Big light, but it's PISH! (With schematic)

  • An AA (Automobile Association) light that was sent by Robert for our exploration.
The circuitry is minimalist and interesting, the LED mounting and reflector are good, but the battery itself is a bit lacklustre, and the intensity rapidly declines with battery voltage. The choice of a lead-acid battery is odd. If I was being cynical I might ponder whether this was China's way of getting rid of its "toxic" metals.
Still lots of scope for hacking and customisation though.
This is also the video where I realised that the word "PISH" is very "Glasgow". To quote:-
"Pish. Translation: Urine. However, in Glasgow and other parts of Scotland, it's a common word for something that evokes a negative vibe."
This light is "Complete and utter PISH!"
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

That empty-ish case reminded me of a comic I saw in the 1970s, in _Popular Electronics_ magazine, I think.
This guy is looking at a label on the back of a large speaker 🔊 enclosure which said, _"To avoid the danger of shock, do not open!"_
So what did this guy do? Got out a screwdriver and removed the back panel. Inside were two things: a *TINY* speaker and another sticker which read _"We told you you'd be shocked!"_

I remember these "formfactor" lamps from 20 years ago, basically a halogen car headlight bulb with a parabolic reflector and a LA-Battery in a (somewhat) handy format. Lots of Light output compared to other torches at the time, but not the best battery life. Might be fun to hack this thing with a big Lithium-Battery and a ton of LEDs in the front to turn it into the same "portable searchlight" but with much better performance / battery life.

    • @albanana683
      @albanana683 2 года назад +11

Yes, somewhere I still have one of those halogen based lights. Just like a car headlight, but only for a few minutes. And deep cycling the lead acid battery seriously decreased its life span. Maybe worth digging it out and doing a LED + Li-Ion hack.

    • @jezp1976
      @jezp1976 2 года назад +10

It looks very much like the form factor was designed for a filament lamp and updated to use a LED. The reflector would do very little if the light source sends all of its light forwards.

But there is a small problem with this. 4056 is designed to charge a single cell, because it's sensing full charge by measuring current at full voltage, if used on multiple cells or leaky cell, it will be overcharging, you can solve this by putting a resistor in between the charger and battery, but i only did that while i was supervising the thing, i wouldn't rely on that bodge to charge it while i take a sleep.

Maybe add a swappable fresnel lens when you want more flood and less spot, and swap out the batteries for something else; heck, you could replace the SLA with NiMH and your super-dumb charging circuit, and have an always-topped-up emergency flashlight. And as a bonus, no flashing SOS mode!

Just remember 12v pb acid batteries are STILL powering the electronics/computers of pretty much all motor vehicles on the road today, and they are 100% reliant on them to start.... Even ELECTRIC cars still have a 12v pb acid battery to run the computer and 'start up' the main battery. Tesla this year actually did away with the 12v pb acid battery on new models in favour of 12v li-ion, probably the first manufacturer since the war to do so - and not without complaint, critics argued that running the starter battery stone dead accidently (leaving lights on the most common reason, continuously cranking a car with no feul or the immobilizer triggered until it dies the next most common) is extremely common, and while it does little damage to a lead battery which you can easily bring back to life with a jump starter or a garage charger, 12v lithium is a different matter. I have even seen forums where people are describing how to replace the lithium battery in thier Tesla with pb, and how to phool the computer into thinking the lithium battery is still there.....

Talk about "room for improvement" inside that absolutely cavernous container! WOW! You could absolutely load the insides up with battery of whatever flavor you want. Heck, just using as a container with the input/output terminals on a disk of plastic on the front where the LED used to be. Nice that they put the LED on a little connector like that, but solder the battery to the board/terminals. Maybe gut it of all photo-emitting powers, and then load it up with LFP batteries, and have it as a gigantic portable power bank, with built in extra FANCY carry handle. And moderately water-resistant if you would put a smear of silicone in the gap.
I know I have said this before, but people always ask me what possible use those tiny lead batteries would have: Emergency/fire lighting fixtures still use them, due to the stupid simple circuitry needed to keep them trickle charged all the time, and to detect when the power goes out. I would bet you cash money that these same PB/SLA batteries are in the tiny "Exit/Egress" signs, but the market is being slowly replaced with the LFP versions, and/or super cap, so they have to sell them somehow.

It's funny that a tiny pocket thrower like an Noctigon KR1 will have better light, longer throw, better battery life and the convenience of replacable battery (1x18650) and stepless adjustable brightness in the size of just the handle of this light.

More battery (salvaged 18650's from laptop packs). proper BMS and higher power LED and you have something.

Chunky and simple stupid, but nice in that there is sooo much room for modding. Could make a retina scorcher or a run-forever light with this enclosure. (Doing your own build inside that might be fun for a future video.)

I get those exact LED's with and without the PCB....The 1W/3.2-3.4V/350Ma...3W/3.2-3.4V/700Ma...5W/6-7V/700Ma and also a Fenix flashlight replacement LED [PCB only] 10W/2.9-4.0V that puts out a little over 12W connected to a fully charged Lithium Ion battery. [4.2V]
You could easily put in a 3W, thermal glue a copper plate on the back with of course adding thermal paste under the LED PCB and a few 18650's in parallel for a quick easy upgrade. Or ad a larger copper plate and use a 10W LED chip for a "Tim the Toolman" upgrade.

I hope this light was absolutely dirt cheap. Some genuinely excellent 18650 flashlights can be had for not much money. A Convoy C8 is under $25 USD, and some of the base model convoy S2+ flashlights are around $15.

Curiously (automotive/leisure) Lead-Acids were going for £480/tonne when i weighed a few in recently.... which meant it was worth the drive to get £20 back for four 'doorstops'.
The current measuring faux-pas with the UT210E (which i've done myself) can be avoided if you get a UT210D! - AC/DC are selected on the rotary switch. (Nought to 200A). Only downside is you lose the millamp resolution, getting 10mA instead.

I had a torch like that years ago I bought from Argos. It was branded under the Challenge name. It was the same as that one except the battery was a 6v lead acid and it was the charger doing the 'intelligence'. The charger was labelled 'for sealed lead acid batteries only' and had a red and green LED on it for charging/charged and power. The battery failed in a short while. I think I still have the gubbins from inside but I threw the case away as it had that horrible rubber coating that went sticky. The other light I bought was much bigger with a halogen bulb in it, bigger charger, still branded Challenge and had a 12v sealed lead acid battery in it. I still have it but the battery is long dead. Another LED torch I bought from Argos has 8 LEDs behind lenses, 7 round the edge and 1 in the middle, again years old, battery dead though this time a flat NiCd or NiMh pack, I cant remember. It is supposed to be weather proof so I was going to replace the LEDs with slow fade RGB ones and make it into a solar garden light lol, still never got round to it. Thats typical me.

Hah, looks like everybody had this one. Ive got mine, in original box. It came from Harbor Freight.
Called the Night-Search Eye 2925....1,000,000 candle power Innovative High-Quality Rechargable Halogen Lantern with Super Bright LED Light Tube
Has the I II toggle. The side led was pretty pathetic
Its been sitting on my project shelf for over a year. I have the parts. The main beam will be one of those Ultra Fire drop in modules. Seriously good beam for ~ $10. They rate them @ 1000 lumens
Side LED to be replaced by 1 or 2 of the many cob panels i have laying about
And Two 26650 cell holder in parallel, to be able to use 1 or 2 cells
Thought It would make a nice camping light, once I get around to it

🤔🤔🤔Hmmm.... Time for a 'tune up' methinks...
Higher rated SMD (with a bigger lens cap on top utilising the reflector more to make the beam wider), replace charging circuit so that a higher capacity LIfpo/NiMetal/newer battery tech and increase water resistancy'... Might make for a decent torch then... 🤔😏😎🇬🇧

Chuckle. You could put a boatload of 18650's in there, a buck converter for managing voltage, and a BMS circuit ... and with that mounting setup a better LED ... all without bodging the case much. FTM you could put a much higher wattage LED in and a cooling fan if you wanted.. What's the point of such a waste of space? I have many torches much smaller that put out much more light (and probably just as cheap).

On the topic of portable lights. Recently daughter ended my "not-sh*t-still-cheap" torchlight. Decided to at last buy decent one. All that have standart batteries was low output, or got piss-poor working time. So opted for one with 18500 and charging, the led was something XP-G3 I think. Man, for its size it got some light. Like a day and night what I was using before. Now going near torchlight stand at average store, they all look like childs toys compared.

Clive this is the base model. The other models have a plethora of battery and LED choices for the retailer to choose from.
Thx for sharing the teardown. It doesn't get any more basic than that. I wonder if the PCB pick and place machine was organic. I'm surprised they even used a PCB. Could've been everything flying in space. Maybe heat shrink tubing cost more than a PCB. Who knows when you're making a bazillion units.
    Again, thx for sharing.

Here in the states, we have a discount store called "Ollies". It was about 15 years ago I was in there and they had these Steelton Tools branded, "1 million" candlepower searchlights for like 30 dollars. If that light was 10 million CP, then my butt is too! If I'm being generous, I'd give it about 750 thousand CP. . It was a slight bit dimmer than my Brinkmann Q-beam 1-M. (A Legitimate 1 Million CP spotlight) Physically the thing was huge. The lens and reflector was about 10 inches to a foot across. It was heavy too as the body of it was indeed stuffed with as big of a 12V SLA battery that could fit in it. It had two switches up on the grip one for On/Off, the other for "High/Low" The battery was decent, but the 55 watt H3 automotive foglamp bulb burned through it within 20 minutes or so. I took it to work one day and someone borrowed it. I got it back with the glass lens smashed out of it. I had to go to a local glass cutter and have him cut a new bit of glass for it. 10 dollars there..
I eventually made some improvements to it. I happened to have some of those little blue LED stick-on mini spot lights, that could be used for accent lighting in a car/truck (Like lighting up a console or place on the dash etc) They ran on 12V obviously. I took two of them and wired them in to this searchlight, on their own little switch. Those were stuck on either side of the reflector, just behind the glass, and pointed straight ahead. I also added a 12 power socket mounted to a bracket on the side. Now, it was not only JUST a searchlight, but a relatively useful powerbank. It could charge a phone easily. My girlfriend (at the time) and I liked to go on walks after dark, down the bike trail near our home. But she would get spooked by the deer and raccoons rustling in the bushes. So the light came in handy for that as well. Just walking along I had the two blue leds lit to provide just enough light to see about 20 feet ahead of us, But if needed, I could flip the switch for the main lamp and light up everything for about a 1/4 mile ahead. But just using the 2 leds, it would go for a few days or more. (I tested that)
But one day I dropped the damn thing.. The brittle plastic case shattered like glass, the glass lens shattered, again.. and the SLA battery burst, leaking its fluids all over the floor. I salvaged what could be salvaged and tossed the rest. Those bits are still sitting around here, in a box, somewhere amongst the cobwebs.
The one I had was similar to this one on Amazon... (link)

I've got a very similar unit, but made with an extruded aluminum body. The problem is that leaving the charger on cooks the SLA battery eventually. In my case, it took about 6 months. So much for standby use. The awful part is that a replacement SLA battery costs more than the unit cost originally. I stuck 3x NiMH cells as a replacement, but that's a bodge. FWIW, the innards were stuffed with plastic packing bubble filler because of the smaller battery size.

Now if you could bung in something like a 10W LED cluster, that's small enough to work with that reflector, then you'd have something to work with. Battery power's not the issue here. It's lack of LED grunt.

It would be funny if you found a standard 5mm white led in there as the 'bulb'. I had a torch which had 9 of them in parallel across 3 AAA cells. It drew about 0.4A which was way more than the 9x20mA maximum rating for the LEDs. The LEDs died one by one and the torch got bluer and bluer as the current to the remaining LEDs got larger and larger. I didn't get, for a few pennies, why they couldn't add a resistor to limit the current. I was equally surprised to find no resistor charging that battery as all SLA batteries have a maximum permissible current and I can't see that battery being big enough to handle 1A or even 2A from a usb charger. It looks like maximum 1Ah which would have only been 1 or 2 hours light.
