  • Perfect for those July 4th BBQs, or any other get-together where you want to fire up that grill, and light your charcoal the natural, healthy way, without lighter fluid. Sure, you can buy a Weber Chimney Starter, but if you have an old paint or coffee can, or any other type of metal container laying around you can make your own for cheap! This Do-It-Yourself project is easy, simple, and a great way to save money on lighting your charcoal. Watch this instructional how-to video to build your very own.
To use: Simply stuff the bottom full of paper, put the charcoal in the top, light the paper and after about 20 minutes you will have nice, naturally lit, glowing coals to start roasting your delicious BBQ favorites.

I made the same this weekend with a few mods...I didn't use the bottom of the can, I let the charcoal rest on the wire. I also only cut back half of the top of the can and pushed the loose flap into the tin and back underneath, this made everything much more sturdy. Thanks for the idea!

At 4:08 it looked as if Mr Bean was testing that by shaking!

Awesome production, but , drill al your holed first, then break down the can. How did it work, how long before the charcoal was ready? Inquiring minds want to know? other than that, not bad.

Thanks for the comment. You're right, in hindsight it would have been much easier to drill the holes first. As far as how it works, it's great, have used it many times. The handle gets a bit too hot, so I have to wear gloves to pick it up, but otherwise no complaints. Charcoal is ready after about 10-15 minutes. The key is using enough paper underneath it to adequately light the first few chunks of charcoal. Also I've found it works best to set it on top of the grill and light it there. If you try to light it straight off the ground or concrete it just doesn't quite get enough air flow.

A thicker can would be better, but it has held up decently. Maybe an old gallon paint can would have been better.

@@justinhoot2489 To make it more clear. The hammering in the background is the reason. Two sounds overlaping - no go. I still watched your video, but muted ;).
