Have you ever made a character inspired by a monster? Do you have any ideas for characters you would like to play based of these ideas?

One day when I was 7, I was in a store, and I saw the D&D Monster Manuel. I opened it up, looked at the monsters and knew I wanted to play.
(Edit) Thank you so much for all the likes, and thank you D&D beyond team for all your work on making it easer to play during these hard times!!

I really want to play an Echo Knight re-flavored as an Ooze/Slime Knight with a Simic Hybrid re-flavored as a cursed Ooze/Slime person. Probably after a ritual/sacrifice went wrong.

My 5 year old son has decided that the Monster Manual is in fact "his book" and not mine ... he LOVES it. Fortunately I have been allowed to keep all other hardcover sourcebooks for myself ... and I insist that he keeps "his book" on the shelf, in the study, with all of "mine".

Another thought... A spell caster acquiring the Polymorph spell will definitely want to take a gander at the Monster Manual.

What a great discussion! For me, I will look up Dragons in the Monster Manual when creating a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer (I have played two so far, Gold and Blue). This gives me ideas for my backstory and possibly some ideas for traits, ideals or bonds my character will have that are representative of that bloodline.

OMG I had all those old loose-leaf Monster Manual guides and I'd just flick through them coming up with stories to get them into the game. It was great inspiration for what you wanted to do next.

My first exposure to DND was buying the prepainted figures with my mom when I was very young, me and my friends would fight each other with the figures while we made up rules as we went. We didn't really know what DND was but we called this game DND. And yes the first book I got was a monster manual, in particular 4e monster manual 3.

Like being a warlock with a dragon patron that's also pretending to be your pseudodragon familiar.

    1. Looking at the monsters just rules.
    2. You can always, always, always reskin something if you’re worried your players know too much about it.
    3. If your players can’t read about a monster w/out metagaming, you need to talk to them.

yeah! we all love to slay monsters and join in fantastic combat, but why is D&D allllll about killing your enemies? There are so little options for non-lethal combat in scenarios where you don't want to kill those town guardsmen who are trying to arrest you, or similar events.

A large percentage of players are prone to meta gaming. In a lot of cases it’s accidental. It’s really hard for a player who knows all about trolls (for example) to role play the experience of their character being introduced to troll regeneration for the first time. I’ve been at the table where people just state the HP or AC of a monster. Some people can play without meta gaming just fine. I think a lot of players can’t and those can ruin things at the table for people who do not know the info. Why invite that possibility? I wouldn’t encourage players to look at the monster manual for this reason.
You want inspiration? Watch a movie or a tv show or anime or read a book.
I don’t see much of a difference between looking at the monster manual and looking at the adventurer module while playing through that campaign. Some people can do that just fine. Most people cannot.
