Island hopping is slow. The US was constantly involved in the Pacific, but the early battles were arduous and long. Guadalcanal tied up much of the fleet, with control of the island in doubt for many months. The airfields had to be secured in order to establish dominance at sea, and eventually push on to subsequent campaigns.
The war plan was Rainbow. The 5 was version 5 of the rainbow plan. As an example rainbow 1 was a purely defensive plan that had the USA defending its shores and not moving towards offensive operations until the political situation changed.
Before we move on from the USA iam going to do a follow up video tonight for rainbow 5. Go into some greater detail that I feel I did not cover with some depth or just ignored it.
