I've been watching and reading a lot about blacksmithing only for about a month now but this is the best video bay far that I've seen yet. Solid instruction and presentation. Solid beard.
This family is amazing . I have watched these videos and visited the web site and what Owen makes is amazing . Such a talented family. What with John, Kate, Raven , Paddy and Gavin , all seem to excel in what they do . Many thanks
Probably the best forging class I've seen on the internet. Simple, direct, complete and well explained. I wish I had something like this a few years back, when I started. Well done. I hope you make more of these...
Excellent tips. Excellent teaching. Excellent angles of recording. Excellent video! I always love thorough vids like this. I've been forging on and off for maybe over 6 years now (although I've never been to a class or seen another smith forging in person) and have seen, since then, probably every good bladesmithing vid on RUclips. This this is the first time I've actually heard someone verbally describe the proper way to judge the distance/angle in relation to the hammer+blade+anvil while forging the bevels, in order to keep the edge centered and bevels at an even height. I've always just kinda randomly guessed, but this will help me know what to actually look for instead just going at it. I'm kinda slapping my forehead now after hearing it, though.... I mean, 50% of the hammer angle.. c'mon! 😐 lol. I do hope you have many more vids to come in the future as I've been a fan of your work for some years. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Thanks for the comments. the precise bevel forging was shown to me by Don Fogg.who was (is) resposible for a lot of great desimination of bladesmithing info and gathering people together at his bladesmiths forum.
you explain what exactly your doing and why you're doing it. most blacksmithing channels skim over those details. keep up the good work and im sure the subscribers will follow :)
Nice work mate, nice tools, nice beard too. Got here bye Alec greetings from the Holland. I didn't skip a minute. Thanks for the knowledge, i'd take a workshop every day from you Owen.
Hi Owen, I made this knife on one of your courses a while ago. Fantastic day, highly recommended. I'm planning to have a go myself at home. Could you remind me of the dimensions of the EN9 steel that you started with? Thanks again for your help.
Very nice smithing and teaching! Thank you for it. What was the full length of the handle section after drawing it down and tapering, but before scrolling and folding it? It started at 7 cm and looks like about 25 cm (10") at the end. Is that about right?
Mr. Bush, I note that the hammer you use seems to be much different from hammers I have seen other smiths use in their videos. I think they call theirs "rounders" is there a benefit from using one over the other?
Hi Owen, thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial, I've watched several times and really feel I've learned a lot. Could you tell me what size stock you started with? Thanks again, Matt.
You can reduce slag production by reducing oxygen levels in the forge, BTW forging steel at those super high temps too much can wick away it's carbon content and eventually become unusable, that is why most smiths forge in bright red to orange heats instead of pure orange all of the time.
Great tutorial! I like the technique and explaining of all start to finish. Thanks for sharing.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much for your time and effort on this.

Can biogas be used for the gas forge?

Another video? Where's that then..
It’s really cool but I want to see one with a bigger blade
This was my first knife I forged I'm now building my own place to forge
Lucky my dad likes forging because I'm 12😂
Drawing out the shape of the knife with a cross peen would be a bit more efficient, to avoid your "two steps forward and one step back" issue.
