleasure that can be gained by freeing a bolt that was last tightened 100 years ago, or setting your first hot-rivet, planishing a sheet of steel, bending a bar over your knee... only then will appreciate that a sandwich eaten in haste with filthy-nails won from honest toil will be the tastiest sandwich you had ever eaten, and perhaps the first one you had earned! BRAVO (By the way, I started to hear Elgar as I was typing then... that is why I stopped). 😂

Couldn't agree more. Just been watching the very first documentary which shows Fred working in one shed which was just a roof on 4 pillars and completely open to the elements. Its amazing how he developed the site into a full workshop driven by steam. So sad to see most of it gone now.
@@chris67bug Indeed Chris. Now I am CERTAINLY not comparing myself to Fred, but I remember building a car in similar squalid conditions. I was SO focused I didn't even mind doing 8 hours work then driving to the cowshed and lying on my back soaking wet (because now the sleet on the cobbles had melted). It took me 86 weeks to finish, and one year later I drove '86' (KSK 362 across the Sahara as part of the Liege Agadir desert Rally), and whenever I face another self-inflicted mammoth task, I always think of this to remind myself that even when all around you are telling you.. "You can't"... guess what I can! We all can if we focus and make the sacrifice, its not about money... my car was made out of scrap with a body made from recycled aluminium from Chip-Shop pie cabinets! Proper British Spirit... Fred would have understood that 100%. I instantly warmed to Fred because he was a can-do guy like my Grandfather who once amazed me by making Piston-Rings from an old clock-spring. It isn't too late to put the GREAT back into Britain... Vote here: 😂
Leon sold things off through ebay, it will never be complete again and i would loved to have that house and workshop to live how i want with my land rovers to repair them and help out others.
Hello again, Nigel, was it you who commented that you used to park outside a house that belonged to STANLEY UNWIN -and you would have knocked on the door to meet him, if you knew it was his house? How about knocking on the door, and meeting FRED DIBNAH! I was going to say, you thing English Heritage "dropped the ball" by not listing this house, and preventing people pilfering from his shed, etc. But you know WHY they didn't list FRED DIBNAH'S house? Because he WASN'T POSH! If the house had belonged to someone stylish, and wealthy, like Frank Sinatra, it would have been another matter! But someone who represented industrial heritage was not whst English Heritage was looking for!
Didn't see much TV back when Fred was on, but thanks to ytube I've seen most or all of Fred's TV shows, one of a kind was he, and a man I'd buy a few pints to listen to his stories, priceless!!

Aw Mate, I am a huge fan of Fred Dibnah so this was a joy to watch and what a super talented Artist he was, who knew? Mind you I bet Fred could turn his hand to anything. What I wouldn’t give for that folder of his sketches and ideas, it reminds me of Da Vinci’s or Michelangelo’s sketches that I also love to see obvs Fred wasn’t quite to their mark but he was an exceptional person. An absolute treat that was Mr. M. Fred told a story of walking into a pub and someone shouted “Ay up Fred what’s the flash point of your Cap?” Still makes me PMSL now, I imagine a lot of people these days won’t even get the joke. May thanks for that. Either where the pond is now, or just to the left is where he build the steam engine "Alison", named after his then wife. It would have been 1968-70 when I was a child, of 8 to 10 years old, that I used to go and help him in his yard. I will always remember a shell from a big gun, about 2 feet high and 4-6 inches thick which was in one of the sheds. Long hot school holidays and happy days..

Loved to watch Fred whenever he was on the telly. He reminded me a lot of the older generation of working class men I knew growing up. Workshops or sheds filled with tools and salvaged stuff, saved just in case it could be useful at some point. If something needed doing around the house, such as fitting a kitchen cabinet or building/knocking down a wall etc they would do it themselves rather than call someone in to do the job. Extremely knowledgeable folk, who could turn their hand to most things, and if they couldn’t they knew a mate who did and who would do it as a favour in return for a couple of pints or some wood from the shed that they needed for a project of their own. The respect you have for Fred and his legacy is evident in this video. Cracking job👍

It's an absolute disgrace Fred's grave is in the state it is. His grave should be managed by the state as he was an MBE and an honourable man of Bolton. I have always been a great fan of Fred for over 45 years and continue to be a fan. I really hope some day someone will reach out to the right authorities to look into the management of Fred's grave and making it what it needs to be and for all the right reasons. Fred did so much for this country and for the eduction needs for this country and I think could do this for him to honor a great great man.
Me and my best mate my Grandad usto watch Fred then on a weekend we would do some work the house and maintain his land this was special to me I wish my Grandad was still around to watch it with me how times change. I also randomly just came across a 2 pound coin with a steam engine the industrial revolution one I will keep it as a sign from Fred cheers me old pal.

Was good to hear Mr Palmer understanding the importance of it being in the museum. I've managed to find a few pics online of his headgear up in the grounds of the museum. Good to see it up.

I’m not in awe I’m in shock to see how much machinery is missing from the workshop area’s. Steam boiler gone steam engine missing that ran the workshop machinery even the pit head is gone as it was finished and working just before he became ill it was his last major mission he completed. I just can’t believe how much stuff is missing and we was to believe it was going to be a museum but it looks like it’s been robbed out side.
Fred was and alway will be my engineering hero he’s the worlds greatest lost to history and modern times as they merged. Good video well handled just hart breaking for some of us to see a man lifetime pulled apart it’s something no one gets to see once you past on the pearly gates of heaven
Yes it is a pity. Just as the chimneys were all torn down, but don't forget weather and expense of keeping things up, they all take their toll. I'm sure the steamroller has a new owner that appreciates it. Preservation is important. Fred is living on and on, and of all things You Tube is preserving his legacy. I've just "discovered" the man himself.
@@edwardschmitt5710 the steam Roller 'Alison' has a new home and attends many steam fairs around the country. He named it after his wife as she wasn't a fan of steam engines or so I'm lead to believe ☺
@@HolyFreakinDragonSlayer the roller was renamed Betsy after his Mam. He ended up having three wife’s in total and his other engine he never named when he finished it just before the cancer took him away from us.
@@keycommander971 I'm aware of him having 3 wives. My father knew him personally. I used visit the roller a lot but unfortunately due to covid there have not been and steam rallies or vintage events

There will never be another Fred Dibnah. Something Fred often said, and thankfully it never came to pass: “One mistake up here and it's half a day out with the undertaker!” And: “A man who says he feels no fear is either a fool or a liar.” And finally: "Did yer like that!?" What a man, sadly died too soon. Like Daft Monkey said, Fred was more a Victorian; he would have been right at home in the Victorian era.
Daft Monkey, I think you handled the tribute to Fred with kindness and with a lot of appreciation, clearly, like many, you admired the man tremendously. I only watched Fred on television like most people, to walk in his footprints like you have been able to do, well, what can I say, it must have been a great feeling.
RIP Fred. Hope you are playing with your steam engines in heaven. Sadly, there are no chimneys to pull down, Fred.

What a man I new him and his sons jack and Roger I used to go to his house all the time as a kid help him get steam up in the yard went to a few shows with him I remember when he starting the mine shafted in his garden he was a mega dude one in a million

I recently discovered Fred’s series on the BBC Archive page on Facebook and loved it! I was very disappointed to hear the heritage centre in Bolton is no longer. It’s a place I would have loved to visit. Fred seemed like an extremely interesting character, a grafter and a really nice guy! What a legend. RIP Fred

Well you’ve got days of footage to watch ! I found out about him about 6 months ago and I’m still finding videos and footage and it’s really just incredible. He was an extremely hard worker and he could never find a balance between family and his love for steam snd architecture/ engineering . He was a great man and I believe he should get much more recognition than he does . People in this world need to find better role models and what better of a man than Mr. Fred Dibnah ! Rest in peace and may his legacy live on forever!

I am from across the pond in USA. But if I do visit UK, this place will be my #1 goal...if money gets tight and I can pick just one spot, this will be it. Reason being is that Fred is an English cultural icon, putting a face to the Industrial Revolution!! So quintessentially English.
Also, just being by his house, hopefully some of his handy-man talents will rub off onto me as well!

Darn it, I just did some research online in preparation to visit there, but it looks like the place is now closed. Will probably visit Bolton anyway and will keep doing more online research. It's fantastic that you guys were able to make the video when the place was still open!!
MrWallyrooster well what can I say other than thank you so much!! And to think my little video has made it all the way over to the U.S is unbelievable. Fred was an amazing and inspirational character and when I was walking around his house I definitely felt like he was guiding me around thats why I played his voice over the top, I wanted the viewer to feel the same nostalgic feeling that I had felt. He had a real understanding of the old industrial world and unfortunately there’s not many people like that today.
If you are planning on visiting, just 2 minutes from his house is was his mother’s. She lived on a terrace row of houses and all the chimneys on the row are the same until you get to hers. There’s about a 6ft chimney that stands out a country mile! Fred built it while his mother was away and when she came back she couldn’t believe there was a huge chimney on top of her house that Fred had built! It’s safe to say that she wasn’t too please with him Haha! The house was closed to the public when i filmed the video but I just contacted the owner and asked if he would let me and too my surprise he said yes, so if you emailed him he may let you?

Very respectfully done mate. I had no idea the big engine's and all the machines had gone, but hopefully they live on somewhere. I can't help feeling that English heritage dropped the ball here though, because whilst I didn't know Fred, we ALL knew what HE stood for, and this property should have been a temple to the working-man in the 21st century, teaching future generations a little bit of history and of course the ongoing importance of hand-skills, and the pleasure that can be gained by freeing a bolt that was last tightened 100 years ago, or setting your first hot-rivet, planishing a sheet of steel, bending a bar over your knee... only then will appreciate that a sandwich eaten in haste with filthy-nails won from honest toil will be the tastiest sandwich you had ever eaten, and perhaps the first one you had earned! BRAVO (By the way, I started to hear Elgar as I was typing then... that is why I stopped). 😂

Couldn't agree more. Just been watching the very first documentary which shows Fred working in one shed which was just a roof on 4 pillars and completely open to the elements. Its amazing how he developed the site into a full workshop driven by steam. So sad to see most of it gone now.
@@chris67bug Indeed Chris. Now I am CERTAINLY not comparing myself to Fred, but I remember building a car in similar squalid conditions. I was SO focused I didn't even mind doing 8 hours work then driving to the cowshed and lying on my back soaking wet (because now the sleet on the cobbles had melted). It took me 86 weeks to finish, and one year later I drove '86' (KSK 362 across the Sahara as part of the Liege Agadir desert Rally), and whenever I face another self-inflicted mammoth task, I always think of this to remind myself that even when all around you are telling you.. "You can't"... guess what I can! We all can if we focus and make the sacrifice, its not about money... my car was made out of scrap with a body made from recycled aluminium from Chip-Shop pie cabinets! Proper British Spirit... Fred would have understood that 100%. I instantly warmed to Fred because he was a can-do guy like my Grandfather who once amazed me by making Piston-Rings from an old clock-spring. It isn't too late to put the GREAT back into Britain... Vote here: 😂
Leon sold things off through ebay, it will never be complete again and i would loved to have that house and workshop to live how i want with my land rovers to repair them and help out others.
Hello again, Nigel, was it you who commented that you used to park outside a house that belonged to STANLEY UNWIN -and you would have knocked on the door to meet him, if you knew it was his house? How about knocking on the door, and meeting FRED DIBNAH! I was going to say, you thing English Heritage "dropped the ball" by not listing this house, and preventing people pilfering from his shed, etc. But you know WHY they didn't list FRED DIBNAH'S house? Because he WASN'T POSH! If the house had belonged to someone stylish, and wealthy, like Frank Sinatra, it would have been another matter! But someone who represented industrial heritage was not whst English Heritage was looking for!

Aw Mate, I am a huge fan of Fred Dibnah so this was a joy to watch and what a super talented Artist he was, who knew? Mind you I bet Fred could turn his hand to anything. What I wouldn’t give for that folder of his sketches and ideas, it reminds me of Da Vinci’s or Michelangelo’s sketches that I also love to see obvs Fred wasn’t quite to their mark but he was an exceptional person. An absolute treat that was Mr. M.
Fred told a story of walking into a pub and someone shouted “Ay up Fred what’s the flash point of your Cap?” Still makes me PMSL now, I imagine a lot of people these days won’t even get the joke. Cheers again awesome 👏

Great video. It captured the atmosphere of the Fred's home brilliantly. Also you are spot on in saying he was the David Attenborough of the industrial revolution and British engineering. A true one off thanks for making and narrating this film.

We all grew up as kids watching fred on tv and locals that seen him most days locally.
Were all in ore and fascinated By fred because like you say his character and totally genius at everything he did with his skills . TV presenter was also very good at captioning audiences all over.

May thanks for that. Either where the pond is now, or just to the left is where he build the steam engine "Alison", named after his then wife. It would have been 1968-70 when I was a child, of 8 to 10 years old, that I used to go and help him in his yard. I will always remember a shell from a big gun, about 2 feet high and 4-6 inches thick which was in one of the sheds. Long hot school holidays and happy days..

Loved to watch Fred whenever he was on the telly. He reminded me a lot of the older generation of working class men I knew growing up. Workshops or sheds filled with tools and salvaged stuff, saved just in case it could be useful at some point. If something needed doing around the house, such as fitting a kitchen cabinet or building/knocking down a wall etc they would do it themselves rather than call someone in to do the job. Extremely knowledgeable folk, who could turn their hand to most things, and if they couldn’t they knew a mate who did and who would do it as a favour in return for a couple of pints or some wood from the shed that they needed for a project of their own.
The respect you have for Fred and his legacy is evident in this video. Cracking job👍

It's an absolute disgrace Fred's grave is in the state it is. His grave should be managed by the state as he was an MBE and an honourable man of Bolton. I have always been a great fan of Fred for over 45 years and continue to be a fan. I really hope some day someone will reach out to the right authorities to look into the management of Fred's grave and making it what it needs to be and for all the right reasons. Fred did so much for this country and for the eduction needs for this country and I think could do this for him to honor a great great man.
Where is his grave? I am 3 hours from Bolton but would do it once a year.

Me and my best mate my Grandad usto watch Fred then on a weekend we would do some work the house and maintain his land this was special to me I wish my Grandad was still around to watch it with me how times change. I also randomly just came across a 2 pound coin with a steam engine the industrial revolution one I will keep it as a sign from Fred cheers me old pal.

Thanks for making this video of Fred Dibnah’s old home and workshop. I used to love watching his work and admired the way he wanted to support the old methods of maintaining the steam engines of the past. He was a one off character.
